As Tengu, how to gain a different FCB

Advice

Sovereign Court

So, I'm building a PFS Tengu natural attack build. My attacks are coming from race (Claw, claw, beak), class (1 level dip White Haired Witch for Hair + Enlarge Person), and later on the Helm of the Mammoth Lord (Gore).

Because none of these attacks are that great on damage, my main levels will be in Warpriest of Apsu for Sacred Weapon. Bite gets the benefit from my deity, claw from free Weapon Focus, and probably hair from 1st level Weapon Focus feat (Power Attack comes in at 3rd).

The problem is, I love the Halfling FCB for Warpriest

Quote:
Add ¼ to the warpriest’s effective level when determining the damage of his sacred weapon.

I know half-X races can take FCBs from their half races, and humans can take Racial Heritage. The problem is, the character is Tengu. For both theme and crunch reasons, that's not changing. Is there any way that, as a Tengu, I can take the Halfling's Warpriest FCB? Traits, feats, anything? Even if it's convoluted, I want to hear (read?) it.

The bad news? There's no way to do that.

The good news? You're not missing anything. Using that FCB, you would, at most, boost your damage by an average of 1. Most levels, not at all.

Sovereign Court

I was really hoping the bad news wasn't the case, even though I knew it probably was...

As for the good news, it's mostly just that Tengu don't have one of their own, and I'd rather have +1 effective level for the build's combat bread and butter than +4hp or +4 skill ranks. Oh well, skill ranks it is. Warpriest and Witch sure aren't getting me any on their own anyways.

Scarab Sages

I find the HP is needed more often on Tengu to make up for that awful con penalty.

Anyway, have you seen the Molthuni arsenal chaplain archetype in the Weapon Master's Handbook? It give weapon training instead of Sacred Weapon growth, which will give you higher overall damage.

Sovereign Court

The damage dice are d3s, a d4 (which I'm still deciding whether to take the hair), and eventually a d8. I'd much rather bump those to d6/8, and d8/2d6 at 4th level, and so on, than weapon training.

What levels does it even give Weapon Training at? I haven't picked up the book, probably won't be till next Thursday.

The Molthuni arsenal champlain still gives you the 1d6 sacred weapon damage; it just doesn't increase it past that.

Sovereign Court

Ah OK. So base SW damage, with standard weapon training like a fighter? Depending on what levels it comes in (and other changes of the archetype of course), that may be worth it.

You gain it at 5th level, and then the bonuses increase as a Fighter. You can also use the Gloves of Dueling to gain +2 to hit and damage on top of that.

what is FCB?

That sounds exactly like a build I've been working on. What Blessings are you getting? Are you doing anything else to get more damage?

I do recommend taking the level in White Haired Witch.

Favored Class Bonus

Scott - Planning Scalykind (AC) and Travel (Mobility). Right now he's a Barbarian 1 do he has 10ft speed increase, but getting rebuilt as Warpriest takes that away and I'll need AC so I can afford not to wear armor. I haven't worked on gear yet really, it's something I'll have to really dive into for details once he finishes his current PbP campaign bringing him to level 2. The only gear he has planned is Amulet of Mighty Fists at 3 unless it comes on a chronicle earlier, and the Mammoth helm at 5.

Imbicatus - I'll have to look at those gloves once I'm nearing that wealth level, I like them.

I'm actually playing around with a gradual level 12 build in my spare time using all fighter levels, spending my bonus feats on boosting damage since BAB is higher already.

The ability scores are tough though I'm thinking (after racial) 16/12/14/12/12/8

I just wish Tengu got Skilled as an alternate trait really. I don't want to be the party skill monkey, but I also don't want to be the opposite.

You should consider Destruction: +1 Damage on ALL your attacks/2 levels. Why do you want to be able to afford to not wear armor? Wear armor! Put Spikes on your armor so your Hair will do Armor Spike damage with every Grapple.

Have you looked into the Weapon Master's book that just came out? There are feats and Weapon Training options that would work wonders for this if you went Fighter. Food for thought

Sovereign Court

I can't do Destruction Scott, I'm worshipping Apsu. As for armor, I'm not going to be grappling, the witch dip is just more natural attacks for me (which is why I'm probably dropping it, in addition to the Int based damage).

The fact that Fighters get full movement in medium, and later heavy, armor is huge. I have a Core Fighter 3 that I completely missed that on. I'm pretty sure I'm dropping Warpriest for Fighter now, it's just a question of how to up my damage best because of those paltry d3s.

I haven't looked at most of the archetypes, but I'm thinking Eldritch Guardian. UMD class skill for Wand of Enlarge Person, a familiar for bonuses to Initiative or AC, and Bravery now gives a bonus to mind control. All I give up that I care about is bonus feat at 1/2, and Intimidate as a class skill (that one's a downside, but not huge)

Sovereign Court

Finally got the WMH book today. Definitely going Fighter, and I'm really hoping the allow the Focused Weapon AWT option. It gives a fighter the sacred weapon die (warpriest level = fighter level) for a single weapon, and AWT Weapon Specialist gives a "Select a Weapon" feat to all that share the weapon group, one feat per Weapon Training +1. Best of all, selecting AWT as a bonus fighter feat doesn't count towards the "Once per 5 fighter levels" limit!
