As for blizzards. It never fails. First snow is a catastrophe even if it is 1". By February it better be over a foot if you are squawking. And supplies? Why everyone becomes a milk drinker when it snows is beyond me. Have some perspective biotches! I've lived through 5-foot snow events. I've never been trapped for more than 48 hours. If you can't make it with what you have in the house...

Like, literally I cannot get out of my street if there's more than an inch on the ground. Thus snow isn't fun or happy to me. Despite being one of the snowiest cities in the country, Syracuse rarely plows the streets (they usually only put down salt, which turns the roads into a sludgy mess that rots out the bottom of your car), and the sidewalks never get shoveled, which means that by January, they're solid ice. During the winter, the city is barely navigable, even by car.

I live here. It is awesome every day.I will grant NYC is fun IF you are a tourist.
Commuting in everyday for work sucks. The view from the Empire State Building gets old pretty quick, except for sunsets, f+&&ing gorgeous to watch sunsets.
I have to agree with that, there's always something new, or a favorite haunt, or the energy. The ability to be surrounded by millions and still be completely on your own while strolling through Manhattan, walk into a museum and spend 5 hours without uttering a single word, yet strike up a conversation with a total stranger on the train about something utterly random....I love it.

So my Thanksgiving game plan:
Cranberry-brined turkey
Mashed potatoes-strictly trad
Stuffing-minimalist. Bread, butter, bell seasoning
Mashed Turnip and carrots
Green bean casserole-I'm going trad here too.
Jellied cranberry- because it just ain't Turkey Day without that can of red jelly
Dripping gravy- easy to make with the pan drippings and some flour
Scratch dinner rolls. Have to prep the dough beforehand, but it's worth it
Italian bread- also scratch
Apple crisp- I'm not a huge pie fan, but some hot apple crisp and cold Cape Cod Creamery vanilla ice cream will be just the perfect dessert.
I will be making Thanksgiving dinner this Monday.

Ummmm...Canadian here, chiming in...you do realize don't you that if you are snowed in and the power is off...just putting the spoilables in a snowbank will keep them from spoiling, right?Yeah we get the everyone forgets how to drive thing over here. But what annoys me more is everyone buying up all the f@%&ing milk and bread.
WTF is that gonna do for you if you get snowed in? Other than go bad?
Its not about power going out causing things to go bad, it's people "stocking up" and buying 10 gallons of milk and 10 loaves of bread a piece. It doesn't matter if you shove it in snow or not, that s&~$ doesn't have a long shelf life.

Scandinavian chiming in with how nice it is to suddenly have a freezer shaped exactly like your balcony during winter.
Milk is not a good thing for being snowed in. You still want it, use dry milk. Bread is equally useless, use hard bread instead.

Still haven't seen it, which is why I didn't recognize the name. I remember hearing the premise when it first came out and thinking it was a brilliant idea, but just never watched.
I'm just getting around to it. It's really well done. The cinematography is stunning, and the characters are well-portrayed
I assume you're referring to Ithaca. I can kind of understand you guys having issues, given that the entire town is built on like a 30% grade. Didn't some guy spin out of control and crash into a building downtown a few years back?

that happened, but it wasn't snow-related. Two years ago, in May, an 18-wheeler lost its brakes coming down NYS Rte 79 westbound into town. There is a two-mile long steep grade into downtown that ends in a "T" intersection in front of a pedestrian mall. The truck smashed into a bar and restaurant at the bottom of the hill, which eventually collapsed the building. One of the bartenders was killed in the crash, and six patrons were injured. Everyone else got out unharmed before the building collapsed. Thankfully, it happened at 4 PM; an hour later and the bar would have been packed.
The building has since been rebuilt, and the bar & restaurant reopened in June of this year.
I remember that. Wasn't in Ithaca, but I did hear about it.

Positive note: While working at the hospital today I got the bulk of my next assignment done. So...yay!

So, diving into my sleep statistics from May-now it looks as if my daily average of sleep is 5 hours, 31 minutes. The month to month breakdown echoes that average, varying within the five hour range.
Frankly it's more than I thought. I expected to see somewhere in the four-hour range
I am very thankful for whatever genetic quirk gives me the abilty to thrive with five hours sleep

In my 20's I was good on 4 hours. That's all I ever got especially when I was in law school as I had to work full time even though I was a full time student.
Now I need at least 6, even though I usually get 5. If I know I am going to the gym the next day I try to get 7. Hard to lift heavy duty weight on no or little sleep.
Yeah three jobs and school in a distant city makes for little sleep.

Good news: I was at building administration to check few things and, after the association of flat owners forgave my interest from late payments that accumulated across the few years before my emplyment in UK, my balance of payments for administration, heating, water, and trash removal is in large positive. And by large I mean that I won't have to pay anything for the next six months. (I also have been overpaying a bit for the last half year, since my friends moved out - which cut down trash and waste bills).
Less good news: If I had checked that earlier I wouldn't pay recently. The overpaid amount would be less but I would have much more cash at hand.
Ah, well, actual experience tells me I can live on cheap soups, noodles, potatoes, onions, and such for quite a long time.

Just made myself a leftover sandwich: bread, mashed sweet potato, dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy, spinach, turkey, salt, pepper, butter, bread.
Having that and a glass of milk for early dinner, having already eaten pumpkin pie (because life is uncertain).
It don't get no better'n this.
Planning my run to the store tomorrow to shop for Thanksgiving. Hopefully everything is discounted:)
