urban setting best class?

Advice

Hi there lovely forum members im joining a pathfinder game soon thats gonna be almost strictly urban its the hells rebels adventure path so with that in mind I was wondering what the best class/race combination for an urban campaign?

It really depends on what your doing, but I think using a Roof Runner Rogue would work well. As well as a Urban Ranger would work well to.

Most of the classes have gotten urban archetypes - urban druid, urban barbarian, urban bloodrager, street witch (I think?), etc. I don't think it'll come down to what's the 'best' class, but what you're interested in playing.

(The urban-themed witch archetype is the Alley Witch.)

Hell's Rebels actually has a quite good player's guide, available here, that'll give you all the advice you need to make an appropriate character. Long story short, anything that isn't expressly wilderness-themed (or evil-themed) will work just fine, and classes that give a bonus in urban areas will work especially well.

A campaign with a lot of urban stuff often requires a lot of skill checks. Something with a lot of skills and/or bonuses to them is often handy. Bard, investigator, inquisitor, rogue, ranger, etc.

One point I will make (that the player's guide emphasizes as well) - don't dump Charisma into the floor if you can help it. Not everyone has to go into full party-face mode, but non-negative Charisma and a rank or two into social skills if you can spare them will help a ton. If you have to choose one social skill to put points into, go for Bluff.

Perform (Dance) and Preform (Oratory) might get used depending on the GM. If you lack a bard, make sure someone has enough to score a 10 or 15 if needed.

Sovereign Court

From what I hear, during Hell's Rebels, at least a lot of the time you'll be trying to blend in with crowds, bluff guards searching for the rebels and so forth. That means some classes are not as suitable (paladin, socially inept barbarian with huge hammer, trigger-happy alchemists).

I would recommend a character that can easily be built to be good or at least not a liability socially, while also being good at a few other things, including having something useful to contribute in combat. With that in mind, here are some obvious choices:

* Inquisitor, particularly of Milani (Iomedae's chaotic good sister, goddess of uprisings against evil regimes). Inquisitors get a big load of skills and have several ways to use Wisdom on social skills. And in combat they can be feisty.

* Investigator; with the right choice of extracts you can be effective in combat without carrying obvious weapons. And loooots of skills.

* Bard; some good options for subtle spellcasting, lots of social skills and ways to make everyone in the party more effective. And bards themselves are adequate for fighting.

What you probably want is a class with a good amount of skill points, magic and decent combat. To me the ideal group would include an inquisitor, a bard, and a ranger. The inquisitor gives you divine spells and flexible combat options. If you go archeologist for the bard that covers the role of rogue with some arcane magic and can act as the party face. The ranger brings good combat and scouting skills as well as some minor magic.

Sovereign Court

Slayer is also a fine choice; you don't get all social skills (Diplomacy!), but you do get the ones you need to not be a liability if someone else is the primary face character; you get Bluff, Disguise and Stealth. You also get Knowledge Local and Perception, and enough skill points.

On top of being quite good with skills, you're quite fine in combat as well. Slayer is really a nice uncomplicated, versatile and effective class.

You need in every group a party face, someone that remove status effects, someone to take damage and usually some kind of arcane magic user. There have been several good suggestions in here. I know from personally playing one or with a group with one that slayers, archaeologist bard and inquisitors are all very good/great classes.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The best urban classes have been discussed, but what you really want in Hell's Rebels, that isn't discussed much, is a magic item crafter. There is so much downtime in that AP, and the market is limited.

Street Performer bard is a lot of fun.

Empiricist investigator with the student of philosophy trait is THE skillmonkey and can be a face without needing cha. He is very versatile and can be build to become rather strong in combat after some levels.

Scarab Sages

Urban Druid would work very well. You're a full caster, with great domains you can spontaneously cast from, and at 6th level you get at will Alter Self, which is very good for utility, combat, and intrigue, not to mention a permanent +2 size bonus to STR or DEX.

Scarab Sages

Swashbuckler (Mysterious Avenger)/Bard (Street Performer)

While some swashbucklers fight for queen and country, and others for coin, glory, or just the enhancement of their own reputations, the mysterious avenger fights directly for a cause. Instead of gaining personal glory for her heroic deeds, she keeps her identity hidden in order to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. Weapon finesse with whips

Whether acrobat, troubadour, or thespian, the street performer mixes with the masses, singing for his supper. Bonuses to hiding in a crowd and such.

Grand Lodge

I know what I would like.

Half Orc with Shaman's apprentice, Sacred Tattoo and Fates favored trait. Be a Switch hitter Slayer using a hit Critical rate weapon like a falchion. Cherry pick Favored Terrain talent. Work my way up to Level 7 and making sure I get 6 skill points in Know geography. For my 8th level I would take horizon walker PrC. Take enough levels to get Dimensional Door SLA. Now go back to Slayer for some advance talents so I you can grab Opportunity to give yourself another free attack for when your gang banging a BBEG with your team mates. If your DM permits you should pick up Dimensional agility line of feats so you can be an amazing mobile skirmisher.

You gain lots of skill bonuses from this build coming from different locations and if you gear right its going to be hard to stop you.

Dark Archive

Summoner is always an option. Access to the social skill of your choice is just a trait away, and you'll have the charisma to hold it up. Small sized skill monkey Eidolons can work wonders if you don't want a huge stompy combat monstrosity blowing your cover. Add in useful spells, access to knowledge skills, and Summon Monster to go from Zero to Hero when you're caught off guard and you have a solid package.

Plus, if the GM points you towards Unchained, there are great themes and flavors of Eidolons that can blend or contrast with the nation of Cheliax.

Half Elf gets the first shout out for the fantastic racial favored class bonus, but you can play literally anything and make it work thanks to independant minion stats. Hell, you can roll up a Dwarf and put at least a 13 into Charisma. Nobody expects the Dwarf to start conjuring squadrons of Hound Archons.
