A Wizard Disguised as a Thief

Advice

So, we've all heard of the thief disguised as a wizard/cleric/spellcaster. Hell, there are entire archetypes devoted to the concept. But why don't we try to turn that around? I want to see your best build for a full caster meant to do everything a rogue does, but better.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

While there are spells to do almost everything, noone is going to believe you're a normal thief, spellcasting is apparently noticeable even if you use still and silent spells so they will notice you casting.

Well, most of the things that make a rogue a rogue is their skills and luckily wizards get tons of them. So rather than putting them in your wizard skills, just throw them into rogue skills. Put a feat into light armor so you can wear the leathers and you are golden. You wont be as good as an actual rogue at it, but good enough to fake it. Just don't cast anything when anyone is looking and you'll be fine.

Actually if im not mistaken there was a feat that allowed you to hide your spellcasting using bluff.

So go wizard , get the trait so bluff gets an INT mod instead of CHA and make sure this is as high as possible.

The most difficult thing?

Resist the temptation to cast a ohh so useful right now spell when you are under observation / can be heared doing it.

Hiding your spellcasting is quite doable. It's hiding the spells themselves that causes issues.

It might be a better tactic to buff yourself to the gills and then go thieving the old-fashioned way. Or possess or enchant others to do it for you.

Liberty's Edge

Well, Rogue 1/Wizard 3/Arcane Trickster X (doable with Accomplished Sneak Attacker) does a pretty good job of this.

It does, as mentioned, run into the issue of needing to conceal spell-casting, but there may well be options for that in Ultimate Intrigue, and even now there's Cunning Caster. Due to how that works, you might want to go with a Psychic Caster to make it work.

But that, sadly, wouldn't sych up with Arcane Trickster.

So your precise priorities in this matter.

Investigator also definitely deserves a mention, though it doesn't meet the standard definition of full caster. I mean, it's a caster who does Rogue stuff only better.
