RE: New Player: Core or RP

Pathfinder Society

Hi Pathfinders,

I'm a new player who recently bought the humble bundle.

I've been skimming the core & advanced class books to make my first character but realize that if I want to register it, I can register it as a "Core" or RP/regular character through Paizo. I also noticed Pathfinder Society games in my area are listed as core campaign or not.

(1) What is the difference between a Core or RP/regular registered character?

(2) Also, if I am interested in adventuring in a beginner box text or online game, where should I go?

Thank you for the input. Am excited to dive in!

The character type distinctions are used in the Pathfinder Society organized play system. A Core character is created using only options from the Core Rulebook (i.e. no oracles, no traits, etc.) while a regular character is able to draw from any source designated legal for Pathfinder Society. The distinction only matters if you intend to play in Pathfinder Society games; if you're playing a home game with no connection to PFS, go nuts. :)

There are many different ways to get involved in online Pathfinder games. For text-based games, this board is designated for people currently putting Play by Post (PbP) game groups together, while the Gamer Connection board aims to assemble people for face to face games, whether in-person or on a digital platform such as Roll20. Speaking of Roll20, it's also a great way to find games - it has a Looking For Group feature that will let you connect with others who want to play.

Hope this helps, and welcome to Pathfinder!

Core characters still get two traits from the web Traits document.

Until you actually play the character you can switch between Core and RP.

At the top of Pathfinder Society forum page is a link to Player Resources. Go there and download all the Free stuff. The most important one is The Guide to Pathfinder Society Organized Play. This will give you lots of good information and explain what Core and Classic (RP) modes are.

I suggest your first character be Core. There is a lot of options to explore but at first you need to learn how to walk.

Good luck. Ask questions. There are a lot of good people on these boards who can offer sound advise.

I would do RP. Games seem easier to find even in areas that do have core.

Thank you all for the replies and input.

Rennaivx: Thank you greatly for the highly informative post. Your summary of the differences is concise and your links are really helpful. Appreciate it.

lareman: Thanks! I just read about traits last night and this is good to know.

Gary Bush and BigNorseWolf: Thanks for the input. I have to figure out what events in my area that aren’t marked “Core Campaign” are core events. It will be a lot more realistic for me to visit a venue rather than travel further to grab core-only events.

However, I’m thinking I’ll end up setting up a core character for online (chat/skype) play and another character for in person. If I happen to be at a live core game I can add the character to the event.

Thank you all for the helpful input.

Welcome to PFS!

While I'd not recommend you go as crazy as I did, keep in mind you can also create and register multiple characters. You may want to make your -1 CORE and your -2 STANDARD (or vice versa) so that you have the option to play either way at the first table which appeals to you. Until you've played your character as a 2nd level character, you can also change them around (excepting CORE to STANDARD) to see what works for you.

I'd also recommend you reach out to your local community, the PFS boards are not a good representation of what actual PFS play is like (it's generally much better than what is represented here) and they are often a better resource as it is often easier to sit down and discuss things than rely on board postings to explain what may be new concepts.

As a comment about Core and Standard modes, once you play a character in a Standard mode you cannot go back to Core.

As suggested by TimD, you can actually create two characters that are exactly the same, one under the Core rules and the other under the Standard rules. They can even have the same name... the only difference is the PFS number.
