Stupid decisions that saved the party.

Sovereign Court

My character was an elven rogue. We were at the base of an 80foot tall cliff and my character had just climbed on top of it in order to destroy a magical weapon that was going to flood the entire region. That was the moment that the BBEG chose to appear with his retinue and engage the rest of the party in conversation, oblivious that my character was on top of the cliff, dismantling the weapon. And that was the moment the party decided to engage him in combat. And they did. And he was prooving too much for the party.
So what do I do? I have my character jump off the cliff straight on top of the BBEG and to hit him with my sword, sneak attack damage and falling damage. Falling damage took me into the negatives immediately, but the combined damage from my sneak attack and fall triggered a massive damage fortitude save which the BBEG failed. His cronies ran away, demoralozed.
So stupid decision, yes, saved the party.

In old AD&D: I was an anti-paladin with an assassin sidekick. We got captured by some thugs in the dungeon, and they tied me up in a throne we had encountered earlier in our explorations and determined had triggers for traps located on it.

I thought: "Heck! I get great bonuses to my saves!" So I pressed the button that released poison gas. My buddy and I both saved; thugs didn't. :)

At the time, my friend was like: "Are you crazy! That could have killed us!"

I just smiled. "Well, I had good chances to survive. Besides, I'm chaotic evil. If I failed - I go see my patron that much sooner."
