Entropic Shield vs thrown giant rocks or siege engine munitions?

Rules Questions

As per the title, I'm just wondering whether this spell's effect might include big rocks thrown by giants or munitions fired from siege engines.

A magical field appears around you, glowing with a chaotic blast of multicolored hues. This field deflects incoming arrows, rays, and other ranged attacks. Each ranged attack directed at you for which the attacker must make an attack roll has a 20% miss chance (similar to the effects of concealment). Other attacks that simply work at a distance are not affected.

Rock throwing uses an attack roll, so yes the spell should work. Indirect fire siege engines use a special targeting mechanic, not an attack roll as such, so probably not. Direct fire siege weapons use a normal attack roll, so again you'd be okay.

So this mean you can valiantly and heroically walk toward the giant/siege machine, boulders and bolts bounci off your magical shield, epic, awesome, cinematic....if you, like a sane person, hide behind a building, you just get crushed and smashed by the building and whatever hit it, because hiding isn't awesome...right?

LOL - nobody said that answers in the Rules Questions forum needed to make sense... just follow RAW. Now if you're asking what specific GMs would rule in an actual game, then that's another matter (and forum). ;)

I seem to recall siege munitions and giants' boulders being singled out often as exceptions for magical defenses vs ranged attacks. Maybe I'm thinking about older editions.

Scarab Sages

Some things do single them out.
