Automatic Bonus Progression and Holy Avengers

Rules Questions

The Exchange

With the Automatic Bonus Progression variant, items don't have inherent bonuses, they are given to the character instead, over time. But how does this effect items like a holy avenger, where the bonuses differ according to its use or who is wielding it? Typically a holy avenger is a +2 cold iron longsword in the hands of a non-paladin, but becomes +5 in a paladin's hands. Is that entire aspect lost? Or is only the +2 lost, and the paladin's weapon attunement considered +3 higher when wielding a holy avenger?

Officially, magic items don't have enhancement bonuses of their own within the system. If your GM changes that, I think it's reasonable to use whatever is higher for the item, but not stack the effects. (You get your attunement OR the weapon's base enhancement, never both.)

Would change the increase to a competence bonus, in this one specific instance.
That way it can stack, and it makes sense. Or a divine bonus.

Likely rule it to be similar to how Bane works; the effective bonus is increased in certain situations (in the hands of a Paladin for the Holy Avenger, against the selected creature type for Bane) but for the purposes of Attunement it's still a +2 cold iron longsword.

All good ideas, thanks! I especially like the idea of changing it to a divine bonus, that would make sense!

Use the auto bonus from leveling on your bow r spare weapon instead of the Holy Avenger
