50 Shades of Rage: Flavoring The Barbarian's Signature Power

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

I play this tune a lot, so apologies to those tired of hearing it, but I feel that a lot of players and DMs get caught up on the name of a class or ability, and it narrows their thinking. Vital Strike, for example, has nothing to do with precision damage. Barbarians can come from all walks of life. And Rage, despite the name, can be so much more than just berserk fury.

That's why I created this list. 50 Shades of Rage: Flavoring The Barbarian's Signature Power. While I doubt everyone will like everything on the list, hopefully there's something there for everyone.

Um, I read through your list and the two barbarians I played don't fit on it.

Muffin was a gnome barbarian born in the Sodden Lands under the Eye of Abendego perpetual hurricane. Life was tough, she was tougher (Con 20), but she left home to be a sailor. She ended up shipwrecked (Souls for Smuggler's Shiv module) and struggled for survival, learning to channel her rage into climbing and swimming. Her rage was Rage against the Storm, the primal desire for survival.

Val Baine was the adopted daughter of a prominent wizard in the town Torch in Numeria. Her father Khonnir did not want her to lose sight of her Kellid heritage, so he hired a Kellid caravan guard to teach her the Kellid language and culture. But Val was a willful imp, and also persuaded the guard to teach her combat, barbarian style. Meanwhile her father taught her wizardry and technology. When her father went missing on a vital mission (Fires of Creation module) and some older friends formed a search party to rescue him, they invited her along. Encountering dangerous creatures on the way, she charged into battle with cheerful enthusiasm, yelling "Nerdrage!" Her friends told her that that is not what nerdrage meant, but she didn't care. Her rage was Unbridled Enthusiasm. It could also be shoehorned into your #3 Elemental Might and #50 Black Powder Frenzy, since she is a gun-toting savage technologist bloodrager of the Air Elemental bloodline, but her airy nature manifests as enthusiasm and the crackle of electricity.

I'm not suggesting that I've covered every possible iteration. That's impossible. The list is more for people who are stuck, and are looking for different takes. Good on you for doing something unique that I didn't think of!

This would be more interesting if each one was accompanied by an alternate trait of some kind, such as a replacement for fast movement, trap sense, etc.

I don't create new content without a publisher's backing. Since this is just an article I wrote, and not something I was contracted for by Paizo or a third-party company, I didn't invent any new mechanics. Just made suggestions based on what already exists.
