It's been over a year and Character and Role card creation still say coming soon. Anyone have any idea if this is ever going to happen?

What's the hold up?

I have no additional knowledge, but my guess is that they are the most difficulty to design because they are the most variable. Look at a character card. Here are some good examples:

RotR Sajan's.
S&S Damiel
CD Darago

Compare their skills, specifcially the size of the skill area as a whole and the placement of green lines between skills. When a character has a skill that references another skill, it bumps that green line down, so that the skills are grouped.

Compare their powers. First, Damiel's power block takes up a lot more space than Sajan's. It touches the bottom of his skills block. And you have some powers that are 1 line, some that are 2+. And that effects where those green lines are.

I've played around with the community templates a bit, and those were the headaches I had. I wouldn't be surprised if they are having the same headaches.

May be it is not soo commercially successful as it should be?

I dont know, but just a guess.

Lines are free (they'll move automatically as part of the table) but choosing whether and how to massage the text is hard to do automatically. I'd want them to give me control over some of the text properties and accurate previews so I could pick the look.

FWIW, for my character tents I use font size (for the whole block) and tracking (per-cell) to fit text in the Power blocks. Skills get doubled sometimes and could probably use some more experimentation.

Grand Lodge

There's limitations for all the cards and the character and role cards are the most difficult to create since they're the most complicated. To do this in an automated fashion, the formatting of character cards will be different. Maybe they're still adjusting that. Also spacing for powers vs flavor text would also be difficult. I'm sure those cards will be coming soon.

It has been less than a year. I don't think it'll take a whole year...

Cool. :)

They're now available: Character, Role, Token. (Price for cards is now $.35 which is up from $.25 but down from the original $.50!)

Are all original token cards aavailable?
So if u need a spare copy...

They're not. Is there a real need for them?

I guess you could recreate them for personal use if it's OK to use the Community Use artwork. Alternatively, you could use practically anything else to keep track of where you are. For example, if you want something card sized you could print a picture of the character art at the right size and put it in a card protector.

Has anyone found a way to remove the "proficient with" field for characters it doesn't apply to?

Silver Crusade RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

You can simply write the word "None", which is how Paizo made those characters with no proficiencies, I believe.

Paizo takes the line out completely.

The Character and Role card creators are an interesting set of compromises. I hope folks like what they came up with.

Grand Lodge

Yeah, I've printed up some errata'd characters and you do have to change where your eye looks for skills at times.

Newbie here. Looking at DTC, I see a number of Earthdawn themed cards. Does anyone know more details, such as who is working on them?

Paizo Employee Chief Technical Officer

That would be a problem—when you create a card that's visible to the public, you're required to represent that you're not violating anyone's intellectual property ownership, and that would.

Which cards in particular are you referring to?

gavin kerr wrote:

If you search for Travar, namegiver, ork, windling, etc. you can see that someone is building up all the cards necessary for an adventure. Scenarios, locations, villains, henchmen, allies - I haven't found them all because the DTC interface is very bad. You can't search for cards by the creator, and the publisher field is always 'Paizo'.

I suspect a note to the offender would result in them being made private.

I sent in a support request to DTC. They won't tell me the creator's contact info, but they are willing to pass along my info and questions.

There's plenty of offending cards in there, like the beholder "villain" which has stats and game text for a different game. If Paizo cares about it, someone from Paizo might bug DTC to add a reporting/flagging system.

I didnt use DTC yet as I am still waiting for SS update cards to be released.

I think there is no way you could reprint a BLACK LOTUS on DTC and the same applies to the PACG cards. A exact copy is not possible due to the upper left "Community Something" marker. So i wouldnt be so scared that an original FIRE SNEEZE is duplicated ten thousand times and sold on Ebay for 30 bucks each.

Huh?

This discussion isn't about counterfeiting cards. It's about using someone else's intellectual property. Earthdawn is copyrighted material so you can't use exact information drawn from that source. Same with existing APs and modules from Paizo. You can't create Public cards with copyrighted source material. You can create them privately but cannot then sell those cards. That's why you can't create an AP based on Reign of Winter and post cards publicly.

I have duplicated cards privately for my own use ... usually so I can mark them up. You can create your own character and role cards for any of the iconic characters available under Community Use policy. And they can be public. But you can't duplicate any of those cards and post them publicly.

In this case, it isn't the cards, it's the concepts. I think there are already at least 100 cards that use Earthdawn concepts or 'indicia'. If the creator's intent is to make an Earthdawn adventure path, that's going to be a lot of cards.

I don't know every image in the PACG Community Use Package, but the card "Journey to Travar" is using a picture of four iconic heroes on a forest path, about to be jumped by some goblins. Is it a legit use?

DTC does have a 'Report this title' link that you can use to flag copyright violations. Maybe the creator thinks this is all fair use, or already cleared it with FASA. That's why I'm trying to contact them.

Grand Lodge

If the artwork is from copyrighted material, that's out as well.

You can put up comments about cards, I think. If the original creator had gotten permission, he/she should have posted that somewhere.

If you think "I can't believe that the Pathfinder team didn't make this awesome thing!" there was probably a reason why we didn't make it.

Is "it would be too awesome and therefore cause people's heads to explode when their minds couldn't contain the full knowledge to comprehend the awesomeness" ever one of those reasons? Because the Monk Class deck probably comes close to that.

Yeah, that. You're going to love one of those Weapon 6s long time.

Sovereign Court

Hi everybody,

I have one question regarding the Card Creator (maybe a stupid one)
I can't see the back of the card I created and especially for the Location & Scenario Cards....
Does anyone had the same problem ? And maybe the solution ?

L.O.

Grand Lodge

Steve Wieck would be able to answer this completely but you're correct, after the card is created, you can no longer see the "back" of the card. You're only seeing the "front". Back when two-sided cards were being tested and produced, I mentioned this to him. Right now, there is no way to see both sides of the cards.

Thanks a lot for your answer Theryon.

So we will wait for Steve Wieck.

Because if I put myself in the place of the customer, if I buy a scenario card, I would like to know if there are custom location needed.

Grand Lodge

That was the main one that I pointed out since you wouldn't know what else to purchase. Although if I'm going to purchase most of the two-sided cards, I'd want to know what the other part was.

Since the topic has come around to include intellectual property issues on DTC, I had a question. I made my first character cards based on a couple of homebrew characters I put together as an experiment. (Turns out the experiment worked fairly well, and I wanted to pretty things up.)

The interface currently does not allow you to select any of the Paizo Licensed Images that are on DTC for the front of the card -- the array of portraits to choose from just isn't there. It's there for the back, but of course we want the same portrait on both sides. (I've already contacted them about it.)

I thought I'd read that the Community Use Policy permitted using images that had been published in the blog. Presumably every Iconic image is in that list, along with dozens of other lesser-known folks. We can't make a character based on an as-yet-unreleased Iconic -- fine, just call the character by another name and use a different portrait. Would it be possible to use an image from the blog or CU file on DTC? Or have I missed something?

Silver Crusade RPG Superstar 2014 Top 16

From what I've been told by Paizo folks, using images from the Paizo Blog is perfectly allowed. But of course I don't work for them, so I don't offer a guarantee.

Ludwig0 I thought there was a comment section on the website. If you make a scenario just post a comment in that section and list the locations needed if you had to make any that seems like the easiest thing to do. Now they just need a way to search for a card type, or a card b6 name.

In this situation, couldn't you download the image and trim it to use on the other side? I assume you're talking about the character cards with a full portrait one side and the above-the-waist version over flavor text on the reverse. Or are you concerned that trimming the image violates the CUP?

Per the Community Use Policy: "You may use any of the text or artwork published in the Paizo Blog at paizo.com/paizo/blog, with the exception of excerpts of Planet Stories publications, Pathfinder Comics, and any logos and icons that aren't also in the Community Use Package. You may not use any photographs published in the blog (because those rights are usually not ours to offer). You may not use artwork, including maps, that have not been published in the blog, although you may create your own interpretations of material presented in our artwork and maps, provided that your interpretations don't look substantially similar to our materials."

Since the cards created at drivethru fall under the CUP, all the blog art (art, not logos or photos) is fair game.

The interface doesn't seem to give you the option of downloading the available images. You pick from a menu that shows you 15 images at a time. Click one of those and the image can be cropped and sized... but I can't take their own file and upload it back to them. Well, I could screen-capture it, I suppose, but that's getting a bit much.

The affected interface was actually the character card, the one that lists the character's initial powers on one side and the breakdown of their deck on the other side. (The card you describe is the token card, which I think was fine... although the images provided aren't large enough to fill a card. So you get a talking head with a lot of white around it. This is why those cards I made weren't made public. If I can do them right, I might expose them to all and sundry.)

It hadn't occurred to me to wonder about trimming/cropping/altering an image from here. The issue of whether such an image could be used at all was blocking my view. :-) But it's a great question.

Grand Lodge

It's very easy to grab the images from here and from the community use files, edit them to the specifications required then upload them to use on your cards. I now have a set of images ready to rebuild any card I want.

Any word on when the Season of the Righteous decks will be available?

Ditto.

Silver Crusade

Vic answered this a couple of times on Thursday. Basically they were not quite as ready as Tanis originally thought, and she and Vic have them on the list.

Maybe we'll have them in time for my birthday in a few weeks.
