[Ascension Games] Path of Iron - Discussion / Feedback / FAQ

Product Discussion

This thread is for feedback, discussion, and any questions concerning Path of Iron by Ascension Games.

What I'm looking for:

  • What aspects you enjoyed, and why
  • Parts you did not like, and why
  • Any errors you find
  • Rules clarifications you feel are necessary
  • How the "Path" series of books can be improved going forward

I'm not sure if you plan on keeping the 3 class format, but I think using a "martial, caster, and skilled" format would be nice. That way you can approach the theme from 3 different angles.

Tis sounds weird, but I like that the Archivist does not cast spells. My reasoning for this is that I hate new spell lists with a passion.

I also like techniques based on principle alone. Books like this often outright ignore martials and just gives us new spells and magic so it's nice to see the theme play out with some martial options.

Typo on page 6 within the role section of the Archivist.

I'll have more later when I properly analyze it.

I'm planning on doing three classes each in the next two path books, though I don't want to necessarily limit myself to "martial/skilled/caster". Trying to force a class concept into an unfitting style just for the sake of diversifying focus like that would probably not end well.

Sovereign Court

I put up a review for the product, but I think that I refrained from giving specific suggestions, so I will do so here.

I have to say it again, but the pdf load times are killing me. I really like this book a lot, but I can't figure out why its taking so long to go from page to page.

Balance wise, everything looks amazingly balanced. I'd kill myself providing examples, because there are so many, but you have outdone yourself in making an excellent and airtight book that I would have no problem including at my table, free of doubt or concern.

The spells are really amazing. Field of Blades is one of the greatest 9th level spells, and is exactly as powerful as a 9th level spell should be without being crazy overpowered. Other spells are similarly impressive and dynamic without encroaching on the grounds of current spell lists.

Also, as an aside, this is the book I would use if I was ever to simulate "Full Metal Alchemist". Not sure if that was intentional, but either way, that's amazing.

I think that I liked the Sabboteur the least, maybe because it doesn't suit my playstyle, but it does sound like an interesting concept. I wouldn't say no to letting a player use one, or having one in my party. I think it's a different paradigm than I'm used to playing, if that makes sense.

Admittedly, I did not delve too deeply into all the archetypes for the review, but that is mostly due to the fact that I only went for ones for classes that I play and enjoy, since it was easier to digest them. I intend to go back over them and sit down with the core book (et al) to see how they stack up with the class abilities each archetype replaces, but what I did see was excellent.
