Help Creating a Monk (First Time D&D Pathfinder)

Rules Questions

Hey everyone, just wanted some help creating my unchained monk, I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out my HP and also my Feats. I'm getting really confused about how many feats I can have available or what feats I should get.

First off My character is starting at Lvl 3 stats are as follows:
STR - 20 (+2 from Human) , DEX - 18, CON - 16, INT - 14, WIS - 16, CHA - 14

If I am correct I think I can have a total of 3 feats right now. But what I really wanted to know is does a bonus feat count for one of the three feats? I'm really confused so I just want to clarify. If they don't what feats would I automatically have being lvl three? I don't know if I'm making sense but I really need some help here :/ Thanks for reading and taking time, I'll try to respond to any questions but again I am know very little when it comes to character creation!

- Regard, David L.

First off, you'll be good at any class with those ability scores. How discuss generate those? Secondly, are you playing the original pathfinder monk or the unchained monk. Thirdly, I think you should have maybe six feats.

Those are the pre set stats that everyone has when you start out as a new player, and I am playing the unchained monk, I should have 6 feats in total at lvl 3? If so what feats would you recommend? again I am fairly new so I don't know too much about which feats are good, but I do know I want to use the Djinni Style later on so I would need elemental Fist leaving me 5 feats left.

Typically, you either roll 2d6+6 for each of your stats or you use a system called a point-buy from 15-25 points to figure out your ability scores. The only reason Ciaran brought it up was probably because those are very good scores, equating to a 64 point-buy. With a 64 point-buy, your character will pretty much obliterate every obstacle in sight, combat or otherwise. This is better explained here and should show in more depth how to typically generate ability scores. Ask your gm how you should generate your stats before proceeding any further however; they may want you to do it another way.

As for your feats, you get a feat every odd level and, as a human, you begin with an additional feat. Bonus feats from your class do not apply to how many other feats you get, and are purely a boon of the class. Unchained monk gives 2 bonus feats from a list as well as the feats stunning fist and improved unarmed strike by third level. All of these add together to equal 7 feats.

Also, elemental fist has a prerequisite of BAB+8 before a character can take it, so your level 3 monk with a BAB+3 does not qualify to take it. Good feats you could take include:
Toughness (+3 hp)
Improved Initiative (+4 initiative)
Combat Reflexes* (Bonus attacks of opportunity = Dex modifier, can make attacks of opportunity flat-footed)
Dodge* (+1 dodge bonus to AC)
Defiant Luck (1/day reroll natural 1 on a save or force enemy to reroll a critical confirmation)
Power Attack (-1 to hit, +2 to damage to melee attacks, can be turned off)
Weapon Focus(unarmed strike) (+1 to hit with unarmed strikes)
* = feat on bonus feats list for monks

Feats:
Level 1: feat for being level 1, can be any feat you qualify for
Level 1: bonus feat for being human, can be any feat you qualify for
Level 1: bonus feat for being a level 1 Monk, can only be taken from the Monk bonus feat list (Catch Off-Guard, Combat Reflexes, Deflect Arrows, Dodge, Improved Grapple, Scorpion Style, and Throw Anything).
Level 1: Improved Unarmed Strike for being a level 1 Monk
Level 1: Stunning Fist for being a level 1 Monk
Level 2: bonus feat for being a level 2 Monk, can only be taken from the Monk bonus feat list (Catch Off-Guard, Combat Reflexes, Deflect Arrows, Dodge, Improved Grapple, Scorpion Style, and Throw Anything)
Level 3: feat for being level 3, can be any feat you qualify for

That is a grand total of 7 feats with 2 of them decided for you and 5 you need to decide which feats you want.
