Let's see:
1) The Russian aircrew was bombing Turkmen anti Assad rebels
2} They strayed over the border and were shot down by Turkish pro Turkmen F-16's
3} The aircrew bailed out and landed amongst the very people they were bombing
4} The Turkmen rebel are not signatories to the Geneva Convention
5] At least one Russian aircrewman was killed by he rebels
Tempers and emotions were running high I'm sure...I think the rebels made a mistake killing the Russian...they should have kept him alive as a bargaining chip

Sadly I can't find the clip from the Daily Show when John Oliver redraws the Middle East maps again.
"There's nothing these primitive peoples love more than a strong, White hand, drawing arbitrary lines......"
"Are you calling me a racist? To call me a racist is to imply that I care enough to hate them!"
Sadly, the comedy might not be far from the truth of how those maps were drawn in the first place.....

As opposed to the one they did capture and keep alive, but who was rescued by a Russian strike team?

This bit also pretty much explains what's going on: The Turkmen rebels are supported by Turkey. Russia's attacking them because Russia's supporting Assad. Turkey seizes the excuse of the border violation to strike the Russian bomber, because it's been attacking their allies.
Any retaliation is likely to continue to fall on the Turkmen rebels, not directly on Turkey, since that would risk confrontation with NATO, which no one wants.
