I tried looking for the 8th, but if it's there, I'm not sure why I can't find it.
"Our Resource-Rich But Disaster-Prone TMI Territory" is where I place Americans who share more than the rest of us might care to know about their particular leg of the empire. It's all in fun (but seriously, there are parts of America that approaching with an open heart and mind can have...deleterious...results; I know because I've done that and suffered the consequences).

I'm noticing a pattern among the Brits on this thread of saying what town/city they're near as opposed to which village/hamlet they're in. I wonder why that is.

I'm noticing a pattern among the Brits on this thread of saying what town/city they're near as opposed to which village/hamlet they're in. I wonder why that is.
For me, it's because of experience of face-to-face conversations where saying that I live in Wilburton draws blank faces, but saying I live a few miles west of Ely has people nodding in understanding.

You grossly overestimate the likelihood that the percentage of people on the internet who know what you're talking abut will be much greater that way...

Because people would look blank if I said 'Lower Basildon' as it's tiny, but they may have the misfortune to know Reading. Also because England is full of small villages, many of which have the same name, so just the village name doesn't always help.

The reason it seems odd to this American is that, from what I can tell, Lower Basildon is around the same size as the village where my folks live (Putnam Station, Washington County, New York; pop. ~500), but when asked where they live, they always say the name of their tiny little collection of houses and barns, rather than the neighboring "big town" of Ticonderoga, Essex County, New York (pop. ~5,000).
Based on my experiences speaking with small-town folk from the US and the UK, the conversations always seem to go like this:
Stranger: "So where are you from, then?"
American: "Oh, I'm from [name of small town], which is near [name of slightly larger town], sort of by [name of city] in [name of state]."
Stranger: "So, where are you from, then?"
Briton: "Oh, I'm from a small town near [name of city]."
Maybe Americans just like explaining stuff to total strangers more than the British do...

Living somewhere where Humanity and its institutions are mostly good, trustworthy, and competent, but it's the natural world that's constantly plotting to destroy you...would be a change of pace, I'll admit. Europe might still be my first choice, though.
Anyone have anything to say about "Brexit?" I know it's complicated, but I kind of feel like it would be a move in the wrong direction. In a time when Big Business, Big Theocracy, and Big Muscle are trying to force us to believe "these are the End Times, War Is Forever, the Age of Miracles Is Over," the EU, when you really think about it, is nothing short of a big, real, modern-day MIRACLE that screams "Yes We Can" louder than President Obama ever could.
Also, are we quite certain that at least a large percentage of Britons who support Brexit aren't just doing so because it sounds like something that might be good to put on their morning toast? Because I'd heard about how the BNP tried to rebrand themselves using Marmite's official slogan....

Personally, I think that yet again* the British public is being asked to vote on a subject of which we have no real knowledge, and then, instead of informing us, the leaders of the two sides are lying to us, exaggerating and obfuscating.
I'd much rather our elected representatives make decisions on social, economic and defense policy (which this is) for us, since it's their job, rather than shifting the onus onto the uninformed public.
As for my vote, I said at the beginning that I would only vote leave if someone could show me a real, concrete benefit to leaving. They have 10 days left...
*This is in reference to a vote we had a few years back on whether we should change the method for electing MPs. The No campaign won that time, despite one of their main arguments being essentially "AV is too complicated for your simple little brains to comprehend".

Salut! Tell me, I understand most modern French people are very proud of their Revolution and its ideals and accomplishments, but how does France's amphibian minority feel? It would seem that the shift to a republic would have severely deprived you of formerly-rich upward-mobility opportunities, since France no longer has any princesses to kiss you.

True dat. I live about 40 miles from one of my cousins, who is in a village called Kineton. About a third of the way along my route to visit her, I pass a... village called... Kineton.
