The recent Fate series had a crossover with Asterix. That alone puts it in my good book

Not a Dr. Fate fan, but he is a Doctor (i.e. sorcerer supreme, not a Time Lord, which I am lukewarm to at best). So he's cool with me.

Freehold,

If he was a Time Lord, he and Rip Hunter would be having very heated discussions about this whole mess.

While it's unclear about some aspects, they are TRYING to clear up after Nu-52 clear failure to reach a wider audience. So...we'll see how that goes.

Scarab Sages

Paizo Superscriber

Speaking of New52 mess. Superman's reminiscing shows they kept that his parents died when he young and never met Lois Lane.
I know that goes back to the golden age and not as it was in John Byrne's Post-Crisis era, but I still miss Ma and Pa Kent.
Couldn't they have made it so they died after Lois and Clark were married?

Charles,

Uhm I thought they did see Lois and Clark get married. Just not meet their grandkid.

I could be wrong thought.

Scarab Sages

Paizo Superscriber

Nope, in the current issue of Action, he clearly states the Kents never met Lois.

I must have missed that.

ALSO! Part III of the Button...was weirder than even I thought was possible.

I've just moved to Oregon as of today (ten hour drive!), so no comics for me until my shop ships me my list. But soon!

that's a looooong drive! But congratulations!

Superman took a turn for the weird.

Spoiler:
Please don't make the town to always have been against them. Hopefully the residents are all stored away in cryo-tubes.

Also, just saw a TP of Superman and Lois (before Rebirth) and it shows Jon can fly at the end (or at least hover), but in Super Sons he falls when Lex startles him while he climbing. Maybe it has something to do with what is going on in Superman.

Pathfinder Campaign Setting, Companion, Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Batman was saying Jon should be more powerful than he is, he was trying to run some tests on the local farm milk because he had suspicions.

Only he got Black Gooed and hasn't been seen since

Perhaps it's because I haven't been a regular reader of Action/Superman (only picked up Action 975/976 and the Superman issues that dovetailed with them) but the whole "resolution" of Superman's continuity seemed both rushed and insubstantial to me.

I mean, Kelex shows Superman three or four memory tapes and this somehow represents a perfect, seamless, logical backstory integrating two timelines?

Superman can't identify anything that's changed; he's entirely unaware of any inconsistencies in his personal history. Yet he and Lois are somehow aware that "It's not us that's important, it's our son." So important that the multiverse will twist itself into knots for Jonathan Samuel's sake?

If that's true, it's a huge turnoff for me. Few things I like less than a Chosen One story.

What I may like even less is that Clark and Lois are somehow aware of the kid's supreme importance to reality -- and serenely so, even if they haven't got the first clue of why it should be true.

There is also the fact that Conner (IE: the Post-Death of Superman- Superboy) is missing from the records. Death and Rebirth, the destruction of Coast city, Cyborg Sup, Eradicator Sup and Steel all there but no Superboy.

A key thing to remember is that this world is the DCU we knew, and that bits and pieces have been removed by persons unknown for a specific reason.

Conner is a piece that person felt needed to be removed, but at the same time they clearly felt there still needed to be a Superboy

Scarab Sages

Wait another 18 months. All will be revealed. (I hope)

Ok so after some discussion with other people I think I have a good grasp of what the current situation is

1) The Silver Age and probably a good chunk of the Golden Age seem to have happened

2) Flash causes Flashpoint
In causing Flashhpoint Barry makes the timeline vulnerable to attack (Damn it Barry)
Pandora sensing the attack tries to strengthen the timeline by Blending the Wildstorm universe into the main DCU

The Attack removes large chunks of the DC Timeline includng most of the Silver and Golden Age. The DC Timeline is wounded and then stiches itself backtogether with what's left.

As part of the Attack Superman and Lois are split into "red" and "blue" Red is allowed to remain in the timeline while Blue is discarded along with all the other stolen time fragments. This is a deliberate act to weaken Superman and his relationship to Lois

3) Mega-Brainiac collects various Time Fragments including those discarded by the "Enemy" this includes "Blue" Superman and Lois. These and bottled and sit for years on Planet X under Telos' watch. During this time, his powers lost Superman and Lois have Jon.

4) Convergance happens. This results in "Blue" Superman and Lois re-entering the DCU Timeline. They live their own life and raise their son while avoiding notice. They beleive they are from an alternate reality.
This is not the case, This is their reality with a wounded timeline, and they are infact "half" of the original Lois and Clark.

5) Rebirth: Wally escapes the Speedforce. In doing so Wally heals part of the wounded timeline restoring several key things such as the Titans, Jonny Thunder and maybe even the Legion.

6)Superman reborn: Red and Blue re-merge becoming a whole Superman and Lois Lane. In merging they effectively heal some more of the wounded Timeline, causing a "retcon" that ripples through the DCU altering the lives of many, not just Lois and Clark.

So the DCU that currently exists is the Original DCU, only with a wounded timeline.

The future of the DCU depends on how many more events can be Healed and how many will fail to be Healed.

We also have Paralax Hal on the loose, as well as Pre-crisis Supergirl and Barry Allen. It is possible that merging these with their current selves may further Heal the timeline.

Grey,

Some of what you said makes sense. It's clear the timeline and reality of that have some how been 'wounded" if not erased at points.

Certainly while Conner isn't around he was there for a time. But it kept fluctuating depending on things. (And of course writers being writers.)

What I think is MOST important for Charles to understand is we had TWO Supermen who are the same but different. Not just alternate realities but a schism of the original Superman Pre-Flashpoint. Same for Lois.

Now how does that dovetail into what we see in say, The Button? Clearly whom ever has this power can hold pieces of the timeline together, as long as they aren't like alternate stuff. I think. So I think what happened with Reborn Superman is clearly an after-effect of that person/individual/entity losing control over that due to unexpected shifts.

Jonathan Samuel Kent is important ONLY because he provides linkage to both Pre-Flashpoint (the Son of Superman) and the new 52 Superboy (who was ALSO the son of Lois and Clark.) So...that might help? I dunno.

Pathfinder Campaign Setting, Companion, Roleplaying Game Subscriber

I wonder if Harvest is still out there. He considers Jon to be his son, would not be surprised if he targets the current one.

On thing I think is neat about Rebirth is that Retcons are not simply the result of the story they are a key part of it.

For each Victory our heroes restore part of DC history.
For each defeat they might loose a part of it forever.

This is a literal fight over DC Continuety, with the final shape of the DCU being the prize.

I don't know if this is true, but I sort of remember a few pages that showed Kid Miracleman before he started the London Massacre and a Dr.Manhatten clone reading a book and wonder if this was an attempt to put more of Moore's works into the main DCU. If so, there is nooooooo way the London Massacre is going to go like it did(NSFW warning before you google!)

Manny,

Miracle man is now more Marvel than DC....so.....

Grey,

That might be how it works out.

I think it's pretty clever actually.

If you are a new fan, you get to watch the official DC history unfold right before your eyes.

If you are an Old fan, you have a real investment in the story because you are hoping your favorite parts manage to survive.

I mean Jonny Thunder is key to reviving the JSA but depending on how that story turns out will we get back Infinity Inc. as well? When you think about the hints so far the JSA seems to have vanished during the McCarthy Hearings, only 9 years or so after ww2 ended. How old would they be? We might get them back in their late 30s early 40s. How old would their kids be assuming they even have any.

What if we get a Teen-age Infinity Inc?

Who knows? Right now I'm still wondering how the hell they got Hank Henshaw but as normal human but still managed to reference Death of Superman and the return of Superman stuff...yet we still have Zor-El as Cyborg Superman...

Scarab Sages

Paizo Superscriber

Looks like DC is cherry picking, and not all of it is good.

So in other news!

Wally West meet...Wally West!

Scarab Sages

Paizo Superscriber

Knew that was coming.

Charles,

Yeah but I assumed it would be on Wally West (the old one's) Time table. Not Deathstroke's.

Pathfinder Campaign Setting, Companion, Roleplaying Game Subscriber

Yeah, been waiting for them to meet up and talk but this does kind of force the issue.

Grey,

Among other things that felt forced and weird:

We know have TWO Cyborg Supermen! The original (Hank Henshaw) and also Zor-el!

So....yeah confusion.

Did Hank get re-cyborged. I know he was forming up a Superman revenge squad but I though he was still flesh and blood + whatever he picked up on his way back from Jupiter and that mystery Black Gemstone thing.

(Missed Action this week, didn't realize it till I got home)

Grey,

Yes. Read the latest issue to see what happened.

Scarab Sages

Paizo Superscriber

Okay, looks like our mysterious antagonist not only split Superman in two, but for some reason he restored Henshaw to his human form and maybe erased that knowledge(?). The ungrateful Henshaw likes his cyborg body better and used the black gem to get it back.

Charles,

Probably yes. I think once Superman got back together, Henshaw remembers and is now looking for revenge.

Scarab Sages

Paizo Superscriber

Speaking of revenge, Zod in Suicide Squad. YIKES!

Yeah...That is what I beleive they call Holding a Tigre by the Tail.

It never works out well for anyone except the Tigre

Grey,

The latest comic proved that already.

Yeah Zod was quick to figure that out. If a bash to the head can hurt him it means the head is more vulnerable than the body, because of the Kryptonite, the weakest point in the head is where the bomb is, thus Heat Vision surgery.

Question is will he play along for a while until he can get people out of the zone or will he just snap Waller's neck and be done with it.

I think he could do both before anyone is the wiser, Grey.

Also of note, the flashback was Wally, Lilian, Donna, Roy, Garth, and Dick. Kory, Victor Gar and Victor weren't there.

Hmm, someone editing Conner out actually seems to hint at a time Trapper/Superboy Prime angle. With Bart and Conner out of the picture, he had a grudge against both.

who are Lillian and Victor Gar?

Freehold,

I think he meant Lillian Clay aka Omen, the double use of Victor is probably an error but he meant (I assume!) Victor Stone aka Cyborg and Gar is Garfield Logan aka Beast Boy.

Matthew,

Not sure that's what it is but I think that Time Trapper and/or Superboy Prime MIGHT have a part to play in this. However I remain doubtful.

Got my issue of action.

It's interesting...Before Flashpoint Henshaw had become a nihilist seeking death because his powers and the superborg body had rendered him immortal, resurrecting from every destruction.

Now reduced to ordinary flesh and blood human he wants nothing more than to reclaim that all powerful immortal body.

Grey,

Some times you should be careful what you wish for. Plus who knows? Maybe this Henshaw is different from him pre-Flashpoint self in the sense he never had a wife and friends.

So...it's Thursday...

Should we talk about the Speed Force Elephants in the room?

Or the fact Dan Abbot confirmed that WW and Superman NEVER dated!

Or maybe you know the Big Blue Hand and the death of Thawne...AGAIN!

"Who killed Thawne?" I don't think it was Dr. M. even if he has done it before.
Did anyone notice when he picked up the button, the conversation he was having was with Silk Spectre while they were on the moon during the series?

[spoiler=Superman]Manchester Black[spoiler] Didn't see that coming.

Pathfinder Campaign Setting, Companion, Roleplaying Game Subscriber

It was so nice to see Jay, if only for a moment

but why was Red Robin on the cover?

Try to get more people to buy it maybe? I dunno.

Charles,

Yeah it's kind of been my thinking that there's very little reason for Dr M to do the kind of crap he's been doing. It has to be something with greater control. Maybe Time Trapper?

As for Mister Black, I did see an article where he's on the cover of some upcoming issue. But now that I read more about it, it makes sense.
The Elite are, after all, a proactive force.

I have no idea why my PREVIEW came out as a SUBMIT POST?

Just wanted to say that my old Friendly Local Comic Shop is still my shop of choice, and they'll be shipping me my books on a once-monthly basis - which means I'm going to be behind on all the new stuff as it comes out.

Please go right ahead and post spoilers.

I honestly don't care if you do, as long as they're tagged. If I choose to read them, that's on me, not on you for posting.

I want to talk comic books with you nerds, not worry about who did or did not say something. :)

Shadow Lodge

Is the reset key at DC stuck or something? Someone turn the machine off and rub a damp cloth with some rubbing alcohol over the button.
