First Look at Pathfinder Remastered Covers

Thursday, April 27, 2023

This morning, at the annual GAMA EXPO game industry trade show, Paizo publisher Erik Mona unveiled the sketches of the just-announced Pathfinder Player Core and Pathfinder GM Core hardcovers to hobby game retailers and distributors. We will update the product pages for the new books when the final full-color pieces arrive in the coming weeks, but Pathfinder cover artist Wayne Reynolds’s illustrations have us so excited we couldn’t wait to show them off to you in all their glory.

Receiving a new cover sketch from Wayne is one of the true highlights of life behind the scenes at Paizo. Whenever they arrive, the creative staff gathers around to marvel at their beauty and pick out all the fun little details Wayne always adds above and beyond the simple descriptions we provide him. Wayne Reynolds has been one of the most important contributors to Pathfinder since the very beginning, and it’s a pity that his pencil sketches are not often seen outside the building.

So, we decided to change that this time around—not just by showing off his sketches here on the blog, but also on your own game tables.

Pathfinder Second Edition Remaster Player Core Pathfinder Second Edition GM Core Sketch Cover

For the first time, we’re bringing Wayne’s sketches to your game table with the Pathfinder Second Edition Remaster Project. This November, in addition to the standard fully painted covers for the Pathfinder Player Core and Pathfinder GM Core, we’ll also be offering unique Sketch Cover editions of the rulebooks, only with a catch.

For the first four months of their release, Pathfinder Sketch Cover versions of the new core rulebooks will be available EXCLUSIVELY at hobby retailers worldwide. We will not be offering these editions to online or bookstore retailers, ever! We also do not intend to reprint these editions beyond our modest initial print run. We’ll retain a small number to sell on paizo.com after the 120-day exclusivity period for folks who do not have access to a local game store, but these special editions are intended to support our local game store partners who have been such a big part of Pathfinder’s success since the very beginning. We urge you to communicate your interest in these special books to your local store, so that they can be sure to stock appropriately.

Lastly, take another look at those cover sketches. Each debuts a brand new type of official Pathfinder dragon that will appear in March 2024’s Pathfinder Monster Core. Wayne developed the dragons from concept art by Paizo’s very own in-house concept artist, Kent Hamilton.

Very soon, we’ll return here to show off some of Kent’s preliminary dragon concept designs and learn a bit more about Pathfinder’s new core dragons!

Q: Will the Pathfinder Second Edition Remaster books be part of my ongoing Pathfinder Rulebooks subscription?

A: Pathfinder Second Edition Remaster books will be included in ongoing Pathfinder Rulebooks subscriptions. We are currently working on a method whereby existing subscribers will have the opportunity to “opt out” of these volumes if they wish and will provide additional details as we get closer to the release of the first two volumes.

Q: Will the sketch-covers include some form of PDF redemption since they're only available in-store?

A: No, PDFs will be sold separately.

On-Topic: I love this art, and hope you publish an adult coloring book with it as Sebastian Hirsch suggested. I also am glad that you are providing a carrot for in person game stores with this edition.

Off-Topic: Captain Relyk, I think that you could benefit from reading a thread that I created a while ago on forum communication: How we can disagree.

In particular, I want to direct your attention to the second toolbox item, on increasing signal-to-noise ratio. Many of the things you point out are useful, but your message is getting lost in the noise of your own repeated posts. They would have much more impact if you posted your opinion once (or maybe a second time for a clarification) rather than repeating it.

I appreciate your passion and energy, so let's help you direct them in a manner that will be more sustainable and effective.

Yours,

These are beautiful and I cannot wait to get my hands on them. While I'm not too stoked on buying books all over again just a few years into the edition, I get it. Less of the OGL and more of ORC is a good thing.

The contents of the books are going to be part of the rulebook subscriptions though. Special cover version is not.

The devs themselves may not read these forums very closely. But the information does get back to them. They listen a lot more than they post. It does just take a long time to make changes (as in - measured in years, not months or weeks). Just note the date on my request thread and realize that the changes to the class are still over 6 months away from being published.

You didn't screw anything up, you got excited about a topic and mentioned it. You've now both expressed both ideas. This is not a burden or duty you need to put on yourself. By expressing a concerm you've done your part. If other people agree they will mention it as well, in the approrptiate times and places. Taken initative is good, but so is looking at what people say, listening, and moving forward. Take a deep breath and accept youve done your part for now. You don't need to make up for any past mistakes you think you've made here.

I know it's probably getting repetitive at this point, but just to put it all to rest. There are going to be 3 Versions of these Remaster Books, yeah?

The Regular Covers: Available through the Online Store, The Subscription Service, and in LGS's.

The Special Edition (Leather-bound) Covers: Available through the Online Store, The Special Edition Subscription Service, and in LGS's.

And these Sketch Special Editions: Primarily Available in LGS's, some might be sold online while supplies last, but unavailable in any Subscription Service.

Is that correct?

Dancing Wind has taken your second point, for the first, the PDF will be purchasable seperately, and for cheaper than the book, so I would recommend you get the sketch cover versions from your LGS and use the planned option to skip the subscription copies and just buy the PDFs when available in November.

Minor request: Can we not have the dragon on the cover of the Player Core be a Red Dragon this time? It would make it easier for new players who have not seen the core rulebooks be able to differentiate between first and second edition a little easier.

Conversely, having that familiarity alerts people that this is the Pathfinder Player’s Guide.

From what was said by Luis Loza in one of the PF2ER threads, the dragon on the cover of Player Core 1 will be the new Diabolic Dragon, and the one on the cover of GM Core will be the new Mirage Dragon.

Nice! I actually hope the sketch covers remain exclusive to the four core books and they are not repeated past them. It will make the four core books feel extra special.

Could any of the new dragons out-wholesome the lovable brass boi? Or out-malice the cruel red?

1) Yes to both, I suspect and hope.

2) The existing dragons in 2nd edition aren't vanishing from the game. You can still use them in your games in the remastered rules. And we'll continue to have them play roles in Golarion in remastered adventures... but that's a "later and down the line" goal for us. We want to put some of our new dragons front and center in the Monster Core to build some of our own scaly friends and foes!

I have a few draconic themed characters in PFS, a white dragon kobold, a gold dragon dragon disciple sorcerer, and a copper dragon totem half orc barbarian. Will there be substantial changes to these classes with the rework of the dracos?

First, you can still choose to use the existing rules for them, if it becomes an issue. However, ultimately, I don't think the changes are going to be drastic. I bet they're going to add more dragons to the lists for those characters so it isn't so clearly "chromatic vs metallic". At the very least, there should be very similar options you could easily reflavor if it came to it.

Probably. I may just have some residual saltyness that the writers raised some actual redemption potential with Xanderghul, only to canonically roast his soul upon a spit in the last volume, while Belimarius, who by her attitude alone is much more likely to get killed by player characters, gets to canonically run Edasseril.
Or maybe the plans I've got for Xanderghul kinda needed things to happen they way they did in "Return of the Runelords," and the choices we made in canonizing that Adventure Path are intentional and, maybe, just maybe, setting up something for the future?

This is awesome and reminds me that AP 200 will be a trip down nostalgia lane IIRC.

Quick follow-up: If I have the Pathfinder Special Edition Rulebook subscription, will these sketch covers be included in my subscription? If so, would I need to wait until the FLGS exclusivity period is over and they're available on paizo.com to ship as part of the SE subscription?

Also: are these in addition to the existing special edition versions of the rulebooks or replacing them?

He wouldn't be the first Pathfinder villain for whom death was all a part of the plan, nor would he be the first to be killed and then come back. And isn't it convenient that the person who knows him best would be all too willing to play ball?

But to keep this somewhat on topic: those sketch covers look amazing!

Anyone have any stores they recommend that would sell these sketch versions? Any that would also ship somewhere? I am overseas, active-duty, and not near a "local game store," but would absolutely love to have the sketch-versions of the core books.

Art is (obviously) subjective, but I've never cared for the style of Mr. Reynold's work. Going back as far as the 3E days, it struck me as trying too hard to be xXxtreme!1! -- to the point of being comical. Swords that would weight 100lbs, silly pointy bits everywhere, etc. (And yes, I realize this puts me in a tiny minority in the Pathfinder world, but so be it.)

However, I really like the look of the "sketch" covers, to the point where I think they look better than any of his finished work. I like them so much I'm actually tempted to seek out this version of Player Core, when otherwise I'd just buy it in PDF.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Superscriber

Ah man. I want those sketch covers but I'm a subscriber so I'd be getting the color ones - and if I cancel that to go buy the sketch instead I'd have to come back and buy the PDFs individually.

Got some thinking to do on that.

Didn't see this questioned asked:

Did you get the travel guide? They made his art canon style in certain areas some just like to wear lots of buckles straps and doodads. inception.

I think its funny that artists are seeing more value from unfinished works than finished ones! You can take them to cons, have him hand color and sign for even more value!

When do the solicitations for the Sketch versions go out?

I want to hit up my LGS to have them order copies for me but I'm not sure how far before the November release date I need to talk to them.
