Effective druid levels for purposes of animal companions generally stack, rather than granting multiple companions. So a Hunter 3 / Druid 1 would have one animal companion with level 4 abilities. A Hunter 3 / Ranger 4 would have one animal companion with level 4 abilities (3 from hunter + 1 from ranger) or a level 7 companion if they took Boon Companion.

Levels granting animal companions stack, though you can have multiples with certain archetypes.
There are a couple ways to get your companion to a level higher than you:
Aasimar oracle with mystery that grants pet (Lunar and... Nature?), favored class bonus raises level of pet by one for every six levels.
Huntmaster (Human) feat can add one level to a small selection of animals.
I think Scion of Humanity racial trait for Aasimar can let you use both of these...

There are a number of archetypes that allow you to pick up multiple animal companions as long as your effective druid level is divided between them, such as pack lord.
No, there was an FAQ that states your teamwork feats only apply to a single animal companion.
As for some advice, multiple companions is always ineffective. It's simply more efficient to have one big bad animal companion.

There is a way to snag multiple companions and share multiple teamwork feats among multiple companions; the Packmaster Hunter.
Teamwork Feat (Ex)At 3rd level or any level at which a packmaster would gain a bonus teamwork feat, she can instead increase the number of her animal companions that gain the benefits of her precise companion, woodland stride, and teamwork feats by 1. She can select this ability multiple times.
This ability alters teamwork feats
This is one of the few ways to share teamwork feats to more than one companion at a time.
