Getting into characeter

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

After some searching I've seen a few threads about learning who your character is and how to be that person better. However, in this case I'm more thinking of DM tactics to get everyone out of school/work/driving mode and into I'm a fantasy character mode. I find that this can be especially difficult if more than a month passes for a session.

I've tried having players recount previous sessions to get everyone remembering what's happening. We've started a few sessions with dinner and ate dinner in character (that went well!). Still, sometimes it seems like people aren't in character until we get some dice rolling, usually through combat and not in skills. But it doesn't always make sense to have a combat early in a session.

Do you guys have any techniques you'd recommend?

Hey, Beopere:

What we do at our table (to shake the shackles of reality off and "get into character") is we go around one-by-one and have each PC express how they feel with everything that has happened thus far in the campaign (usually just whatever the previous session was and not the entire campaign).

It's kinda like an out-loud journal-ing session that lasts for five minutes or so. This usually gets people excited to get back into the world and interacting with each other. We try and keep the intros brief and concise so the dice (and goblin heads!) can start rollin'.

It works for us. :3

I hope that was somewhat helpful! Cheers, Mate!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Sharky find that if goblin chief talk with silly Beavis-like accent and keep bringing up Evil Plans soon even players who had bad week at work start thinking about what tortures to inflict on human prisoners, what ways to murder gnomes, etc. Maybe DM have tougher time inspiring people, but even lowly NPCs can get in character and drive story forward (until they get eaten by goblins)
