Mounted Ranger Advice

Advice

I'm going to be starting a campaign this week at 6th level. Playing a Human Ranger with the Wild Hunter and the Skirmisher archetypes, and planning to ride my Wolf companion. At 6th, the Wolf is still medium, but she will be large at 7th, so this first level will be a little rough.

Current feats are: Mounted Combat, Ride-By Attack, Trick Riding, Mounted Shield, Spirited Charge, and Undersized Mount. Undersized Mount will be retrained to Boon Companion at next level. Even with the feat, me and my gear are a heavy burden for the Wolf, so she's at -20 spd and -2 AC. I chose the Racer archetype for her though, so that helps make up for the speed loss a bit, and Mounted Shield helps with the AC.

Traits are Armor Expert and Reactionary.

Equipment includes a mithral breastplate and a +1 lance.

Single Hunter Trick is Sic 'Em, and main Animal Focus will likely be Bull, though I can switch it up as needed.

Any other suggestions for the build?

It looks like you're doing a mounted lance build....

My advice is honestly just play a cavalier. Mounted ranegrs are cool, but they should be archers not melee characters.

If you want to play a mounted melee character, you're honestly better off with the cavalier.

1. Spells...ant haul is a fixer to the problem.
2. If ranger than beast rider. Take a flying mount...

Actually, I would be cool with using something other than a lance. I just assumed if I came in here with a mounted build with Spirited Charge and wasn't using a lance, I'd be told to use a lance. Something spear-ish would be preferred though, so there aren't too many other options anyway. Also, since the Lance has a built-in ability to be used one-handed, I can use a shield too.

As for the Cavalier, I'm just not much of a fan. I'd prefer the combat style feats, hunter tricks, and animal focus to the teamwork feats, bonus feats, and order. Unless you have a specific combination in mind that the Cavalier can do, that the Ranger can't.

Ant Haul might be a good idea; could look into getting a wand maybe, or just springing for the belt; can an Animal Companion wear a magical belt?

Not sure what Ranger, Beast Rider, and a Flying Mount have in common. Beast Rider is a Cavalier archetype that specifies no flying mounts.

first, cavaliers and rangers are very differnt - with other usees.

i meant -beastmaster a archtype of ranger that can have ANY animal he want... take a roc.
also - monsterous mount open griffons.

Ranger is a bit better skills, some small amount of spells, and the archtype for any mount possible.

cavalier has a strong smite, super charging order of the sword and either a lot of feats or tactition.

both are cool classes.

I'm pretty set on a Wolf as my mount, so I don't really need the beastmaster archetype.

As for Cavalier vs Ranger when it comes to feats, Cavalier gets a bunch of Teamwork feats, but only a small amount of bonus feats; and the Ranger can ignore certain pre-reqs for his bonus feats, and gets some earlier than he should. We are ending around level 11 most likely, so being able to get Mounted Skirmisher at level 10 is kind of my capstone, which I couldn't get with any other build.

What teamwork feats are considered so worthwhile that it makes the Cavalier appear better than the Ranger?

But you don't want mounted skirmisher. If you're charging everywhere with a lance, you don't care about full attacks.

Hm. I guess I was misreading Mounted Skirmisher; I thought it was my pounce; that I could full-attack on a charge.

I would be more interested in a more balanced build; being effective both on and off the mount, as opposed to a pure charger build. Don't mind be unmounted but still fighting with my animal companion as a flanking buddy, etc.

Cavalier have emissey and order of the sword for chargers.
Free feats at level:
1, 5,6,8,9,12
Losing tactition.

Rangers need boon companion so minus 1 feats...
Order of the sword add mount str to charges. That's a lot...

And smite is great.

I love rangers , but mounted ? Cavalier won easy.

Nope, can't combine it with charge. Between spirited charge, using a lance, and the other bonuses you get your damage will be as much as a full attack, but you only have to make one attack at your highest BAB to get all that damage.

If your looking for a Charging Build that does not use a Lance you can try Horsemaster Cavalier. You can wield a Scimitar instead. The crit rate is much higher.

I have used the Beastmaster Ranger for a mounted build. My avatar was my PFS character that did it. Ranger offers things beyond damage. Skills and Spells is very nice. In PFS skills do matter. I use a Giant Gecko over a flying mount because it is easier to get a gecko into places. I used walls and low hanging Ceilings to create alternative charging lanes, and After Wheeling charge you can create some very unique routes. Archery is another very viable route as well.

If your playing in a campaign with lots of outdoors then yes a flying mount is the best you can get.

I actually found a 3rd party archetype that gives an Animal Companion to a Slayer in exchange for 2nd level talent, Slayer's Advance, and Stalker. I'll miss Stalker, but the Slayer is basically all I wanted in the class (was using archetypes for the Ranger to ditch spells and Favored Enemy; wanted to ditch Favored terrain too). The Slayer just has so many "you have this" features, which I prefer over "you can do this X times per Y time units".

So, the build is a Slayer now, and I know people don't discuss 3rd party stuff on the forums here much, but you could treat it as a Slayer build that got an Animal Companion via Nature Soul->Animal Ally->Boon Companion. Except I get 3 more feats than such a build. Any advice for such a build would be greatly appreciated, as mounts and slayers are both new for me. I already started a thread for Slayer magic items, which Fruian also graciously offered some great advice on.

Nature fang druid is also amazing.
Free feats for archery or lance . full 9 lvl spells. Full mount. 3/4 bab. D8 hp.
You can add trap finding , summoning and some buffs and heals while charging or arrow shooting off your flying mount.
It is.... Nice really.

Horse master is great for a spring attacking halfljng on a dog. 15-20 crit while you dash in and out doing x3 damage or x5 20 percent of the time.

Lastly I love cavalier 4, bard 1, battle herald with horse master feat for a full mount
