I've been looking into a trip build for the Hunter since his access to teamwork feats like pack flanking, outflank, coordinated maneuvers, and tandem trip seem like a pretty solid start.
The big issue I see with the build is the inability to get to Large size with the Hunter spell list (enabling you to trip huge opponents). Is there a way to get a Hunter that can reliably increase his size without reaorting to a lot of potions?

Take the Divine Hunter archetype with the growth subdomain.
The Archetype replaces all the teamwork feats that he is liking tho.
You could buy a wand of Enlarge person for your party caster or UMD guy to use on you.
Cloak of the Hedge Wizard- Transmutation can give you Enlarge Person 1/day which is better than nothing.
Also getting things Like Pack flanking, Outflanking, coordinated maneuvers, Greater trip, Paired opportunist, Broken wing Gambit, and menacing Weapons will help. Remember that a Trip can be done in place of an attack (including AoOs) so when you get that massive bonus for AoO you can apply that to your trip attempt. Being Large is great but don't think that it is mandatory as it is not if you have enough Synergy in your feats and items.

He's wanting to be bigger to trip bigger things. as you can only trip one size larger than yourself.
I understand that Chess Pwn but he isn't wanting to trade all those Bonus Teamwork feats for Enlarge.
Not when a Potion costs 50gp. A wand costs 750gp. And adding the effect of the Cloak of the Hedge wizard to his Cloak of Resistance is 3,750gp for a 1/day Enlarge and Expeditious Retreat with an At will Mage Hand. Or you can go about getting a Permanency for as cheap as 2500gp.
I can understand going large to trip a Huge opponent. But you really don't need to be large to trip Large enemies. And I don't feel Going an archetype to just get enlarge person is worth it when you loose so many teamwork feats (that your AC uses too). Also many Huge creatures can Fly or have no legs or multiple legs.

Not enlarge person but you could look atHarder they fall
make sure to teach your AC the 'aid another' trick and get it to aid you and you are good to attempt it against critters all the way up to colossal (good luck!)

I think you can probably get by at low levels at least with potions of enlarge person, or relying on your friendly neighborhood wizard. There aren't that many huge things.
If you take Animal Soul you qualify for animal growth - oh, they errata'd it. Nvm
