Adding spells to a witch's familiar

Hi - I have been reading this up in the forums and am still a bit confused.

I want to add spells to my familiar. If I understand correctly, I need to:

1. Pay an NPC witch for the favour (but how much - the same as a wizard lvl squared x 10 x 1.5 or less because there is no transcription cost).
2. Make a spellcraft check (can this be handwaved with a take 10)?
3. Have a GM sign it off as learned on my most recent chronicle sheet - does it have to be the GM who refs my next game or any passing GM? (I only play PFS at conventions, so don't have a regular GM which would make life easier.)

Can I scribe spells from another PC's spellbook into my own? What about gaining spells via scrolls found during an adventure?[/spoiler:

Players are welcome to exchange spells with each other during an adventure. They must still follow all the normal rules as put forth in the Core Rulebook and their class descriptions (for instance, an alchemist can scribe from a wizard, but not vice-versa) and they must not bog the session down.

Similarly, scrolls found during an adventure can be used to add spells to spellbooks and similar class features (such as a witch's familiar), using the normal rules for doing so. Scrolls used in this way during an adventure do not need to be purchased, but are still consumed as normal.

With either method, the GM should sign off on the spells gained (after witnessing successful skill checks) on affected players' chronicle sheets. All other methods of gaining new spells (such as by gaining a level or purchasing access to an NPC's spellbook) function as described in the Core Rulebook and relevant class descriptions.

In the rare instance of a wizard charging a fee for the privilege of copying spells from their spellbooks, this fee is equal to half the cost to write the spell into a spellbook (see Writing a New Spell into a Spellbook). Rare and unique spells do not change the fee in PFS.

Yes. You can go to the grand lodge in between adventurers, pay half the scribing costs to "borrow" the wise old owl there for a few hours of staring at your familiar teaching it the spell. This option is available for witches

I am not sure, but I believe that witches don't need to pay to scribe spells into the familiar?

You can take 10 on the check

Buying spells is more inventory tracking sheet stuff than DM sign off on stuff so you can probably do it either way. A DM only needs to sign off if you're spell swapping with another wizard/familiar or scroll you turn into a fruit smoothie for your familiar to drink

That's correct, they just use bluetooth or something. You only have to pay (spell level)^2 * 5 (or 2.5gp for a level 0 spell) as the fee to access the other witch's familiar.

I don't think the ITS is relevant, as you're not buying any items. Just track the cost as part of the gold spent on the next chronicle. It's worth making the GM aware at the start of the next session that you've spent some money to learn some spells during your downtime - I usually write it on a post-it note and stick it to my character sheet until I can track the spend on the next chronicle.

I now picture any talking familiar saying "Pairing complete. Familiar one connected. Now downloading..."

BNW: Thanks for finding that link, I *knew* I had a basis for thinking that was the case!

I've spent enough time around dogs that I usually just picture the two familiars sniffing each others' butts to trade spells.

Being more of a cat person, I envision it happening something like this:

Trainee: *Uses cat-stare telepathy to speak to the other cat familiar* My staff sent me to learn really amazing spell from you so I can cram it into that pea brain of hers when she needs it.

Trainer: *Twitches tail slightly* You mean she doesn't realize that we all know that one?

Trainee: *Flattens ears* What part of "pea brain" didn't you get?

Trainer: *Stretches and walks off* Well, don't go back too soon and hold out for double your usual catnip ration before telling her how to cast it.

Still it's funny after playing a certain module (and a really amazing failed save from an opponent) imagining a rather annoyed celestial having to sit down and pair with a pig...
