Rich at lv2

Advice

What would class would you be and what would you do with 5000 gold at just starting lv2?

A Rogue that buys a bunch of dangerous animals that their Handle Animal skill can't reliably control? :-)

In a similar vein, hire level 3 or above mercenaries and prepare for their inevitable betrayal?

If you want your GM to hate you, there's the rich parents trait. You would have to be a con artist. Maybe some sort of illusionist? There is also minor creation which comes later. It let's you sell valuable stuff and run before it vanishes.

Druid or Ranger and Tigers... all the tigers.

Once your GM has killed you for doing that and you create a more serious character I'd probably go with some sort of heavy armour wearing martial, cash at low levels is going to likely to effect them more than others I suspect. With just a Dex of 12, Full Plate +1 and a Heavy Shield +1 you're sitting at AC24, add a bunch of potions, or a couple of minor wondrous items and you'll be essentially able to ignore almost any physical attack you'll encounter at level 2 and for a bit after.

Wow, really no useful advice on what you'd do if you could create any character at lv2 and start with 5000gp instead of only ~1000-1500?

Edit Suthainn has a valid suggestion. Thank you.

Anyone with a craft or profession skill who has lived on a gold piece per week for ~15 years

Edit: 6 years. Take a 10.

I'm not asking how one would reach such a value. I already have the gold as I'm creating a new character at lv2. I'm asking what you'd do with that much gold so early.

Pfft. That's easy. Any class, buy a house.

Give us a little more information. Is the campaign supposed to involve wilderness travel? Is it centered around a particular community? Strictly a dungeon crawl?

Thinking about it, if I was looking to optimise a character created with that gold to the maximum I'd focus on the characters ability to be a one man army. I'd go with a half orc paladin, sacred tattoo, fates favoured, full plate +1 (2650g), heavy shield +1 (1157g), cloak of resistance +1 (1000g). That leaves you a couple hundred gold for a weapon and basic equipment. Your AC will be at least 24, your saves will be incredible for a 2nd level character (6/3/6 before Cha and stat bonuses) and you could even take toughness as your feat if you wanted to have the HPs to survive anything that somehow manages to get past those defences. Offence will be decent with a one hander, good strength and instead of toughness, power attack if you felt like it.

I think with a character like that you'd probably need to ensure that you weren't overshadowing the rest of the party, he could probably solo most encounters given time and his AC and saves will grant him all the time he needs in most cases (not to mention his self healing).

Buy your +2 stat item early?

For someone who will be in melee if I was going to drop it all on one item I'd probably go with a Jingasa of the Fortunate Solider over a belt, crits are absolutely lethal in the first few levels and can one shot a character with ease, plus, you'll keep the item for probably your entire career so it's never wasted gold.

For a primary caster, yeah, a +2 stat item is probably a good choice.

ring of seven lovely colors.

You could start early with those dex-to-damage builds...

And you will even have 1k left over for various other items and supplies.

lvl 1: Mouser 1 (because you need mouser if you want to be tiny): Weapon Focus (bite)
lvl 2: Fighter (archetypes ok) 1: Slashing grace (bite)

Make sure you pump dex like there is no tomorrow. Charisma is a good second bet. I would recommend halfling as race, but you can do as you will.

Definitely a wand of some kind and then be a badass for several levels.

Magic Missle, CL 9, 37 charges = 4,995 gold
3rd level spell (Fly, Summon Monster 3, Haste, Fireball), CL 5, 22 charges = 4,950 gold
4th level spell (Black Tentacles, Dimension Door, Greater Invisibility, Summon Monster 4), CL 7, 11 charges = 4,620 gold

I can only buy wands at minimum caster level and only at full charges.

Either any-class with Handy haversack and a slew of utility alchemical items and scrolls.

Or any-class that wants good light armour and get the mithral breastplate early.

Some fun magic items then...

Pearl of Power, level 1 = 1,000
Wasp Nest of Swarming = 1,000
Necklace of Fireballs = varies
Slippers of Spider Climbing = 4,800
Goblin Skull Bomb = 1,200
Stubborn Nail = 100
Snapleaf = 750
Marvelous Pigments = 4,000
Bone Razor (a personal favorite) = 5,000
Sheath of Bladestealth = 5,000
