I'd been worried that I would have to pop an entire creche of GM babies between now and GenCon in order to keep my beloved kitsunes. Part of me rebelled at the idea. I don't want to rush the creation of characters simply to reserve a race for future use. I know this may sound weird, but I dislike the idea of having a ton of unplayed characters in my profile. The very idea of it made me feel like a neglectful parent.

I prefer to have a few characters that I know deeply. I want my characters to be more than numbers... I want to breathe quirkiness, back story and silly accents into each and every one.

Thank you for letting us keep the Tien races this year. Thank you for my as yet unconceived kitsune, tengus, wayangs and nagajis. I'm so thrilled that we get to keep them.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Is it stated anywhere there's not gonna be any race retirements in season 8? I know the genie-kin races are announced in the new blog but can't find anything on the tien races.

I just assumed Hmm was at Paizocon and asked Tonya or John about it. :-)

Outrageous, with that kind of money they will become brash and demanding in no time... soon they will ask warm food and shelter.. and not to long after that "fair" treatment.

No, I think the regional "slightly reduced beating" is the true way to go:

Missbehave, you get a beating.

Don't get caught misbehaving, slightly more gentle beating.

Rat out someone else who misbehaved, only a slight pounding with fresh apples.

Rat out someone else and somehow mention your VOs devilish looks, only a slight pounding with rotten apples, they are so soft, it almost feels like a massage.

Fair an balanced, and if anyone ask where I got the idea... blame Flutter^^

Oh and I am also quite happy with the lack of retirement.

Shadow Lodge 4/5

I mean... you don't know there will be no race retirements. Given the debacle with Aasimars and Tieflings, they may announce the retirement the day it goes into effect.

Personally, I'd like to see Tengu, Wayang, Kitsune, and Nagaji rotate back out, all of those races (particularly Kitsune) are rare enough that it doesn't make sense for them to be always available.

They were asked directly if they would be retiring races and they said no. Not saying anything is one thing, but outright lying would get a lot of people to quit due to lack of trust.

I don't know how it is nationally, and internationally, but I don't see a lot of Tengu/Nagaji/Kitsune/Wayang in our region. They are still rare, despite being open, from my POV.

Take that for what it's worth.

I haven't seen the Tien races dominate like tieflings and aasimar did. They're good for some things but not better than the traditional races.

In all seriousness, I see very few of any of the Tien races in these parts. Aasimar and tieflings actually STILL outnumber them.

Lantern Lodge 5/5

'Round here, there's a pretty good number of Nagaji and Kitsune.

While I was hoping that the rotation would happen again, to keep things fresh, I'll be happy for the people who can make inordinate amounts of foxes. Do your thing, honey badgers.

Possibly! Most of the people around me play humans, half-elves, or half-orcs (in that order), although gnomes are surprisingly popular too. There are a moderate number of halflings and kitsune, few dwarves and wayangs, and nearly no nagaji (I have seen two).

Oh, and aasimars/tieflings. There's a decent number of those; at least as many as halflings/kitsune, if not more. I think a bunch of people have them but they aren't played often.

3/5 5/5

My highest level character is an aasimar paladin-sorcerer, but my next 3 characters are:
Half-elven bloodrager
Sylph monk/rogue
Kitsune sorcerer

That last one would never have been created if they were not made legal for free, so I'm definitely pleased to see interesting race options opened up. They do in fact encourage at least some players to think of new interesting character concepts.

For having a whole murder of tengu, I only played one scenario with a tengu this past weekend at PaizoCon... the rest of the time was spent lining Rae (my human bard) up to get ready to have a sudden... 'growth spurt' of pregen application credit.

Rae (my -10) is currently tied with Wei Ji (my tengu -1) for the 'lead' on PFS levels (9).

Current Demographics:

Tengu: 8
Human: 4
Half-orc: 2
Half-elf: 1
Halfling: 1
Kitsune(?): 1
Suli: 1
Blob(undetermined): 2

4/5 5/55/55/55/5 ****

The big issue wasn't so much the Tieflings and Aasimars, as it was the SLA backdoor to fast-track Prestige Classes. that was closed at basically the same time.

I will give that the Tieflings and Aasimars were very strong options, especially if you have the corresponding 'Blood of' book.

~

The Kitsune, Nagaji, Tengu, and Wayang don't have the same issues; High level SLAs (SL 2-3), around a dozen different ability spread options...

~

I would prefer to see race retirements for a purely pragmatic reason... to help keep the number of options more manageable... we already have 40 classes (including the Unchained variant classes) and 7 Core Races.

The Current number of Always Available Race options is 11, and we are looking to add an additional 4...

Hey, I only have 3 :-). Or is it four?

But I have restrained myself and have NONE in Core :-) :-)

Grand Lodge 4/5 5/55/55/55/5 **** Venture-Captain, Minnesota

As much as I love kitsune, I only have one in PFS play so far. My active characters:

Humans: 2
Half-elf: 1
Kitsune: 1

__

I also have a bunch of GM babies that have only been played once each, mostly in evergreens.

Half-orc: 1
Undine: 1
Aasimar: 1
Unnamed Core Mystery Blob: 1

__

I want to concentrate on only a few characters, rather than many. But I'll admit that I adore kitsunes, and hope to build a few more someday. I love the furry littlle tricksters!

Hmm

4/5 5/55/55/55/5 ****

Limiting it to 11 Race options isn't very 'limiting'

40*11=440 Current Race/Class combinations.

~

CORE options

11*7=77

~

The numbers are not even in the same area code... There is a ridiculous number of options already, keeping it at 440 combinations instead of adding another 160 combinations is not limiting options, it is just changing what some of the combinations can be.

Nagaji are the most numerous locally -- we had a group of five who all played together as a group for a while. Then there are a few scattered kitsune, and I think my son has the only Tengu. No wayangs yet, but I've got a wayang Paladin/Ninja I'll start playing soon.

I have to admit, the whole, "We have X classes so why do we need more races?" thing vexes me. When did race become mutually exclusive with class? If Pathfinder had 400 classes and only 1 available race (human), the fact that there would be 400 race/class combinations doesn't change the fact that there's only one race available.

We're still working through the bumper crop of aasimars and tieflings here and I don't think that any of them did the spell like ability thing. A key ingredient to their popularity was that they were the best race for just about every build. It was very close to "pick your two favorite stats and use that"

Truly, it is a silly place.

Shadow Lodge 4/5

Local running gag: Count how many full humans you can get from all the halves and partials(suli, etc). The result's usually around one and half. E.g, nagaji, dwarf, half-elf and sylph = 1 human.

disclaimer: No actual percentages are used.

2/5

I have made a grand total of one kitsune PFS character, and then in its first game over half the party was kitsune. It put me off ever making another. They are fluffed as super rare, but in the local PFS group they have become very, very common - especially for rogues and charisma casters.

I don't mind the few Nagaji around as they seem to be more about an excuse to play Int 5 rather than to abuse anything.

Still, I would be happy if they were all eventually rotated out again.
