Puff the magic dragon lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honali
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff.

Hello there friends.

Allow me to first thank you for stopping by and taking a look around.

*sips tea*

You know, one could say the song "Puff the Magic Dragon" parallels Dragon's Demand plot in a strange English Lit 101 Discussion kinda way. Or when you are drunk at 3am. Both methods of discussion are equally deep and meaningful.

*pets cat*

Ahh yes, the game. I am proposing running the module Dragon's Demand. The game will start at level 1 and should end at around level 7. If everybody is up for it, I may continue to run adventures for the selected party after level 7.

But first, I will run a mini-encounter to see how the chemistry of the party works, and how I like the characters of the party. If I don't think the composition will work out, I'll thank everybody for their time and stop the game. Honestly, how many times have you been on a second date with somebody and wished you didn't ask for the 3rd. Now, 10 years later, you are married with 4 kids on an alpaca farm. But enough about me ...

*hammers nail*

General Outline of the Campaign:
This module is very basic in its scope. I believe it was designed for those new to Pathfinder but for a grand adventure. The entire adventure takes place in the Verduran Forest were Taldor, Andoran & Galt meet. If you are looking for a complex, revolutionary game, this one is not for you. You are adventurers with good intentions protecting the weak from forces of evil. And looting their stuff.

Because most encounters are not that difficult, I have placed so many restrictions on character creation. I don't want to have to get into an arms race with encounter modification. If I wanted to do that I would craft my own game instead of being lazy and using a module. Besides, it reduces the chance of DM fatigue which is the major leading cause of PbP game failure.

This adventure has a very good mixture of dungeon crawling and role-playing opportunities. I will also strive to make this a "living game" as choices made may affect later options.

Now on to the important stuff, character creation:

I will be using Vintage Pathfinder Creation Guidelines with personal modifications. This means anything from 2013 and before. Third Party material will be on a case by case with same restrictions.

* 15 point buy.
The adventure was designed for 4 characters with a 15 point buy. I do reserve the right to increase the point buy after character selection if less then 6 characters are selected. (only 4 PCs: 20 points, 5 PCs: 18 points).

* Classes: All that fulfill the guidelines above except for Gunslingers. I probably won't select cheesy summoners either. Divine spell casting characters need to worship a god. Those considering a Paladin, PM me before posting your character.

* Hit Points & XP: Start with max at first level then (1/2 class HD +1) every level there after. We will be using XP at the medium advancement level.

* Races: All Core. Outside of Core, only 1 of the following races maybe selected. The reason I selected the following races is due to the theme of the game and geological location: Changeling, Ratfolk, Samsarans & Aasimars. Only the default Aasimar will be allowed without alignment restrictions. All heritages of Aasimars will need to follow their typical alignment as suggested.

Note: Alternate racial traits, racial archetypes, racial evolutions, racial feats, and racial spells are only available for characters of the associated race.

* Traits: Two are allowed. If you want a third for a Drawback, that would be fine. However I will randomly roll to see what the Drawback is after your character is created and selected.

* Alignment: Any.

But ...:
Only 1 Evil character maybe selected to join. That Player will be heavily vetted before being selected. Also if I select a Paladin, I will not be selecting an Evil PC.

In literature and in other games, one evil character sometimes provides an interesting insight and new dimension to the story. But I don't want total discord that ruins the game for everybody.

Starting Funds:

NOTHING! Absolutely Nothing! How easy is that?
Honestly, your character will start with magic items that I will provide. From the mini-encounter you'll procure funds to equip your character.

Backstory:

Going to be honest, Backstory won't really matter for this module. If there is something I can gleen from it to personalize the adventure a bit, I will. Otherwise, if you want to have a story to use as a touchstone for motivation or character decisions, that would be fine. Who am I to stop you from writing a fictional biography about your fictional character in this fictional adventure about a real dragon? But I always enjoy reading a good backstory in the morning with my tea and crumpets.

FAQ:

What about item creation feats?
This adventure will have some downtime to craft items if you wish, but not much.

Are you sure I can't play a 25 point buy, kobold?
Yes I am sure. No, you cannot.

What are posting requirements?
Daily posting please. I sometimes can post multiple times per day. I reserve the right to either bot your character or just skip them if you don't post in combat over a 24-48 hour time span. If we stay on task, this adventure can be completed within 6 to 18 months.

Can we get PFS credit for this?
Yes, if at least 3 members of the party are PFS members and want credit for it that would be fine. The module must be ran to completion before credit can be given.

What are you thoughts on Take 10?
I'm a bit more limited on Take 10. I have my reasons for each skill on what I allow Take 10 on and what I don't. If you are selected and want to discuss it, we can do it then.

How do you run encounters?
I perform group Initiative. I'll roll for the party, then the bad guys. Who ever goes before the bad guys, go. Then bad guys go. Then the entire party can go. Actions occur in order of postings and I try to kill your characters. This makes it easier for everybody on PbP.

What Mapping system will you be using?
I will be using Google drive. If the combat is simple enough, I reserve the right to just wing it in text. Honestly, do you need a map for 2 kobolds?

How long is recruitment?
I'll leave it open for a couple weeks. But I reserve the right to close it if I see the members of the party I want to run. Honestly, how many times have you seen the last guy who submits a character before a deadline get in?

I think that is everything. If not, please ask.

Desna's Blessing to you all.

Color me still interested....

Spoiler:
paladin or witch....

Same here! Going with a Polearm Master Fighter. Shall finish what isn't done and post here as her.

Liberty's Edge

<- Interested

This Knife Master (Rogue Arch) is built with 20 points, but I'll turn my 16 strength into 14 if needed.

I also got myself standard equipment which I'll easily delete if selected, but I ask the you Mr. Nebten to consider the eight-arms part of the character which involves him having 8 daggers on him at all times. Just a reason for the daggers to not be with him is good enough for me.

Please note that this would be my first PbP game outside my group of friends, so if I ever misunderstand something about guidelines or ignore some game rule (we have house rules), please be patient with me.

Dark Archive

Interested! I will have a frost mage up this evening.

Sovereign Court

I have this Char, a Dwarven Stonelord from a previous campaign for WoTR.
15 point buy.
Goron Boulderstep
He's here because people needed help but also because he needs Funds in order to go to Mendev.

Also interested in PFS Credit.

Definitely interested! Plus, I actually like lower point buy games on occasion. I would like the PFS chronicle sheets.

I will have to look and see which of my books was published 2013 or earlier, but it should be most of them.

I guess I'm thinking a divine something (but not paladin).

Looks like:
CRB, APG, ARG, UCo, UCa, UM, UE, Animal Archive, Blood of Angels, Adventure's Armory, Inner Sea Magic, Inner Sea Campaign, and PFS Field Guide.
are allowed from what I own.

Hmm... does Dragon's Demand have a player's guide?

Double hmm... I haven't had an opportunity to play either a Changeling or Ratfolk before.

I do believe I am done with the crunch on this character. I shall have some fluff up in a bit but since so that you can have something to read with your tea and crumpets! ^_^

Anyone interested in doing siblings with matching teamwork feats?

I guess a pair of siblings can come out all sorts of ways....
Half-elf, half-orc, changling??????

I really don't care. I've been wanting to do a teamwork team for quite a while.

There are teamwork feats that work well for sneaking, melee, archers, even casters (though they aren't as good).

Dark Archive

*cries quietly* well, still interested. I'll tryout on a ratfolk alchemist :)

The Exchange

Here is the draft :)

So, alchemist relies almost exclusively on his mutagen and alchemy... So would I start with those pre-made or will I have to wait?

Also I'm planning on going master chymist, if that's okay :)
the alter ego would be true neutral

Oh btw Nebten, are you using hero points?

I'd like to submit Ollom Stoneforge for consideration.

Dwarven Ranger (Skirmisher). He'll be taking the thrown weapon (throwing ax) weapon style. But he has no problem getting into thick of things either.

Thanks!

I'd also be willing. I could change one of her traits to Kin Guardian.

The Exchange

Okay, I'm mostly done. If anything needs changed or there is something that will help, please notify me.

Here is fluff

appearance/backstory:
Gimpy is a shorter than usual ratfolk, standing at only 3'6", he was teased and called Gimpy. The name stuck after a while, and he bagan using it as his real name. He became fascinated with chemistry at the age of 6, and strived hard to create new flavored versions of water. Eventually, a master alchemist saw his talent and took him in as an apprentice.
He became skilled at finding the best parts of everyday plants to use in alchemy. Once he became of age, he set out to find adventure and find new ingredients and extracts

dotty dotty

I'll see what I can come up with; another half-orc, probably …

yes I count three possible siblings....one human, (I am looking at half orc paladin) and another one....that's a nice trait Kale!

There is no Player's Guide for Dragon's Demand, even though you think there would be. I was thinking about writing one up, but then the couch started calling my name. Was there something specific you wanted to know that Player's Guide normally translate or just asking?

As for Hero Points, I dunno. Let me read over them and think about it. Besides the UC, do they come up in any other book?

If I use an variant rules, I'll make sure to inform the party before implementing them. (Got in trouble last time when I didn't).

Oh a couple more things I forgot:

Those classes that have animal companions, familiars, etc, you will not have them at the start but will be able to obtain them after the initial encounter. Also, classes that have Large mounts won't be too happy.

Man, if I split up a imaginary family of siblings, its going to feel like that time Child Protective Services came over on Christmas when I was a kid.

Carry on.

Sorry to bother you, but I never got the answer to this...

Oh, and I'm starting with an outfit:)
Unless we're on a slave ship, I'm assuming we at least have clothes

Nebten wrote:

Usually just campaign specific traits or appropriate deities.

Nebten wrote:

Nope. Some GM's like them and some do not. Some will use the basic hero points; but without any of the feats, spells, or magic items. I often use them when I am GM, since it leaves me a little more free to be lethal and the players still have a "get out of death free" card.

Ooh good ideas. Let's say we had a Dad that really got around. So we have a human, a half orc, and I will take either a half elf or changeling.

So we have a melee human fighter. Fighter is a good choice for teamwork feats because you get some many other free feats to make the combat style work well. Were you planning on a melee or ranged paladin?

We can all take the kin guardian trait. Then come up with a list of good teamwork feats.

If I could make a suggestion? A ranged unit, ranged melee, and a sword and board would work really well.

Sword and board in front, Polearm just behind, and ranged unit just behind her.

Dark Archive

There are no module specific traits and I'm not going through all of them to say which ones are best suited for the campaign.

Appropriate Deities: Abadar, Aroden, Erastil, Gozreh & Shelyn.

Gimpy/Will, I'm not going to select you. Our play styles don't mesh well together. Good luck on future endeavors.

The front could just be any durable melee, doesn't really have to be sword and board. But yeah, that could work pretty dang well. There a a few teamwork feats that could work that way.
I will work on a list and may ask for some advice in another thread.

Ok, so Kale has the middle. KenderKin do you want the front or the back? I will take which ever is left over.

The Exchange

By the nine hells! Ah,well, hope we can play sometime :)

Front. Sword and board!

Proposing a half-elf cleric of Erastil. I'll try and have him started up tonight.

And I'll be proposing an Elf Cleric of Calistria to up the ante.

*Note*
Character needs revisions.

I need to see how a couple of other recruitments shake out before I definitely commit to submitting a character, but I should know by the end of the weekend. For now, you've got my interest :)

Ok, I will prob be either an archer inquisitor or primary caster in the back. I'm leaning toward the inq.

and here's Voodoo's PC for consideration. I still need to pick traits and fill in backstory. No equipment as requested, but he'll be using a long bow.

Bikgar Fardbal reporting in. An eccentric Dwarf, who doesn't always fit in with his kinfolk. He thought he would find the will of Torag elsewhere.

Sorcerer looking to fill a support character with the ability to throw damage when needed.

(Willing to make a different character to fit party role needed to play)

Sovereign Court

Maybe just me. I feel that the party has already being formed and though I would like to play, I shall withdraw my appplication instead.

Have fun to all successful applicants.

Being fairly new to the site and Pathfinder (if not roleplaying generally), I think this would be a good chance to cut my PBP teeth, since it's designed for those new to Pathfinder. If y'all don't mind a relative newbie.

In a forest near the convergence of Galt, Andoran, and Taldor you say? Hmm, perhaps a young scion of a Galtan noble family, forced to flee into the woods to escape execution, where he learned the ways of the Druid, or maybe Ranger.

I can see lots of interesting possibilities in all these ideas.

So Kale (human, pole arm fighter); Constantine (half orc sword and board melee type), and (alter ego archer inquisitor or full caster) last name Amora? for all three as a trio of siblings....

Along with an aunt elf and/or uncle dwarf......????

A whole family adventure. If you're looking for a crazy relative, I'd be more than happy to play that role.

A general notice for everybody, no characters have been selected.

To Ouachitonian: You are correct that this module would be excellent for beginners to both PbP & Pathfinder. So please submit a character. If somebody could please provide Ouach with a generic template to use to create his PC sheet?

Don't worry about being new, there are a bunch of vets applying here that I'm sure will help you along the way, if you are selected. Or they'll just throw you a Blanket Party. That's what happened to me when I started playing D&D at age 12. I just wish they didn't take so long to set the bones. It still aches in the cold...

*sips tea*

OK, I gotta know about the origin of the name Ouachitonian. At first I thought you were kicking it old school with the tiger face and an AD&D monster. But I was mistaken for a Quaggoth or Quetzalcoatl.

Thats fine GM Nebten, I didn't think you had pre-selected anyone especially with your comment about splitting the family up.

GM - I'm looking at the lion shaman archetype but wonder if there is a better big cat for the Verduran Forest? Lynx?

Also I've taken a regional trait that finds the whole decaying Taldoran background vibe I've got going on Den. It comes from an Ustalav product though so does that nix it or just reflavour to suit Den? I know we start with no gear so the extra 100gp isn't really a biggie for me.

Also if you want me to include the drawback in the background then could you roll? Otherwise I'll rejig things if chosen.

Cheers

Nebten wrote:

Yes I have one. He'll have to ignore the Pathfinder society stuff at the the end.

Link to forum post

Direct link to google doc.

If you use PCGen, I also wrote on output sheet for the forums (under the text options for the output sheets on the program), but it (like the rest of PCGEN) is a bit buggy.

I don't use hero lab, but I think it has an output that pretty formats it for the forums.

Does this mean that characters already posted here will not be selected and should give up or that you're still considering?

He just means that he hasn't committed to anyone yet. There was someone who was discouraged by other folks coordinating characters - I think Nebten was just trying to prevent that sort of discouragement (but not necessarily the coordination).

Q&A with my PC

Spoiler:

Questions and answers with SCG:

Q: How do the monsterous races become so well monsterous?

A: Those of good heart and character are so hurt that they can not continue to live goodly lives in their own homes, in their tribes nor in their nations.....
"To weep, is to make less the depth of grief; Tears, then, for babes; blows and revenge for me.”

Q: How then can they be redeemed?
By choice and opportunity....
“I’ll redeem myself by paying that which is owed when men think least I will”

Justice is bringing the sword to the oppressors.....
Saving the oppressed and blocking the way of the wicked.
Redemption is offering the oppressors a new path to atone for their past.....

Though the oath against fiends is passingly familiar to SCG, he can not follow that oath and stead fast to being a redeemer.....
A paladin who takes an oath against demons, devils, daemons, and other evil outsiders is constantly on the lookout for malicious fiendish insurgence into the world, and faces it with swift and unwavering defiance. Often she works closely with inquisitors, searching for signs of outsider manipulation and possession.....

Signs he looks for
Blame, guilt, shame, worthlessness, discouragement, despair....or one attempting to make others feel such.
VS. Hope, encouragement, redemption, righteousness

I understand that the DM is letting the full course of recruitment finish before he picks anyone at all!

Plus I don't like my siblings that much anyway!!!
I did think it was an interesting idea.....

OK, I gotta know about the origin of the name Ouachitonian. At first I thought you were kicking it old school with the tiger face and an AD&D monster. But I was mistaken for a Quaggoth or Quetzalcoatl.

I'll check out that template momentarily. As for the the name, it's from an old native name (Ouachita) meaning (depending on who you ask) either "land of large bison" or "good hunting ground". 'Twas the name of a tribe within the Caddo Confederacy, and over time became associated with the land they lived in. Today there are the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Therein lies the Ouachita National Forest and the origin of the Ouachita River, which flows down to meet the Red in Louisiana. Beside the river is Ouachita Baptist University. There's also a Ouachita County in Arkansas and a Ouachita Parish in Louisiana. As it happens, I'm a graduate of OBU, who lives in the foothills of the mountains just a few miles from the river. One further connection: my alma mater's mascot is the Tiger, hence the avatar.

to Xylas Foundling:

The adopted trait doesn't work that way. You have to pick up another race trait, not a racial trait. The naming is confusing :/.
