I know you made a ruling on GWF style, but I did a bit of a look and found this Sage Advice
so, if you are still fine with it, its ok but just wanted to let you know.

Interesting i hadn't seen this before, but I saw two tweets by mike mearls himself, once stating that it doesn't work and once that it does.
I'll keep my ruling for now. Unless it somehow proves overpowered it shouldn't be an issue in PbP.
This is Xynen, here's my submission, all the info is on the profile let me know if you need me to add/remove/alter anything.
Great! I will give it a once-over soon.
I know you didn't mention the UA: Eberron as something you're allowing for creation but... never hurts to ask. Would you be willing to allow a Changeling?
Either way I'm interested and would be more than ready to pull something together real quick, either a rogue, a warlock or a wizard (surprised there wasn't one submitted)
Sorry, no Eberron.

Your quarterstaff attack should be +2, damage should get a -1 modifier
Your dagger should deal 1d4+2 damage in melee
I'd like to see a physical description of your character too
Think my quarterstaff should be +1 actually, in any case not sure how a +21 ended up there. Everything should be fixed, physical description added to the bottom of the page (in the backstory spoiler).

Ideal: Friendship. Material goods come and go. The bonds of friendship last forever. If someone is willing to stand by you in the worst of times, return the favor. All the gold in the world can’t match the value of a good friend.
Bond: I swindled and ruined someone who didn’t deserve it. I seek to atone for my misdeeds but might never forgive myself. I had been assured by someone who was a friend I was doing the right thing. I should have listened to that voice of doubt…
Flaw: I can’t resist a pretty face. What, you think humans are the only ones who appreciate beauty? *chuckle* You have much to learn.

Looks alright so far. Your attack and damage is one point short, other than that it checks out.
Here is a more finalized version of Vorrak
Let me know if its ok or if you want me to copy yours exactly.
I am actually considering starting in 1 level of fighter and then RPing going into paladin (If I'm taken ofc). hmmm
You don't have to stick 1:1 to the example in every detail, i just would like the genreal layout to match so I find everything where I'm expecting to find it and can check everyone's stats quickly.
Venali Auondril |
Alright, pretty sure everything is in order. I would like to point out that I sold the dagger I started with (for the 2 gold he has on his person), and used his starting gold from his background to purchase a rapier. (If that wasn't already obvious from just looking at things.)
Let me know if anything needs changed, or if you would prefer I not have a video game character tied into my background. ;D

Looks like we have two very similarly named elven rogues in the running. Don't worry though, there is enough space for that. Might even make for some interesting roleplaying if both of you end up being picked.

I would've never noticed hadn't you said that. I suppose you will pick up rapier as your level 2 proficiency. You may be able to loot a shortsword (which as a high elf you would be proficient with) from one of the early game encounters if you need something to tide you over.

War Caster
Prerequisite: The ability to cast at least one spell
You have practiced casting spells in the midst of combat, learning techniques that grant you the following benefits:
• You have advantage on Constitution saving throws that you make to maintain your concentration on a spell when you take damage.
• You can perform the somatic components of spells even when you have weapons or a shield in one or both hands.
• When a hostile creature’s movement provokes an opportunity attack from you, you can use your reaction to cast a spell at the creature, rather than making an opportunity attack. The spell must have a casting time of 1 action and must target only that creature.
Psionics: As a student of psionics, you can master and use psionic disciplines and talents. Psionic Talents A psionic talent is a minor psionic effect you have mastered. At
1st level, you know one psionic talent of your choice (see the talent options later in
this class description). You learn additional talents of your choice at higher levels, as shown in the Talents Known column of the Mystic table. Psionic Disciplines A psionic discipline is a rigid set of mental exercises that allows a mystic to manifest psionic power. Such disciplines are divided into two categories: lesser disciplines and greater disciplines. A mystic masters only a few disciplines at a time. At 1st level, you know two lesser disciplines of your choice (see the discipline options later in this class description). You learn additional disciplines of your choice at higher levels, as shown
in the Disciplines Known column of the Mystic table. You must be at least 5th level to learn a greater discipline. In addition, whenever you gain a level in this class, you can replace one discipline you know with a different one of your choice. You can replace
a lesser discipline with a greater discipline, but only if you are at least 5th level.
Psi Points:
You have an internal reservoir of energy that can be devoted to the psionic disciplines you know. This energy is represented by psi points. Each psionic discipline describes effects you can create with it by spending a certain number of psi points. A psionic talent requires no psi points. The number of psi points you have is based on your mystic level, as shown in the Psi Points column of the Mystic table. The number shown for your level is your psi point maximum. Your psi point total returns to its maximum after you finish a long rest. The number of psi points you have can’t go below 0 or over your maximum.
Mystic Order: Order of the Awakened Mystics
dedicated to the Order of the Awakened seek to unlock the full potential of the mind. By
transcending the physical, the Awakened hope to attain a perfect state of being—focused
on pure intellect and mental energy.
The Awakened are skilled at bending minds and unleashing devastating psychic attacks, and
are able to read the secrets of the world through psionic energy. Awakened mystics who take to adventuring excel at unraveling mysteries, solving puzzles, and defeating monsters by turning them into unwilling pawns.
* Mind Mastery
At 1st level, you gain the mind meld and thought spear psionic talents (these are in
addition to the talents you gain in the Mystic table). If you already have either one,
you can pick any other talent to replace it.
* Awakened Expertise
Starting at 1st level, your focused mental training grants you extended knowledge. You
gain proficiency in two skills of your choice. In addition, choose one skill you are proficient in. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses that skill.
Psi Points: 4
Psi Limit: 2
Disciplines:
Conquering Mind
(Lesser discipline; awakened)
By channeling psionic power, you gain the ability to control other creatures by substituting your will for their own.
*Psychic Focus.
While focused on this discipline, you gain proficiency in one of the following skills
of your choice: Deception, Intimidation, Performance, or Persuasion. You can change the chosen skill each time you apply your focus to this discipline.
* Exacting Query (2)
As an action, you target a creature that you can see within 120' of you. The target must make an Intelligence saving throw (it succeeds automatically if it is immune to being charmed). On a failed save, the target truthfully answers one brief question you ask it as part of this action, provided that it understands the question. On a successful save, the target is unaffected, and you can't use this ability on it again until you finish a long rest.
*Occluded Mind (2)
As an action, you target a creature that you can see within 120' of you. The target must make an Intelligence saving throw (it succeeds automatically if it is immune to being charmed). On a failed save, the target believes one statement of your choice for the next 5 minutes, provided that it understands the statement. The statement can be up to ten words long, and must describe you or a creature or object the target can see. On a successful save, the target is unaffected, and you can’t use this ability on it again until you finish a long rest.
*Broken Will (5)
As an action, you target a creature that you can see within 120' of you. The target must make an Intelligence saving throw. On a failed save, the target is charmed until the end of its next turn, during which you choose its movement and action. On a successful save, the target is unaffected, and you can’t use this ability on that creature again until you finish a long rest.
*Psychic Grip (7, C)
As an action, you target a creature you can see. The target must make an Intelligence saving throw. On a failed save, you overload the creature with psychic energy. The target is paralyzed for 1 minute, but at the end of each of its turns it can make another intelligence saving throw. On a success, this effect ends. On a failure, you can use your reaction to force the target to move up to half its speed, despite being paralyzed.
Intellect Fortress
(Lesser discipline; awakened)
You forge an indomitable wall of psionic energy around your mind—one that allows you to launch reflexive counterattacks against your opponents.
*Psychic Focus.
While focused on this discipline, you gain resistance to psychic damage.
* Psychic Backlash (1).
As a reaction, you can impose disadvantage on one attack roll made against you if you can
see the attacker. If the attack still hits you, the attacker takes psychic damage equal to half your mystic level (rounded up).
*Psychic Parry (1–3).
As a reaction when you make an Intelligence, a Wisdom, or a Charisma saving throw, you gain a +2 bonus to that saving throw for each psi point you spend. You can use this ability after rolling the die but before applying the result.
*Psychic Redoubt (5,C).
As an action, you create a field of protective psychic energy. For the next 10 minutes,
you and creatures of your choice gain the following benefits while within 30 feet of you:
resistance to psychic damage and advantage on Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws.
Talents:
Mind Meld
Psionic talent
As a bonus action, you can communicate telepathically with one creature you can see within 120' of you. You don’t need to share a language with a creature for it to understand your telepathic utterances, and the creature understands you even if it lacks a language. You can allow a creature to respond to you telepathically, but it must understand at least one language in order to communicate this way. This ability to communicate lasts until the start of your next turn. You can’t communicate with an unwilling creature.
Night Eyes
Psionic talent
As an action, you grant yourself darkvision with a range of 30'. This benefit lasts for 1 hour.
Thought Spear
Psionic talent
As an action, you psychically strike one creature that you can see within 120' of you. The target must succeed on an Intelligence saving throw or take 1d8 psychic damage. The
talent’s damage increases by 1d8 when you reach 5th level (2d8), 11th level (3d8), and 17th level (4d8).
Personality Trait: There’s nothing I like more than a good mystery.
Ideal: Knowledge. The path to power and self-improvement is through knowledge.
Bond: I have an ancient text that holds terrible secrets that must not fall into the wrong hands.
Flaw: I speak without really thinking through my words, invariably insulting others.
I will have background up either tonight or tomorrow.

Ha! Minsc. While he was awesome, he didn't get along with Viconia very well.
(Sadly, unless we are starting at a different point in time than HotDQ is supposed to, ~1489 DR, Minsc will have died long ago. The player character from those games is well over a century old by 1479, so poor Minsc is likely in a stone coffin somewhere. Still, fits nicely into her early years!)

He's still alive, and currently in Neverwinter. The MMO explains that he spent awhile petrified.
You can actually talk to him in Protector's Enclave. He's over by the giant tree just north of the general shops.]
At this adventure's point in time, he'd still be stoned, so still not a worry :p

Ok - having a rare snow flake moment.
Kelemvor is the god of the dead that hates undead... so why his domain is death (with all the nasty necromantic spells that really suit a moustache twirling villain rather than a god of a clergy who actively seek out the unquiet dead) is anyones guess.
I will make a cleric of war and hope you hand wave it as the 'order militant' of the faith of Kelemvor - it seems you have an open door policy to tweaks and changes.
Standby.

Okies:
Character creation guidelines in case there is enough interest (so I don't have to put it in a later post that people can't find):
Sources: PHB.
Starting Level and Wealth 1 and you may choose to pick from the starting equipment of your class
You may choose a single weapon, armor or shield worth up to 15 gp for free. * Selected Longsword.
Alignment Any is open: LN
Ability Scores and HP 27 Done - Level 1 start?
Backgrounds You may mix and match elements from different backgrounds to create a custom background if you want, and also take the module specific Background features:
- Customised The Acolyte somewhat heavily. Undertaker Tools and Herbalism Kit fit the man who will bring comfort at your deathbed in what herbs etc he can, and then the skills to make a coffin, grave marker, dig your grave and perform the burial service... which fits the god and related branch of the faith to a 'T'
Where can I go to reference the module specific background features?
Trinkets You may take any number between 0 and 3 trinkets 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2 choose them freely or randomly generate them. They will likely not be of any story significance though, unless I happen to be inspired by one of them.
-- Small Rosewood Reliquary containing the finger tip bone of Saint Ulster
-- 1d100 ⇒ 31 A silver badge of a five pointed star / Changing it to Silver Badge of a Doomguide (that belonged to his adoptive father)
Character formatI'd like you to make an Alias with a profile layouted like this example. I want to be able to look up you character's stat information quickly and for that uniform statblocks are tremendously helpful. If you want to be especially DM friendly you can also add spoilers with descriptions of you class features, feats, spells etc. but that is hardly required.
Done - you'll see when I post the character. Crunch all done, background still running around my head but I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Adjusted Stealth to reflect Expertise bonus.
Finished (revised) backstory, appearance and personality. I'm not 100% happy with it and may make some changes before recruitment ends, but no drastic changes.
I've noticed that both Elf and Sailor give Perception, so switched my background skill proficiencies to those of the Criminal Background to avoid overlap. In practice this just means i added one extra skill (Performance). This is allowed, right?
Finally, is there any possibility for me to have (and be proficient with) a Saber instead of a Rapier? I've found this homebrew that puts it at exactly the same stats as a Rapier, except it deals slashing damage and costs 10gp more (which i would pay for with my starting 10 gp). I don't have any mechanical reason for this, its just that i find this much cooler than this.
Evendur "Grim" Greymantle |
Helaman here.
Quite proud of this character.
I totally get this is a Dragon themed campaign and I've an undead hating inquisitor type (with near sherlock holmes levels of passive perception and investigation... gotta love the Observant feat) but Kelemvor will guide this young man on the quest that is before him.
Hopefully I can leverage him into the Divine caster slot.
In the interests of openness: I am NORMALLY an excellent PbP-er, and can manage a post a day or more no worries, but I'm coming out of a mini breakdown of sorts. I am on the mend but if you check my game background it will explain the recent gaps in my posting a few weeks back. I'm slowly getting back into my PbP-ing.
I've only played one session of this module/adventure so I should be good to play.

Since you were a pirate you're both sailor and criminal, and as I said in the opening post You may mix and match elements from different backgrounds to create a custom background. So it's completely legit.
As for the saber. A saber would be a type of scimitar in my book. I don't want to allow any homebrew rules beyond what I laid out in the opening post (and the addition i made 4 posts later) because the spirit of fairness would entitle all players to get some sort of homebrew. I know this is a minimal alteration to the mechanics, but I have to stay consequent with this as I have already shot down other requests for homebrew for the same reason. Sorry.

Hadn't thought about that. It makes a lot of sense and i agree with your decision.
Xelaaredn |
How about fluffing the rapier as an elven thinblade? No statistical changes, just figure that in an isolated elven city with its own smiths and artisans, it makes more sense to find more artful elven weapons. That and the more artful weapon would be more likely chosen by a noble than a more common regular rapier, in my opinion.
Xelaaredn |
Though, and not trying to cause undue stress, would it really be game breaking to allow a pirate flavored rogue to have proficiency in scimitars rather than rapiers? And to fluff said scimitar into a cutlass?
I know it might seem like stepping into homebrew but... it's more or less just lightly refluffing the rogue as a pirate, right?

Many of the 1930s pirate films had Rapids and the hornblower series has lots of small sword (more or less another version of a shortsword) use.
