Combo Spells For Casters

Rules Questions

Dark Archive

So I have a question about preforming a spell combo.

Delayed Fireball + Wall of Force in a sphere around an enemy = Delayed Fireball goes off inside the Sphere of Force.

It would contain the fireball I am sure but would it have any concussion effect or increased damage from the 40ft radius fireball going off in such a small space?

not under DnD 3.5 or Pathfinder rules.

In Pathfinder you can't even form a wall of force into a hemisphere or ball.

As the previous posters mention:
1) Pathfinder (and 3.5 which it is based on) both got rid of the rules for rebounding spell damage. So no, it's a fireball that gets contained but nothing more happens.

2) You can't make a sphere or hemisphere around them with force wall. You can only make a flat vertical plane.

Resilient sphere would enclose a creature.

And on top of that, you wouldn't have line if effect to cast your fireball through the wall. But this is all really a topic for the rules forum.

Edit- I see now the delayed blast fireball is cast first!

Order of operations would be to cast delayed blast fireball, then cast resilient sphere.

Just like the Wall of Fire can be formed into a Ring, but it doesn't actually add any heat (as it would in real life, that's the point of a furnace...)

1st thing to learn, D&D/Pathfinder isn't Magic the Gathering.

There are very few intended combos and when combos exist, there are often rules to abate them.

Incidentally, if you want to be able to combo your spells with a fellow caster, there's a teamwork feat for that called Elemental Commixture. It's debatable whether it's worth using, since the secondary spell just gets eaten up by the first spell to add an extra effect that may not be as useful as the second spell itself could have been. Still, there are a variety of effects you can get out of the feat, so you'll probably find situations where at least one of them will be useful- plus, it's very flavorful if you want to represent your mages working together to pull off cool tricks with their magic.

Use Wall of Ice instead of Wall of Force - The wall will contain the Fireball, but likely be destroyed. This will create fog.

Alternately, there are other spells that make for a better combo. Use Cloudkill instead of Fireball, for example.

Hideous Laughter + Aqueous Orb is much more effective: the target begins drowning immediately, as they are incapable of holding their breath.
