What does it take to find the path?
Does it take dice or skill or math?
Imagination? Wizardly tricks? Barbarian wraaaaath?
Why won't someone tell me
Why can I not see?
Why can't I just take 20
on this queeeeest?

Where is the path?
How can it be found?
I've been scorched and scarred
grappled and grasped
mauled and marred
and buried a year beneath the groooooounnnnd!
I've rolled and I've cursed
And prayed that the worst
won't happen, but it always doooooeeeesss!
And every time I say "I've reached it"
I'm only where it waaaaaaasss!

What does it take to find the path?
Does it take dice or skill or math?
Imagination? Wizardly tricks? Barbarian wraaaaath?
I cry out to the gods above
and they whisper back
"The path... is looooovvvvveee!"

So a bard/skald centric AP then?

Not per se, but it will be written in alliterative verse. (The editing will also be epic!)

But a promotion wouldn't be a secret project.

Well whatever the projects will be I hope they earn the golden leprechaun of excellence.

Ah, but it's taking us to a higher level. Don't you see - it means elevation! We're going to be flying around on airships and dragons!

Well having read this whole thread it seems to me we need to gather what we do know.

1. Their are at least 2 secret projects.

2. That one will be announced on or before paziocon/gencon and one will be after.

3. James isn't the only AP developer that is not going to be developing AP's for a while since Crystal Frasier is going to be developing the one after Strange Aeons which brings up the question what is Rob going to be doing next after he finishes up Hell's Vengeance.

As to guesses even though it has been stated that James is going to help on Horror adventures I don't see these being rulebook's That is Jason's job and I don't see them moving James over to help him. They have other more rule oriented designers that would make more sense if Jason needed help.

So my guesses are.

1. A hardcover on a new continent

2. A hardcover of shadows under Sandpoint (boxed sets don't make money)

3. Something totally original and unexpected.

4. Something 10th anniversary related (second project)

I also think that one of them will release late this year or early next year (the one being announced first.) The other will probably be out around Gencon 2017 to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Runelords

From another thread:

Erik Mona wrote:

Eventually we will do a great big Absalom book along these simpler district divisions, and give this place the attention it deserves.

64 pages ain't enough.

So my top three guesses are:

10th Anniversary Edition AP (Crimson Throne seems most likely)

Absalom Hardcover

Unspeakable Future

PS: Every time I see this thread I sing "Secret Project" in my head.

I think you're on to something here, but when combined with "epic" I think "higher level" means a higher intellectual level, rather than elevation. The obvious conclusion of this is that we're getting a 6-part Pathfinder Legends story set to rival the likes of fantasy classics like Lord of the Rings.

":P" implied, but seeing as it was also implied on my previous post too and people took it the wrong way, making it explicit here.

I will take a stab with a few possibilities:

1) A cryptozoology-based bestiary.

2) A Sorshen-based Runelords follow-up of some kind.

3) A Nocticula-based special AP on her rise from Demon Lord to benevolent goddess of the night.

4) An Atlas of Golarion with an improved "global" map showing all continents in more-or-less equivalent quality to the current map of the Inner Sea region, and light Gazetteer-level entries for the undeveloped continents. (Nobody said he was working alone :) )

I think Absalom is one of Erik Mona's pet projects, so that seems unlikely to me.

Maybe James has been away from splatbooks for too long. Dinosaurs of Golarion, anybody?

...no? Ah well.

I've got no idea what any of the Secret Projects are, but it seems to me there are some dead horses being severely beaten in this thread. Correct me if I'm wrong, but...

Didn't James say this is something he's been wanting to do for over a decade? Surely that rules out Anniversary Editions of any of the old APs. Why would he have said to himself c. 2006, "Wow, it was great getting that AP out the door. I'm really looking forward to rewriting it in 10 years!"

I kind of thought Adventure Paths (including any Level 20/Mythic/"epic" stories) could be eliminated, because he's said he was getting away from writing APs to work on the/a Secret Project.

He said that about one of the secret projects, but it's looking like he's got several projects in the works. And odds are, one of them will be a 10th anniversary project.

He certainly won't be working on something in the main AP line, although I'm sure he'll still have some input there.

Whatever the next campaign setting hardcover will be is certainly a good guess too.

Ok I am going to use conjecture. Since he used the term epic in his secret project announcement in the latest AP volume, I suspect it is an AP that goes up to level 20. I remember him saying recently he would like to do an up to 20 AP. So my conjecture is an AP that goes to level 20, I may even hazard a guess at mythic even though he said it caused a little grar among some of the contrarians last time a mythic AP came about. That is all I can conjecture with the limited info I have. Said AP must be something of supreme interest to James to do such a move. Like a continuation of the runelords story or something super elven. But not lovecrafty as Adam is doing that one with Strange Aeons.

I do want to do some expectation management and point out we don't use the word "epic" in Pathfinder to denote "above 20th level." It's really only in the game as a type of damage reduction, and that's only becasue of a holdover from 3.5's SRD kinda.

When I use the word "epic" these days, it's not a game term. It's the classic adjective version of the word.

Of course, I now suspect this post will start folks going in entirely different predictive directions...

Hmm so to manage my first conjecture I am going to have to go with an Adventure Path that goes up to 20th level (but not past) based on a subject close James' interests. As he only seemed to react to the post 20th level guess. Now I just need to delve deeper in to "ask James Jacobs anything thread" and determine more of his interests in Golarion. I said a continuation of the runelords story as it is up his alley (and to me that is still on the table). I don't think it is a rulebook just because of James' job title as creative director, he usually stays in the campaign setting, and Adventure Path development. So if folks can determine more of James' major contributions to Golarion and what he enjoys the most about Golarion, you will have...

I think I may have gotten to close to the mark on this one mwahahahahaha

Hmm, that's not exclusive - you can guess and still be surprised...

I think he is on a mix of rather mundane projects (like a module) and extraordinary projects (like a new medium for PF). Like most creative people, he needs to do something new now and then, but is partially restricted by business concerns.

As long as it doesn't result in a burnout, it's all good.

Starfinder Superscriber

I'd go with the future game that he's had for a LONG time and run a few times OR Epic Pathfinder where it actually goes epic and not just mythic.

After adopting out the old veterans to loving homes where they can hunt interns, mad scientists and run with a motorcycle gang, JJ is training the newest batch of cave raptors for the warehouse.

Freshly hatched and fed lovingly with Liz's cooking, the newest batch are learning the basics of stealth, command and control and teamwork.

Curenntly adorable and cat sized, soon they will be all grown up enough to take on the task of patrolling the warehouse and "assisting" in intern reviews.

No word on if JJ is getting a motorcycle...yet!

Thoughts to consider:

It's probably not unspeakable futures: James has said in the past that he wants to maintain control of that IP. So unless Paizo offered him some really sweet deal, I don't see that happening. Plus it goes against Paizo's "no competing settings" rules

It's probably also not a new continent. In the past they have stated that creating Tian Xia was one of the hardest things they had to do, since it's basically inventing a new setting from nothing. James has also stated on multiple occasions that there were no plans to do so in the near future. I would also argue that some of the continents might be of special interest to other folks; I know Adam Daigle seems to be taking the lead on developing Arcadia for instance.

I could see a Planes, Darklands, or Distant World book, although the latter feels like something Sutter would take the lead on, and I am not sure James is super interested in non Dreamlands/Abyss planes, so it doesn't feel like he would be the sole person working on that.

Oh and of course a Varisia hardcover, which I think he would also be stoked to work on.

I've got to say, a book on culture, including cuisine, and ways to actually bring that alive at the table would be fascinating. It's one of my favorite parts of a lot of fantasy books and something that's really hard to do in a game. At least I've never seen it done well and rarely even attempted.

Culture, local customs, religion - not the magic parts, but the actual observances and practices, basically the alien mindset of so many past real cultures, much less those of other races.

The "wanting to do for over a decade" part is not related to the secret project...

Quote:
I do have plans for a particularly epic Adventure Path that has long been close to my heart, one that I’ve been eager to launch for nearly a decade now. It’ll be a few more years until it sees print...

I suspect that this relates to the AP going to level 20 by making it a "hard mode" adventure discussed late last year. And (my guess) involves other Runelords.

So for what the secret project is? Well, we don't know what the hardcover campaign book is for this year, so it's probably that. No ideas on the content, though... But a CotCT Anniversary Edition would be great.

I would love a Globe of Golarion, but I doubt that would be one of JJ secret projects.

Dragon78 wrote:

If that requires the creative director to dedicate 18 to 24 months of his work-life, something's very, very wrong.

We're talking about a couple projects that justify (a sizable portion of his) workload be shifted to other staff, for a long time. It's complex, it's creative, it can't be done quickly. By it I of course mean "they". So yeah, I gave up a long time ago. This isn't about anything obvious.
