I was browsing on the message boards when I saw a thread with a weird title in the tab off to the side. The title was some letters in another language then the name of what appeared to be a website. I thought it was spam and flagged it. Pretty soon more threads like that started popping up, under "burner" accounts. Just wanted to alert you

It's a conspiracy then! I wonder what the strange website name is?

I wonder if they've returned having got cleverer or if the paizo site somehow 'rolled back' to a previous iteration and they've been there all along? (I'm hoping for the latter).

Shadow Lodge

Lol there is like 2 and a half pages of that spam

Which episode of Spam Wars are we on, "A New Hope?", "The Spammers Strike Back", or was it "Return of the Spammers"?

*Edit: They seem to so far be only on the General Discussion, nice of them to be considerate and keep their spam in one place

I can just imagine the state the site will be in if the mods are going to be gone for a whole three day weekend.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

They'll drop in and tidy things up at some point, based on past experience. Not a fun way to spend a weekend. :(

I'm noticing a few recognizable characters, but for the most part these spammers post in korean, correct? Wouldn't it help to just block non alpha-numeric characters besides a few?

Liberty's Edge

Paizo General discussion has been spammed for almost 8 hours now. That makes nearly 7 pages of spam. I will flag the most recent ones in hope that the defenses take them down first ;-)

Looks like the mighty banhammer +5 of spam bane might need a new handle.

They may take our time, but they will never take... our forums!

Wow, really? Based on some of the title (which I will not repeat to avoid helping them), I can only imagine they're taunting us. :( And a flagging I go!

Edit: I had to go back 9 pages to find the first regular post. At the rate they're posting, it'll soon be more. >:(

I've been shooting at 12 already in rapid succession.

To your flak cannons, my friends, take em down!!!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I've started flagging. I'm also keeping my opinion of this return to myself. I think I'd even embarrass/offend Deadpool!

Babaji tried to warn of what was to come, but we were too busy trying for doctor love spell to notice.

It appears that they stopped using burner accounts and they keep posting under one account:crunchycrunchy441

I just squashed a bunch of crunchycrunchy posts, who must be clones, because they are numbered. Anyway, clone crunching I went. I will check back occasionally to see if they arise again.

It appears the spammers have stopped. Last spam post was hours ago.

I've cleaned out all the backlog of spam, we're looking at the Spam Laser now to see why it didn't trigger on them. We'll keep an eye on the boards till the harsh laser of vindication is once more operating at full power :).

Problem is that this would hurt PbPs that actually need weird characters for posts in other languages.

I'll go back to my recommendation of requiring that the first 3 posts of any new account be moderated. It would be only a small inconvenience for new users, but it would really cramp the spammers hard since they only post 2 times on each account, and I think that they would have a hard time coming up with 3 legitimate posts to get past this requirement anyway.

Honestly, I've almost complete tuned out the spammers. They're just white noise now.

It's annoying when they drive threads I'm interested in off the front page, so I don't notice new posts.

Yeah, but on the flip side, there are some threads I hate more than I hate the spam. Give me love magic specialists over "alignment experts" any day of the week.

True

The spam laser doesn't block content just because it uses foreign characters, the heuristic is much more complex than that.

The Goblins have been instructed that playing with the Spam Laser represents a Poor Life Choice (and, more importantly, a Final Life Choice). Greasy fingerprints have been removed from the focusing lens and the Laser is once more operating at full power. We'll be watching things a bit more closely for a few days, but we are cautiously optimistic.

Since moderation would put a strain on Paizo employees, perhaps a first 3 posts captcha.
