I actually hope for a brighter universe. High technology is generally conducive to the idea that people live longer happier lives. I definitely don't want that artificially restrained just for the sake of satisfying current trends.

Man, I hope not ... not that I finished watching Event Horizon...
... it's the only movie I've ever walked out of the theater on.

Bad Hellraiser rip-off because "in space!" = not worth my time.

I will admit, a dead world populated by zombies and ruled by necromancers and lich kings would be awesome in a totally metal sort of way. But full-on space horror? Nah

Dead Space

Though Dead Space had the "problem" of both the player and the main character becoming less frightened by the monsters as the series went on. Knowing you're playing a horror RPG or campaign takes some of the tension out of it. And admittedly my idea is more Doom or Slain then true horror so... yeah.

I look forward to having the possibility through both the system and the setting to get both dark and light and all those other shades too :-)

The Pathfinder-verse is already a pretty dark place... and a lot of the things that make it that way are, so far as we know, still going to exist in Starfinder.

The Aethera Campaign setting for pathfinder sounds kind of like what your looking for.
