Interest Check for Slow Paced Throne of Night Campaign

Recruitment

I just realized that I can host an online play through of the Throne of Night campaign and I'm interested in seeing how many people would be interested in playing?

Here are the two books in question -

Throne of Night—Book #1: Dark Frontier

http://paizo.com/products/btpy92m8?Throne-of-Night-Book-1-Dark-Frontier

Throne of Night—Book #2: The Earth's Wound

http://paizo.com/products/btpy95zr?Throne-of-Night-Book-2-The-Earths-Wound- PDF

I haven't decided on a setting to place it in yet but I would be running the Explorer version of the game, although I would allow more than dwarf characters, rather than running the Conqueror version. Game would start at 1st level and I would advance characters at certain story points rather than wait for XP to build up.

If I can find 4 interested players I will start this game.

Sure. So we'd be 'good' races?

Olaf the Holy wrote:

Characters don't have to be of a 'good' race or even a good person. The only alignment I wouldn't allow is Chaotic Evil. Beyond that I would be open to anything as long as it was in an official rule book.

No homebrew races though, I've been burnt by that before.

Maybe so. Are you proposing play by post? Here on paizo?

Would it be pbp? What do you think the creation rules would be like, point buy or something like that?

I'd probably run a warpriest of some description. I think dwarven archers are neat, so probably something like that.

Or a half-orc who managed to defend a dwarf, and is standing up for dwarven culture.

If you could have patience with a new player (both Pathfinder and PbP (I assume)), I would love to join. I have RPG experience from many moons ago, but I am anxious to join a game and have some fun (and learn about the system and PbP). Thanks!

Definitely interested. I can post daily and am very familiar with Pathfinder.

One of my all time favorites was "The night below." A 2E boxed campaign.

Yeah it would be Play By Post here on the Paizo forums.

Olaf the Holy wrote:

It would definitely be point buy and you'd have 20 points to spend. Full hitpoints to start with and 200gp to spend for stuff.

I'm not exactly the most experienced DM with the Pathfinder system but I've got plenty of patience and a can do attitude so you would be more than welcome to join. Your welcome!

Game posts would be once every two days, probably twice a week plus once in the weekend if I'm not busy. I never played the Night Below but it looks awesome!

The setting will be Golarion. I'm just looking for a place to set the starting point. Suggestions?

Well, my group hasn't done much underground. Most of the AP's seem to avoid it. However 'Serpent skull' has a large underground city set below Saventh-Yhi, the fabled lost city found by the Pathfinders society, and the main setting for SS.

While adventuring there our party met a Drow assassin, who made a temporary alliance with us. Telling us the stairs in the under city lead to the Darklands, where she was from.

She was hunting escaped Drow traitors, allied with the Serpent folk we were fighting. It was a very tense and mistrusting alliance.

So, a known entrance to the Darklands, in an area controlled by the Pathfinders does sound like a good starting point. Hired by the Pathfinders to make an expedition into the dangerous world below?

Or perhaps just adventurers doing what they do best and charging in blindly in search of loot. ;)

Any ideas on races and classes?

I have been trying to find a place for my city-raised, almost human second generation half orc paladin Redeemer archetype of Abadar....

Cool - if it's OK I roll up a vanilla dwarf fighter (core rules?), I will.

I think of rolling up a Empyreal bloodline Dwarven sorcerer

I've been GMing on here for the past few years and would love to join in on this game and also give advice for the PbP formatting stuff.

I would be interested in making an Undead Lord Cleric, a Summoner or an Alchemist... got to narrow it down though.

Either of those are good jumping off points. I think we can decide that when we get the group sorted out.

I'll allow any Race or Class as long as it's covered in an Official Paizo book or one of the official third party providers.

See above. That would be fine.

WolverineBlue wrote:

That would be A-ok.

Would be happy to have the advice to be honest! Any of those concepts would be cool.

Right looks like we've got enough interest for this game so I'll get started creating a thread for it. I've also done some research and the longest a thread for this particular AP lasted in this forum is about a 1000+ posts and then it kind of petered off and was only through part of the first book I think. I'll try and do better.

Ok so we are now in the Recruitment stage of things now!

If you are interested in playing then please post your character concept, no longer than a paragraph please, after this post.

Once I've got up to 8 characters that we're all happy with, 6 spots have already been taken by the posters listed below, I'll open up the Gameplay thread and we can start adventuring!

The 6 people that have already booked spots in the game are -

Olaf the Holy,
KenderKin,
WolverineBlue,
DBH,
ravenoak,
GM Amsheagar

That means I have 2 spots available, unless one of the above posters doesn't want their spot. It is first come first serve so the first 2 people to post their character concept after this post will get those 2 spots.

Characters will be built with point buy for stats and you'd have 20 points to spend. Full hitpoints to start with and 200gp to spend for stuff. You also have two traits. Any Race or Class is fine as long as they are in an official Paizo book or third party provider.

Any other questions ask the here.

Silver Crusade

I would like to dot in to play a druid. I would be taking archetypes/alt racial traits to focus on the underground nature of the campaign. I will most likely build this as a dwarf, though may take a look at the other old-school underground races (drow, duergar, svirfneblin) to see if that creates a more interesting build. If I choose one of those, I will definitely play as a good character (escape from bondage situation, or something like that).

I'd love to join in if you'll have me!

I am flexible on character concept since I have plenty and can fill in a needed niche if necessary. Although with this many, hopefully we are pretty well covered. If so, I have been itching to give the Occult Adventures classes a try and see how they play.

My top choices (both likely dwarven) are:

- an earth-focused kineticist (going for the earthbender concept from Avatar, which was obviously much of the inspiration for this class) or

- a shadow caller spiritualist, cursed with a living shadow but learning to make use of that curse (basically not a spiritualist by choice, but running with it and starting to appreciate the power it gives him)

But like I said, I can easily fill in any other gaps. I also like skill-focused characters (rogue being obvious choice, but there's some other nice ones like investigator, too) if necessary.

Olaf the Holy wrote:

I was planning on a half-orc as well, perhaps taken in by the dwarves as an infant or child. It would seem less random if we were related to each other and were taken in at the same time.....

Dwarves!
Will you all be the same clan?

I'll sit down tomorrow and work on an alchemist.

Under the test box, there is a little format tool. How to format your text. that is majorly useful.

I would forgot the D20 for maps, since some people use their phones for PbP and have a hard time using it on their phones. I use Google Slides to bypass that issue. You can also make notes that your players can't see.

My attempt at a character concept (feel free to criticize or give pointers):

Varkas Davarum, at your service!

Varkas is a Dwarven miner from Highhelm who has set on adventure hearing the call to liberate Dammerhall. A fighter now, Varkas is young, inexperienced, and brash, but he yearns to learn the arts of combat while seeing the world. There is also vengeance driving Varkas on this journey, one steeped in pain from a tragedy that befell him and his loved ones when he was a small child. Varkas is skilled with his battleaxe and warhammer, and he also fancies himself a novice armorer. With seasoning and some luck, Varkas hopes to bring honor to himself and all fellow dwarves.

Dorgan Valknut and I may be at your service!

Dorgan is slightly wild eyed sorcerer from Highhelm that left with his parents when he was young. The journeying through the lands activated his hidden celestial bloodline when they stayed in magic rich areas. His parents became afraid of him as Dorgan embraced his magic. One night while he was sleeping his parents quietly slipped away leaving him all alone. Something broke in his mind and he raged in power that day and then vowed to make his parents proud of him as he brings honor to his clan.

Okay, I was looking at Alchemists, thinking of what to create... when i remembered that i've already created one that never got selected. This is Louisiana Jane and her flying squirrel Data.

This rugged explorer joins the group and looks around. "Nice to meet ya. Call me Jane."

Kenderkin here!

So here is a rough sketch of my nearly human looking half-orc redeemer paladin, discovered as an abandoned babe and raised and trained by dwarves, accepted and knighted by Abadar fully committed to bringing law to the dark world below...

That almost human trait is useful.

I'm having a helluva time finding out if I can have a language in addition to Dwarven and Common. My INT is +1, and I have no ranks in Linguistics.

Varkas checking in now, with alias and avatar! (I can't seem to find a good blackhaired, young dwarf lol)

WolverineBlue wrote:

I had to do some research on this as well, I was able to find it here that you get a number of languages equal to your Init modifier. So if you have an Int of 12, you get 3 languages, your base 2+1, if you have an int of 20, you get 7, Base 2+5.

Thank you - I reread the Intelligence description, and it's clear as a bell.

Found another pair of entrances that lead to the Darklands.

The Candlestone caverns in Andorian, and Hollow mountain in Varisia. Trouble is both are major dungeons, getting through them would be tough, let alone reaching the Darklands!

He plans to dip into Ranger for a few levels but is mainly the go to guy for sneaking and traps.

You're in Zin Z'arin. As for alignment I'm fine with evil characters but no Chaotic Evil Characters. They don't play well with others.

Ken Marable wrote:

We'd love to have you Ken Marable! And with that we have our eight players.

If you are reading this and would like to play but aren't 1 of the 8 players -

Olaf the Holy,
KenderKin,
WolverineBlue,
DBH,
ravenoak,
GM Amsheagar
Zin Z'arin
Ken Marable

then I'm sorry but you won't be able to join until one of those players have dropped out. Feel free to read along though!

Ok lets put those on the backburner for now. How does everybody feel about setting it on the continent of Arcadia? Or more correctly underneath it?

I am fine with any setting. Do we want to open a discussion thread to hash out details?

I can deal with any setting, but I'm sure there will be major holes in my backstory, but oh well...I'll get better at this as I learn the lore.

I am okay with any setting. I can adjust my backstory if I need to.

I found this http://paizo.com/people/Thiera (which is derived from this https://gist.github.com/anonymous/027b5a46b3b4c2df6f4b ). I found it helpful, as a new guy, to building my PbP online character sheet.

The Darklands are an unknown wherever we start, so Arcadia is fine by me.

Pavo is from Cheliax and I believe they have a colony there, which gives him a reason to be in Arcadia looking for work.

Silver Crusade

If it's okay, I think I'm going to build my druid as an Oread. They're said to have a strong affinity for dwarves, so he'll be able to share a background with any of the dwarven characters.

Here is an example of Google Slide maps as you can see in my game Quest for Perfection i have it up on the small description along side of each characters Initiative rolls (in a spoiler) so i can quickly grab them and roll for the players. In games which rely on perception checks, I've also put their perception up there so i can roll it as well.

The way i currently have Louisiana Jone's profile set up is somewhat extreme, but i can easily look back and tell when i bought something and how much it was.

Can someone take a look at my profile and tell me if it contains enough information and if it's in a suitable format, please?

KenderKin wrote:

Done. A new discussion thread is up and I've posted a couple of topics for everybody to discuss.

Looks like most people are fine with starting in Arcadia. As for backstory it generally doesn't come up in the game unless somebody brings it up. What I'm more interested in is your characters shared history.

You all worked together before this so you should have one major event that brought you guys together and then got you to Arcadia. If it's really good and everybody contributes I may give you guys some kind of gift. If it's terrible you all get nothing! NOTHING!

WolverineBlue your character looks fine to me but I'm not an expert so if anybody has some suggestions feel free to share them.

Zin Z'arin an oread character is fine.

Thanks DM Amsheager! I have to try out that Google Slide program and see if I can get my head around it.

Ok all discussion is now in the new thread, see you all there!
