Hand to hand.

Rules Questions

How is unarmed hand to hand combat ruled? Do they count as natural attacks (having 2 as a human), or do you use the two weapon fighting rules? ...or... can you only make one attack?

I'm trying an unarmed combatant and want to be certain I have it down right.

You use your unarmed strike attack which is NOT, I repeat NOT the same as a natural attack. You can two-weapon figjt, using the modifier for light weapons.

What he/she said. And if you're making an UNCHAINED monk, then I'm pretty sure you CAN stack two weapon fighting with flurry of blows, because it says in the rules for flurry that it stacks with any ability that increases how many attacks you can make a round, such as haste, or two weapon fighting.

*note that this does not work for the regular monk, as flurry quote: 'functions like two-weapon fighting'. Which means it would not stack with the two weapon fighting feat.

Flurry of Blows is basically free Two Weapon Fighting if you have it.

You will note that Flurry of Blows (for core monk and unchained monk) says that it is its own kind of full attack action (which is a kind of full round action) and therefore cannot be combined with TWF which happens when you use the normal full-attack action.

If you are not a monk (or other class with archetype that gets flurry of blows) you can pick up TWF feats and TWF with unarmed strikes just like you would with two other light weapons. This is because unarmed strikes count as manufactured light weapons, except they can be enhanced by things that normally enhance natural attacks as well.

And also please note you don't automatically have to TWF with unarmed strikes. But you do need Two Weapon Fighting feat to reduce the penalties for TWF, it's a -2 to each attack with the feat or a -4 main hand and -8 off hand to each attack without the feat (while using light weapons). Improved and Greater Two Weapon Fighting are what actually grant additional attacks with the off-hand, the first off-hand attack doesn't require the feat but is a terrible idea without it.

Explains it perfectly for me. Thank you all very much.

That isn't accurate. Flurry (unchained or regular) can't be combined with TWF.

Regular flurry because it's already acting like TWF.

Whereas unchained flurry has the wording:

Quote:
At 1st level, a monk can make a flurry of blows as a full-attack action. When making a flurry of blows, the monk can make one additional attack at his highest base attack bonus. This additional attack stacks with the bonus attacks from haste and other similar effects. When using this ability, the monk can make these attacks with any combination of his unarmed strikes and weapons that have the monk special weapon quality. He takes no penalty for using multiple weapons when making a flurry of blows, but he does not gain any additional attacks beyond what's already granted by the flurry for doing so. (He can still gain additional attacks from a high base attack bonus, from this ability, and from haste and similar effects).

Flurry doesn't grant extra attacks from TWF, and TWF doesn't count for "similar effects" to haste other effects that grant extra attacks.
