Are you a kobold (or possibly an orc)? Do you hate adventurers?

Then join Gorlaug's Avengers!

Hi everyone, I'm DM Mooshybooshy, and I run homebrew games. This campaign will be run using Dungeon World rules. If you've never played Dungeon World, I strongly encourage you to check it out. I prefer it over Pathfinder (even though I love PF) because DW is far less crunchy and obsessed with minor details. I want theatrics, I want drama, I want adventure, I don't want to waste time calculating a bunch of obscure modifiers from different sources.

This campaign is centered around a group of kobolds that formerly lived in a dormant volcano called Moontower Mountain. At the center of Moontower Mountain was a slumbering black dragon named Gorlaug the Corruptor. The Mountain, as well as all the miles of swampland around it, were his domain, and your tribe were his happy and loyal subjects under his protection. Until the adventurers came.

Drawn by legends of Gorlaug's wealth, a group of powerful heroes invaded the mountain home completely unprovoked! Slaughtering the kobold tribe by the dozens as they leapt to Gorlaug's defense, the adventurers looted and pillaged as much treasure as they could, slaying the dragon in a climactic battle that destroyed the very mountaintop in a fiery eruption.

This eruption made Krakkatoa look like a fireworks display. It put Mt. St. Helens to shame. Ash and smoke still choke the sky for miles around, and the swamplands surrounding the mountain have been completely desolated.

My current party, consisting of Smoog the Blue-Scale Tinkerer, Thunk the Red-Scale Barbarian, Sees-Death, the Black-Scale Bard, and Hegh, the White-Scaled Dragon Mage, have been traveling together for over a week since the desolation of their home. They have escaped Moontower Mountain's destruction and are seeking their vengeance on the adventurers that killed their Dragon, Gorlaug. The gameplay thread starts here.

Along the way, a dragon, the scion of Thunk's patron dragon, has hatched, and is now being cared for by the party. Her name is Tanard, the End of All Paths, in Dragontongue.

At this point in the campaign, my kobolds have already killed one of the adventurers that killed their dragon - a necromancer. They are hunting another adventurer, a Dwarf barbarian king.

If you'd like to join, you have some options. You could come up with a character concept that the kobolds could encounter along the way, and find a way to join them somehow. You could be a kobold from Moontower Mountain, and we could just pretend you were there the whole time. Or you could play an orc.

The kobolds, you see, recently fought with a group of orc slavers that they encountered along the road leading south to the Barbarian King's domain. They gave the main group of slavers the slip, and found the slavers' camp, where they encountered a lone sentry and subdued him. Using Sees-Death's bardic magic, they coerced the orc into serving them. The orc has no name currently, but could easily be turned from a hireling into a PC.

Rules:
Here's the skinny on how Dungeon World works.

1) The wiki is here. The "Playing the Game" section is very useful to read for beginners.

2) Everything revolves around 2d6. To do anything that requires a roll, you choose which of your stats makes the most sense for what you're trying to do, add that modifier to 2d6, and away you go.

If you roll a 10+, you succeed! You successfully attack and deal your damage, or you avoid an enemy attack, or you trick someone, or you cast a spell - whatever!

If you roll 7-9, partial success. You achieved what you set out to do, mostly, but I as the DM can add a messy complication.

If you roll a 6 or below, you gain an XP, and you fail at what you were trying to do.

Critical successes or failures for rolling double 6s or snake-eyes is also a thing.

3) The DM doesn't roll anything. If I want to do something, I do it, and it's on the players to respond. That being said, it's the DM's role in Dungeon World to be a fan of the players, so it's my job to make the combat and story exciting for you all.

4) There's no kobold racial moves offered for the classes listed in the SRD. Since racial moves are determined by class as well as race, let me know what class you'd like to play and we'll work together to homebrew a racial move that makes sense for kobolds. You can feel free to use kobold lore from Golarian regarding scale color to inform your character in my world.

I also offer alternative classes beyond what are offered in the SRD, though I do recommend giving the base classes a shot if you've never tried the system. They're great. One exception - if you want to play a Cleric, let me know and I'll get you the Priest playbook instead. It's more flexible and fun.

List of Classes:
Arcane Duelist
Barbarian (claimed)
Bard (claimed)
Cleric (see: Priest)
Druid
Fighter
Paladin
Ranger

Alternative Classes

This campaign has been a blast so far. Come get your evil on!

Thunk need friend to help thump!

This sounds like a blast. I would be interested in participating as a Ranger.

DungeonWorld is a new system to me but sounds easy to learn. If you are willing to take on a new inexperienced player I think I would enjoy this campaign.

I can post at least once a day most days.

Dungeon World is very easy to learn. It's basically 2d6+the relevant stat mod for most rolls. The most important thing to remember is fulfilling your Bonds with other PCs and we can take care of that during character creation.

Looking forward to seeing the ranger you put forward :)

DM, thanks for the encouragement. Here is my kobold ranger for your review. Let me know if I am off on anything.

I added the Green Scaled Acid Resistance for my Race bonus. Let me know if I should remove that.

I also took 2 guesses on my bonds, although in the story I have probably not met the other PC's yet so maybe I should leave those blank?

Haha, I love that your animal companion's a particularly ferocious rat named Meep.

And I like your story. You were just out in the marshes when the mountain erupted, huh? I imagine you would have understood how Pork, our druid, would have felt when the marshlands were destroyed by choking smoke, ash, and lava from the eruption.

Pork was so heartbroken it actually drove his alignment further evil. It was very cool. Unfortunately he had to drop out of the campaign because of real-life reasons.

Would you like to hand-wave your backstory such that you joined up with the party much earlier? I think that makes more sense than just randomly finding you in the wild, since the kobolds have actually been traveling for some time now away from Moontower Mountain.

In terms of your racial, I think the best way to hack your idea into Dungeon World terms would be conditional armor; take 1 armor vs damage from nature-y and acidic sources. Hit point totals are pretty low and stay low in Dungeon World, so it doesn't take much armor to become very difficult to kill. Hence why armor is so hard to get higher.

Kibra is definitely heart broken and confused about the whole thing. He really does not have the whole picture together yet. Meep it turns out was a rat Kibra trapped on one of his first expeditions into the swamp. Kibra saw something special in the creature and developed a bond with him, when Kibra asked for his name he replied "Meep".

If you would rather me have been a follower the whole time we can make that work. I would be concerned about not knowing what has happened. (I guess I should go read the whole gameplay forum to catch up)

An alternative option might be that I was captured by the orc slavers and have been rescued by the group. Or I have been traveling the wilds this whole time and I bump into your group and desire their companionship. This would explain my low level character maybe.

I'll make that adjustment to my racial.

Let me know how to proceed and I'll work with it.

Having been among the slaves that the group just rescued could be a great "in," and it'd make sense - a lost, wandering solo kobold in the wild? Definitely slaver fodder - at least at the time, because you were so disoriented from the eruption. Under normal circumstances you would be okay in the wild solo, as a ranger.

They rescued you when they released the other slaves, and you joined up with them.

You could have known any of the kobolds from your past life at Moontower Mountain, except not Thunk - he showed up after the eruption, so this would be your first time meeting the red kobold. He's from a distant land under a different dragon that was also killed by this adventuring group.

Sounds great.

Anything else I need to tweak or develop?

Mmmm...no, not for now. But I would encourage you to come up with all sorts of crazy things that happened to you between now and when the Mountain erupted.

The characters in the party are level 5, and for every good story you come up with to share with the party for what happened to you in the interim, you gain another level (up to level 4).

Gameplay thread is here. Go on and introduce yourself, after reading at least a few pages back to give yourself context. :)

Well. Didn't expect to find this.

I've been following this game and others you've been involved in daily for a while now, and definitely been greatly enjoying what I'm seeing. I certainly think it'd be fun to join in here. I have a slight problem though, in that I have next to no clue what I'm doing regarding playing games like these, and in using these forums in general. Not sure what I can take from some short-lived haphazard stints as a GM, but I get the distinct feeling of "Not much."

I guessed it was worth at least investigating though. I figured a game you had a hand in was worth an attempt not to be so withdrawn. If you're willing and capable of dealing with an awkward new player that has happily been rifling through assorted materials regarding these sorts of games, but doesn't really have any proper experience, let me know. I can promise I'll try, but not what that looks like!

If it turns out that I can't join for whatever reason, it's no problem either. At the very least, I hope to see more delicious antics from you and your players. To refer to another game, I can't wait for another moment like the mino-taunting. Or to refer to this one: Thunk in general. Frickin' Judo Crab.

Haha, excellent. Glad that others have been enjoying the story so far. I'm actually really flattered that you've been enjoying the other games that I'm a part of as well.

Experience is NO REQUIREMENT. Dungeon World is incredibly rules-light and narrative-heavy. If you like describing the cool s!&# your character does and the cool actions he/she takes, I can handle the niggling mechanics as DM. Your post could be something like, "I take a running leap and somersault over the orc, pivoting to backstab him on the way down."

I as the DM would then respond, "Sounds awesome. Give me a defy danger roll with your Dex mod to see how well your somersault went, and then roll your knife's damage to the orc." You would then roll 2d6+1 or 2 or 0 or whatever your Dex mod was, and roll your damage. Then the game just continues on. It's very easy to get into.

Infernal, I've played quite a bit of play by post DW from both player and GM side and the beauty is that as a player you just describe what you do. You don't need to really worry about the rules too much because the rules follow the fiction. As Mooshy said, it is his job to translate your desires into mechanics. However as you've probably seen, the players often do this translation and do the rolls up front to move things along. You'll get there.

If you want to get a better idea of how DW works, I highly recommend the guide found at: http://apocalypse-world.com/forums/index.php?topic=4996.0

TLDR: Join us, we have dwarf jerky.

We don't have dwarf jerky yet Hegh, don't misrepresent us!

You're on your way to GET dwarf jerky.

We definitely HAD dwarf jerky. Poor Agatha.

...I love you guys, I really do. I see Mooshy's post, I start feeling giddy - and THEN I see the words "Experience is NO REQUIREMENT." Also, dwarf jerky. Why didn't you save me someeeeee

I think you've tempted me enough. Alright, what do I need to do, and what's best practice once I get into things? Any recommendations as to which class to take up? I already know I'd rather not use anything past kobolds have, so that cuts out Druid, Skirmisher, Shaman, and Immolator. And Ranger's been nabbed in this thread, so that helps me narrow it down too. Anything to say, Mooshy, Dragonkeeper?

Juuuuust gotta warn you that brevity is not generally a strong suit of mine. Same goes with anything remotely classifiable as people-y stuff. Gotta work on those.

If you want a great race/class combo that I'm surprised hasn't been explored yet in my campaign, I'd say take a hard look at the Thief class. Everything about a kobold's identity matches pretty squarely with being a thief, imo, even down to trap making and disabling.

Heh. Hey Frogfoot. =)

I'll put something together, if you'll have me. ;-)

(Ooo! No one's claimed Necromancer??!?!?!?!!!?!?!???! Can I? Huh? Huh? Can I? Hmmmm? Huh? Huh? How 'bout it? =)

Hey Atlas, I love necromancers, so go for it!

Hi there so I'd love to be a Channeler on here but I'm completely new to this (or any) forum play, not as new to DW (playing in the pbp on /r/dungeonworldpbp atm as well). So let me know how to get started and I'd gladly join.

A thief sounds good. Hell, it was what I was leaning to - admittedly due to it amusing me to pick it after all my lurking, but I'm happy to have some better reasoning. Next job, find a good resource on kobolds so I don't step on anyone's tail.

How do I sort myself out an alias? And for that matter, can I get some name help over here? I have never been able to do names for the life of me, let alone kobold ones.

This sounds like fun. I am unfamiliar with DW, but would be willing to give it a try. 1) Would you allow an Immolator, and 2) Would you be open to something like the dragonwrought and dragon wings feats from the 3.5 races of the dragon?

The idea is a kobold that has a stronger draconic heritage than usual, and, eventually, develops wings and, eventually, the ability to fly.

EDIT: How many people are you looking at bringing on?

EDIT 2, son of EDIT: After finding and reading some of the other classes on the second list, I would also be totally down with a Shaman.

I think I've figured it out. Does everything seem to be in order? I'm still nervous admittedly, but I want to try and do this at least. At worst, I can drop out and go back to watching things unfold if necessary. But there's going to be a lot of fun stuff going on here. And I'd prefer to get at least ONE body while I'm on screen.

Alright!

Character submission for Atlas2112.

Hehe. We all knew this was coming. =)

When do we start?

It's sort of funny, because I was thinking about reusing my DW Gobbo (Talks-to-Trees) profile. But I ultimately decided I wasn't really up for an evil campaign (and 'Oblivious-Evil' is sort of hard to pull off. Especially with Kobolds. :P)

Everyone who is interested, post in the discussion thread here. I posted my idea for how to add you guys to the story, and I'd like your input.

So here's the character submission of Firzenick.

A tiefling, eh? What could motivate a tiefling to join up with a bunch of kobolds?

Oadir works with the shadows, Greas operates in the shadows. Unfortunately Oadir, while smart, was not wise enough to realise Greas was attempting *not* to be noticed when he snuck away into the shadows. Revealing both himself and Greas, he feels he has to make up for his mistake.

Oadir doesn't have anyone anymore, not since his brethren were slain, probably because they looked too monstrous or something, while he was communing with the shadows out of sight.

(Will that do for now?)
