Wall of Fire Question

Rules Questions

The spell says Duration concentration + 1 round/level.

Does this mean that I need to maintain concentration in order to maintain the spell?
Or is it that My concentration Which is 16 is added to my level which is 10 so that the spell lasts 26 rounds?

If I am maintaining my concentration can I cast other spells?

You must maintain concentration. Casting any spell while concentrating on another spell will end the spell you are concentration on.

Quote:

Concentration: The spell lasts as long as you concentrate on it. Concentrating to maintain a spell is a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. Anything that could break your concentration when casting a spell can also break your concentration while you're maintaining one, causing the spell to end. See concentration.

You can't cast a spell while concentrating on another one. Some spells last for a short time after you cease concentrating.

So once I drop my concentration I don't add the +1 round/level?

No, Wall of Fire lasts for 1 round/level after you stop concentrating.

Once you cast wall of fire, the duration is as long as you concentrate on it. Theoretically infinitely long.

Once you stop concentrating on it, the wall of fire remains for an addition 1 round per level of the caster.

I agree it's pretty confusing, and it could be worded differently.

When 'concentration' comes up in a spell duration, it means that the spell lasts lasts as long as you spend a standard action each round keeping it up (and maybe for a few rounds after, such as wall of fire).

When "Concentration" comes up pretty much anywhere else, it means that you have to roll your caster level+ability modifier+concentration bonuses (Like, say, the focused mind trait) and try to beat a DC.

It's a relic from 2nd ed DnD that no one has bothered to fix. Think of the two as 'duration-concentration' and 'casting-concentration' if it helps you keep the two separate in your head.
