How do you carry a Bag of Holding?

I understand the puzzlement and trying to add descriptions to make things seem more realistic... magical spaces are confusing as you don't see these things in real life so your experience with them is zero. Even after reading this thread, it still may seem confusing... lol... "it's magic!"

sometimes people suggest things that aren't practical according to the rules as they are... no biggie... everyone has ideas that won't work. The 3.0/3.5 and PF rules define a concept of the game of "Let's Pretend" with paperwork...
It's mostly the GMs job to add details and players often provide that, it is a game of imagination.

So... this being a Rules board & thread, people tend to stick to the rules as written and not making up stuff. That's why you see some posts criticizing or saying things are out of scope. It's generally a conservative rules board as often people come here for answers or seeing if their idea stands up to review.

You might want to try out the homebrew thread for ideas etc. Once you go outside of rules as written(RAW) you've exceeded the scope of this board.

In Soviet Russia, Bag of Holding holds you.

I'd agree that sneaking into the party's camp to rob them would get old really fast, but if a goblin grabs your bag full of treasure off the ground during combat and runs away that seems kind of hilarious to me. I guess maybe I'm a bad person/DM.

If you give them a good chance to get it back its funny. Else it's just spiteful

Generally my characters carry their magical bags of holding the exact same way they carried the non-magical sacks (also known as Type I Lootmasters) that they owned before they looted enough stuff to purchase magical looting equipment.

i get it as a tattoo (also its a handy haversack). my dwarf fighter has it tattoo'd to the underside of his chin, he pulls anything he needs out of his beard basically
is this some odd house rule thing or is this something you can do within the rules somewhere?

It's from a sourcebook called inkantations which has all sorts of tattoo and piercing related goodness.

Unless the goblins have Plane Shift I'd assume that the party could probably get the bag back though it might require some work or perhaps some concessions - "Roofus hide bag and not give it back unless you bring him cake! Magic cake with explosive candles! You also call him King Roofus now!"

I guess Locate Object might be useful in those situations. It was one of the first 2nd level spells I took with my first 3e PC - "Kazaan Dhal never loses his keys!"

Our group treats bags of holding and handy haversacks both as having a shoulder strap, long enough to be slung diagonally across the PC's chest. No difference between the two in how they are carried, only in what they weigh and how quickly you can find things in them.

A sack with no carrying straps would have to be dropped every time you needed that second hand for a shield, off-hand weapon, spellcasting* or whatever. That's pretty annoying, and it's hard to see why the crafters of such items wouldn't realize that.

GM allows us to pull the strap over our heads and drop the bag as a free action; this is sometimes necessary because carrying one of the larger types pushes us into Medium encumbrance and cuts our movement in combat.

*Yes, I'm aware there is no rule that says somatic components for spells require more than one hand; but it seems like some of them likely would.
