Liberty's Edge

I have a query regarding downloading the PDF versions of the rulebooks. I have bought Ultimate Combat, and it downloaded as a XXX.zip file. I was wondering why it does not come standard as a XXX.pdf file. As a zip, I can not figure out which file is the actual PDF. Also, can someone recommend a XXX.zip extractor. Can someone assist me. Thank you in advance

The reason for the zipping, is often related to file size.
Downloading the compressed zip file is easier than unzipped, less likely to crash or time out.

As for unzipping, I use 7Zip, or whatever came as standard on the PC or laptop I'm on at the time. All seem to work fine.
Can't link to a download, as I'm at work.

After unzipping, you should get one file for Mac users (MACOSX), and another for Windows.
Inside the Windows folder, you'll see further files. The files may begin with the product code (PZO, followed by numbers eg 123456) and possibly a descriptor such as high resolution vs low, and/or 'single file' or 'one file per chapter'.
Many of the hardbacks come in several versions, so you can choose the one best for you. 'One file per chapter' is good for when you want to keep several pages open at once.

If you get folders for Mac and Windows, your extractor is doing something weird.

For Ultimate Combat in particular, there are four choices on your My Downloads page:

"Single File" contains the whole book in one PDF file, just as printed, called "PZO1118E.pdf". Your unzipping utility may place it in a folder called "PZO1118E," or it might not place it in a folder at all.

"Lite–Single File" contains the whole book in one PDF file, with a simplified page background so that the file is smaller and therefore friendlier for viewing with devices with limited processor speed or memory. That file is called "PZO1118E-Lite.pdf". Again, your unzipping utility may place it in a folder called "PZO1118E," or it might not place it in a folder at all.

"One File per Chapter" breaks the book into 9 separate PDF files, each as printed. Your unzipping utility should extract these to a folder called "PZO1118E"; the individual files have names like "PZO1118 076-123 Feats.pdf".

"Lite–One File per Chapter" is the same as the above, but with the simplified page background. It should unzip to a folder called "PZO1118E-Lite"; the files are named as above.

The reason we zip multiple files is because it's easier for most clients than having to download all the files individually. The reason we zip single files is that if we didn't, some browsers would open them directly using a PDF plug-in, and that confuses a lot of people. (We used to do it the other way, so we know from experience that this way is less confusing to more people.)

Hello Gauss,

Snorter is correct. We zip the PDFs so that the downloads are smaller. We can also put all the types of files together in a single zip file (single file, one file per chapter, lite versions of both of those, and interactive maps for the Adventure Paths).

There are a few options for extracting .zip files. Windows has a built in one, but WinZip and 7Zip are both very popular ones. GoodReader is a popular option for Apple users as it is also a PDF reader.
