PFS Ranger (Dandy)

Advice

I don't play much PFS, but I'm thinking of making a PFS Dandy. What would be the best Favored Nation to pick?

Any ideas?

I think it would depend a lot on what faction you decide to join.

Silver Crusade -> Mendev
Liberty's Edge -> Andorran or Chelliax
Scarab Sages -> Osirion

The above are just some examples. Although there are adventures all over, some factions are more likely to have an adventure in one area than another.

Dark Archive

By Favored Nation do you mean your characters homeland?

Dataphiles

Taldor would seem the most obvious choice for a Dandy to me, but I think Ustalav would be a really cool choice. Either way a character who specializes in the courtly graces of various nations would really shine in the Sovereign Court faction.

Favored Nation works like Favored Enermy.

Bonuses to Bliff, Diplomacy, Knowledge, Perception, Sense Motive and Survival,

and +2 to attacks and damage.

So it could be their homeland, or a nation they are trying to infiltrate , I guess.

The dandy has a favored nation in place of favored enemy.

First choice would be kortos: the island nation of absolom is home to a lot of PFS scenarios.

Taldor is in second if not a close place for first. You don't venture in taldor nearly as much but when you do there's probably some stuck up rick folk.

Dark Archive

Ah, so Dandy is an archetype then, gotcha.

Dark Archive

You could do Dark Archive and Cheliax or anyplace you think there might be named artifacts or the like.

Liberty's Edge

Lots of season 4 is in Varisia, and a Dandy Roleplaying would work there well.

Just remember that Favored Nation only works on officials and nobles of any given country. It won't give you a bonus against that random Osiriani Aspis agent you ran across, despite him being of that ethnicity and nationality.

Liberty's Edge

Hmm... with that in mind, it appears that ability won't come in handy but for a couple scenarios.

Shadow Lodge

Nagajor!

Just for Red Harvest.

Yes, the exact wording is:

"against courtiers, officials, nobles, and gentry from that nation." Seems like a lot would be up to a GM ruling to say who fits into this.

So I would assume picking Varisia wouldn't be great because there aren't a ton of Varisian nobles. right?

I'm starting to feel like Cheliax would be the best choice, but I guess it all depends on the scenario.

And here I thought this was just going to be about the highly suggestive writing of the archetype.

You might consider the Courtly Hunter as another option that will better meld with most PFS scenarios for the bulk of its class features. The main difference would be that you wouldn't get the slow Bard progression of spells that the Dandy gets, but you'd still have a lot of the social benefits, though they're more likely to be impactful as the Courtly Hunter.

While varisia is wild compared to a lot of nations, there are a lot of quests there that more than make up for it. Kaer magna and magnamar probably make Varisia a good third if not second choice.

I have to admit that I was looking at the Dandy, the Courtly Hunter, and Fey Speaker Druid. The Dandy's favored nation bonus is so narrow I'm not sure it will see much use. So, I'm now looking more strongly at the Courtly Hunter and the Fey Speaker Druid. I was disappointed that the Courtly Hunter does not get a shift to Charisma-based casting along with all the other shifts, and the loss of teamwork feats is a bit daunting. Serisan, would you be willing to talk about how you would build / play one? Because I'd love to do a more diplomatic hunter type!

Hmm

Nothing terribly surprising, really. No dips, maybe use an aasimar boon so Celestial Servant is an option for the companion. I'd probably play similar to Zara/Pumpkin - animal for attacking, character for talking/casting - but still able to bring the critter into places without using Carry Companion. I'd probably do a stat array close to 8/10/12/14/16/14 before racial modifiers.

Hmmm. This sounds like it might be fun.
