Atheists in Hell's Vengeance?

Hell's Vengeance

I've been thinking about playing a Rahadoumi character for some time now, and on the surface and Evil campaign seems like an interesting opportunity for a pragmatic nihilist type, but I'm concerned because I don't know much about the overall campaign, and how closely one would end up working with Asmodeus and his church. Does one have to bend knee to Hell to work in this AP, or can we simply take their money?

Disclaimer: I haven't read either the player's guide (hasn't been released yet) nor the first part, as I'm not an subscriber.

From my past experience with running APs, they are normally flexible and the set up is brought enough so you can play a wide variety of PCs. I think James Jacobs posted somewhere previously that you would be able to play a wide range of evil PCs, not only LE, and that you can even worship any evil deity.

I'll go out on a limb and say that if you are able to worship most evil deities in this campaign, you should be able to run as an evil atheist PC.

Keep in mind that the definition of atheism in Golarion is vastly different, than in our world, so maybe your PC is just in it for the rewards (which sounds a bit shallow, but without more information it's hard to come up with more) or the PC is a Thrune loyalist or aspiring to join a Hellknight Order or etc.

A definite answer can only given when all Parts have been released, but I have enough trust in the developers have created an AP with tons of possibilities and not only for Asmodeus worshippers.

No, as per known info so far you don't need to swear loyalty to Hell. However...

AP Plot:
As per later APs' plot summaries, you end up signing mind-bounding contracts that bind you to House Thrune, and later directly to Abigail Thrune herself.

However, with what the first adventure presents, simple mercenary greed should be enough to get you onboard. Long-term... harder to call.

But Thrune is not the Church of Asmodeus, and vice-versa. Think you'd have some flex if your character focused on "I work for these guys and I get shiny things."

I was thinking of a foreign mercenary type. Cheliax and Rahadoum are political rivals, as I recall, so his willingness to work for Chelaxians would imply a lack of loyalty to his home state.

Dark Archive

I would say that it really depends on how forceful he is in his belief because if you are from Rahadoum and/or the the pure legion I don't think he would work with divine casters. But if he is just atheist and willing to work with/for divine stuff it will work fine
