PFS Core Dragon Disciple

Advice

Silver Crusade

Hi All,
I am seeking the advice of the distinguished members of the forum on creating a PFS CORE character that would PRC into the dragon disciple. I have read a few guide online and really like the idea of the character that blasts when they can and if someone gets in close they rip them to shreds. I am torn between either a green or a gold dragon and am also torn between multi-classing pally sorcerer.

Please any advise from the members of this forum would be a great help.

Half elf. Take Paladin first for the HP and then wreck faces, have great saves and strength.
Paladin 2, Sorcerer Gold dragon 3 DD.
Take a Falchion and pile on the heat

Silver Crusade

Thank you for the advice

Agreed. Paladin 2/Sorcerer X/Dragon Disciple is widely considered the strongest entry. You can do some work with Bloodrager getting you higher base strength, and therefore damage, but the Charisma to saves ALONE makes Paladin the stronger 2 level dip, and you want sorcerer levels for the spellcasting.

Sovereign Court

1 person marked this as a favorite.

@Davor: Sadly Bloodrager won't work for Core :p

There are a few different routes you can go depending on what you want to do.

Barbarian 1/Bard 4
- Rage and Dragon Disciple stack nicely, you'll be able to access some extra skills via Versatile Performance, Bardic Performance will buff you and the party, and finally you'll have spells like Blur and Mirror Image to make you harder to deal with. No ASF in light armor which is nice, and you don't need to UMD for cure spells.

Paladin / Sorcerer
Mentioned above is great for playing off a high charisma for saves and spells, not to mention the use of smite evil to bypass DR

Paladin 2 / Monk 2 / Sorc 1
So this one is a little MAD but you get amazing saves, a whole bunch of feats thanks to Monk, and evasion. It also allows you to use a reach weapon and then kick people if they get too close.

I'm a fan of Paladin2/Bard3/DD, though this isn't as good on the blasting front.

Scarab Sages

Ugh, I'm sleepy. Totally forgot about the core thing. :P

Seconding barbarian/bard/DD. A friend of mine built one and it works tremendously well almost by accident.

Silver Crusade

Is the extra smite a non core feat?

Silver Crusade

Thank you all for your input, I kinda like the idea of a paladin/sorcerer. especially with the ability to have CHA to saves. 2 levels is good in that class. He will be tough when he needs to be. In PFS Core would I be able to buy things? My highest level characters are 2nd level and so I dont have too much stuff.

Extra Smite does not exist in Pathfinder.

Silver Crusade

IIRC I saw it in a Dragonlance book.

If I have detected evil the smite should not be wasted correct?

So for the paladin sorcerer build, how would you handle armor? Would you wear the best armor you can and worry about spell failur or what?

It is a little more than that. Iirc, detect evil first tells you if evil is within the 60ft cone of the spell, then gives you more detailed information. Assuming you used detect evil and detected something evil, smite will work on it. There are ways to fake alignment, but I've never (at least in my experience) come across somebody faking an evil alignment.

It's not guaranteed. A paladin can check a single person for an evil aura, but there are ways to mess with auras -- e.g., a lawful neutral priest of an evil deity will detect as evil because of the aura class feature, but will not himself be evil, so smiting him would have no effect other than wasting a smite.

Also :

Paladin 2
Figther 2
Bardo (or sorc) 1
DD x

i'always play DD as ha melee character and only use spell to buff

Mage armor, ring of protection, flight, natural armor, etc. DD also have d12 hit dice, so they do have the bases covered.

There are several routes you can take with Core:

If you want to mainly be a combatant, barbarian 2 (for Moment of Clarity and the ability to select the Extra Rage Power feat)/bard 3/dragon disciple 4/bard +3 works fairly well. Paladin 3/bard 2/dragon disciple 4/paladin +3 will have stronger defenses and healing, but will do less damage vs. non-evil foes. Using bard as the arcane caster lets you wear light armor (or mithral medium armor) without worrying about spell failure.

If you want more/better spells, you might consider [barbarian or paladin] 2/bard 1/wizard 2/dragon disciple 4 (advance wizard spellcasting)/eldritch knight 3 over the "traditional" [barbarian or paladin] 2/sorcerer 3/dragon disciple 7. A bard dip often works well with wizard (Bardic Knowledge for a "master of lore") and the flexibility of options with a wizard's prepared spells day-to-day can be useful in many circumstances.

Arcane Armor Training and a mithral chain shirt (magical at higher levels) usually works pretty well at 5th level (which is when a paladin 2/sorcerer 3 can take it). Other than self-healing with Lay On Hands, there aren't many demands for swift actions (Quicken Spell not really being useful without 5th-level spell slots).

Here are many useful spells with only verbal components - true strike, blur, displacement, and many others :)

I'd rather use arcane strike, especially if you are using the claw/claw/bite granted by dragon disciple.

You probably won't be using Arcane Strike in the same round you cast a spell, though; or any other swift action for that matter (especially in Core). At the point you can cast a Quickened spell (either with a spell slot four higher than normal or a 35,000 gp rod), Arcane Strike is pretty underwhelming, anyway.

I kinda of like the description in the Guide that talks about how to build the dragon type, blasts from a distance and when he needs to gets into fights with melee.

I had a DD in 3.5, he was a cleric/sorcerer 1/DD (red) who played in 3.0 modules. He was supposed to have been a long long long long long long long relation to Ashardalon. I would like to do a metallic dragon though.

The Exchange

Moving closer Felicitas bends down to the dwarven woman and speaks up. "Good woman, wich way did the bandits go?"
SenseMotive: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (13) + 14 = 27
