So I take 1 level of monk, then 6 of fighter. When I hit level 7, I get a second attack, as my BAB allows that.

Up until that point, I've been flurrying, using 2 attacks. I get what would now be my second attack. Can I use 3 on my flurry? Or am I limited to either 2 flurry attacks or 2 normal attacks?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

You would get your normal iterative. For a monk 1 / fighter 6 your bab would be +6. In a flurry, it would be +5/+5/+0

And you're definitely sure about that? I've had my GM and a fellow player tell me otherwise.

Scarab Sages

Absolutely sure. Your GM is free to house rule otherwise, but that's not how the rules work.

the FAQ you linked me to states that I'd be able to get access to a +20 for my BAB, but mentions nothing of Iterative Attacks.

You actually get it at lv 1 monk 5 fighter. Because when you flurry you're bab is 6. In the example you gave your BAB is 7 when you flurry since the monk changes his BAB from his monk levels to be his monk level when he flurries.

Two weapon fighting says, If you wield a second weapon in your off hand, you can get one extra attack per round with that weapon. Flurry lets that second weapon be the first weapon.
So this mean that you make your attack like normal for your BAB and add 1 extra attack.

So basically Flurry is an extra attack (or rather, a series of extra attacks) and isnt a separate thing entirely that requires full follow through of monk to gain any more than a total of 2 attacks?

Scarab Sages

Because that is covered by the rules text of flurry of blows itself.

Quote:

Flurry of Blows (Ex): Starting at 1st level, a monk can make a flurry of blows as a full-attack action. When doing so, he may make on additional attack, taking a -2 penalty on all of his attack rolls, as if using the Two-Weapon Fighting feat. These attacks can be any combination of unarmed strikes and attacks with a monk special weapon (he does not need to use two weapons to use this ability). For the purpose of these attacks, the monk's base attack bonus from his monk class levels is equal to his monk level. For all other purposes, such as qualifying for a feat or a prestige class, the monk uses his normal base attack bonus.

Flurry allows you to make an additonal attack as if using Two Weapon Fighting. So you make your normal attacks and then get one more at full bab, just like with TWF.

It's even in the advancement chart for a monk. At 7th level, a monk's flurry is +5/+5/+0, just like a 7th level full bab class using TWF.

Which is exactly what I'd thought. Thanks

Yes. Flurry is exactly like Two Weapon Fighting. It's just an extra attack.

Flurry is 1 extra attack in addition to what you normally have for your BAB, all attacks at -2, and monk bab changes, potentially raising your BAB to where you have an itterative attack at an addition -5 that you wouldn't have if you did a normal full attack.

At monk lv8 flurry gives you an extra attack, if you never have more than 1 monk level never look at this part.

I think the source of confusion is the wording of when the eighth level stuff says you get 2 attacks. Maybe. Will bring it up tomorrow at our actual session.

Scarab Sages

Again, the 8th level second attack is working like improved two weapon fighting. An 8th level monk has four attacks in a flurry, not two, because those are additional attacks.

Liberty's Edge

Not sure if it is helpful but the Unchained Monk cleans up the whole flurry question and is a full BAB class (meaning it gets a +1 BAB at first level).
