Or before AND after.
It's a combination of enjoyment and frustration. I just hope that folks won't get too disappointed if their expectations go too high, especially given some folks' ability to over-read into words I wrote and make leaps of logic and assumptions that are not directly supported by what I've said before.
(I'd actually assumed that by the time the foreword to #102 was out that at least ONE of the "secret projects" I'm currently involved in, of which there are more than one, would be something I could talk about... but we're still at the very least a few weeks away from being able to talk about that, alas...)
Okies, stay sane and healthy Directorsaur ^w^

Saltmarsh, Red Hand of Doom, Lords of Madness, Burnt Offerings, Souls for Smugglers' Shiv, The Rise of the Runelords Anniversary Edition, a dedication to answering fan questions way beyond the call of duty...
Any risk of overly high expectations is entirely self-inflicted. :p

No, no, I got it, I got it, he's working on the "Dark Aroden" saga, where Aroden comes back from the dead even more powerful, and things look cool, but then Aroden goes a little loopy and eats a star, and a bunch of aliens who look like asparagus get wiped out and then a star-faring empire goes after Aroden, who has a lucid moment and agrees to stand trial, and then...
My track record for guessing upcoming Paizo projects is dirt-awful, and I'm pretty happy about that.

Let me just say: I have huge respect for James and his designed stuff is beautiful. If he now gets time to work on a project he has wanted to do for a good long while, that is very very very exciting. And most centrally: To me it doesn't much matter what it is. I generally despise Wild west stuff... But I would trust James to make a good one if he did.
We will know in due time.

Preferably, this happens in a way that TSR (later WotC) DIDN'T do, so that Paizo succeeds where TSR/WotC fumbled, and then we both get a good movie (as opposed to, you know . . .) and the Pathfinder brand receives widespread recognition.
Cole Deschain |
Paizo has already learned from TSR's biggest mistake... I loved all those campaign settings, but coming up with the cash to buy a Birthright, a Ravenloft, a Planescape, and a Dark Sun book in the same month was... not happening.

OK, I can't stand to see you all suffer so, NDA-be-damned, I'm gonna spill:
Paizo is working on a Pathfinder-based Saturday morning cartoon, starring Kobold Cleaver and his ragtag band of misfit adventurers. As unicorns (& pegacorns & Mabelcorns) are now Unionized and Sebasticorns are too expensive, I myself was chosen as the budget-minded party sidekick.

Intriguing, isn't it? What could be so important to pull Mr. Jacobs from developing what would probably be his favorite theme for an Adventure Path ever?
Now people around here have always shown a remarkable ability to come up with inside information, rumors, and competent guesswork to figure out stuff like this so I pose the question to the community:
What could James Jacobs be working on?
(If a thread like this already exists, I apologize and would like the link. My search-fu was not enough to find any.)
My guess is a re-write of Second Darkness, Anniversary Edition style... its the AP that he's said he'd most like to re-do and it'd be secret because Paizo keeps swearing that they're never doing that again despite near constant requests for it.
Might not be it but aman can dream, can't he?
Dang, I would love to see that. I hope they pull him for a few more like that...ie Shattered Star, Curse, and maybe, just maybe, Legacy

Was one of the secret projects announced today?
Nope. Folks will notice, I suspect, when one of those projects is let out of the bag.
The Minis Maniac |
Ok I am going to use conjecture. Since he used the term epic in his secret project announcement in the latest AP volume, I suspect it is an AP that goes up to level 20. I remember him saying recently he would like to do an up to 20 AP. So my conjecture is an AP that goes to level 20, I may even hazard a guess at mythic even though he said it caused a little grar among some of the contrarians last time a mythic AP came about. That is all I can conjecture with the limited info I have. Said AP must be something of supreme interest to James to do such a move. Like a continuation of the runelords story or something super elven. But not lovecrafty as Adam is doing that one with Strange Aeons.
Samy |
I'm'a guess it has something to do with a dystopian Mad Max/Fallout type setting. Maybe they're working on building a playground somewhere on Casmaron or Sarusan where the various races fight over black liquid that makes their roaring vehicles go fast. Put Technology Guide and Ultimate Combat vehicles in a blender, add more than a touch of Numeria and who knows. My guess is Ultimate Technology and Fury Road AP.
Either that, or finally the Sandpoint hardcover.

Good grief, his secret project is a cat!
Flumph-loving dwarf |
Me thinks that after my little friends have been successfully redeemed, now the time has come to give us Flumphs Revisited, where we will learn more about the Rangers' most beloved animal companion, the Forest Flumph, as well as the the eagle-hunting (or was it the other way 'round) Flying Flumphs. Then there's the suicidal Fire Flumph, the subaquatic Flumph Fish (which puts terror into the hearts of even the most evil aboleths). And that's just a little taste of all the awesome flumph-related things in this 128-page special campaign book (and wait til' you've seen the receipt for Fried Flumph, a taste that will never ever leave your mouth, I promise).
Though I'm wondering why James Jacobs still would keep the most exiting addition to the Pathfinder universe a secret. I guess he probably thinks that the human mind might be to fragile for such a splendid work to comprehend.

I do want to do some expectation management and point out we don't use the word "epic" in Pathfinder to denote "above 20th level." It's really only in the game as a type of damage reduction, and that's only becasue of a holdover from 3.5's SRD kinda.
When I use the word "epic" these days, it's not a game term. It's the classic adjective version of the word.
Of course, I now suspect this post will start folks going in entirely different predictive directions...

Oh man! You are going to single-handly port and rebalance the 3.5 SRD epic rules for pathfinder?
Darkbridger |
Something that may involve one or more of the following:
Not limited to a single area or threat. World-Golarion-spanning AP?
It will go to level 20. It may involve Mythic. It might even involve the slow advancement track and require 12 issues to tell the tale.
Time travel.
Aboleths.
Gods... plural... perhaps a deity-level shake up or war that bleeds over into Golarion. Rovagug escapes?
The restoration of prophecy to Golarion and the end of the Age of Lost Omens.

Hmm so to manage my first conjecture I am going to have to go with an Adventure Path that goes up to 20th level (but not past) based on a subject close James' interests. As he only seemed to react to the post 20th level guess. Now I just need to delve deeper in to "ask James Jacobs anything thread" and determine more of his interests in Golarion. I said a continuation of the runelords story as it is up his alley (and to me that is still on the table). I don't think it is a rulebook just because of James' job title as creative director, he usually stays in the campaign setting, and Adventure Path development. So if folks can determine more of James' major contributions to Golarion and what he enjoys the most about Golarion, you will have your Adventure Path premise. *evil laughter*

Could be a hardcover rule book, a hardcover campaign setting book, a Pathfinder movie, a Pathfinder TV show, a Pathfinder video game, Pathfinder toy line, a new campaign setting, a new product line, Pathfinder board game, a unknown AP, unmentioned Pathfinder related merchandise, etc.
I'm a big fan of "etc."—I hope it's some of that!

Besides, if anyone at Paizo is going to shift to a lifestyle of Hollywood drug parties and playmates in hot tubs, I'm afraid to say it's going to be me, not Jacobs.
I mean, I think that much is clear.

My best guesses regarding this are, in decending order of probability...
1) Curse of the Crimson Throne: Anniverary Edition
2) "Shadows Under Sandpoint" Adventure Path
3) Campaign Setting: Guide to Absalom (Hardcover: 250+ pages)
4) Unspeakable Futures Roleplaying Game
[I would totally buy all of these!]

My guesses -
Making an octagon based dry-erase map
An anger management clinic for Barbarians and Bloodragers
New hybrid classes including the Occult Adventures classes
A simulacrum that doesn't melt in Spring
Anything to justify the d30 into Pathfinder
Monopoly: the Pathfinder edition
