[Legendary Games] Ultimate Armies, wherefore art thou?

Product Discussion

As an avid fan of Legendary Games, I have been closely watching out for their products for some time. Ultimate Armies originally had a tentative release date of June of this year, and then it was changed to when GenCon was running. And yet I have still not seen hide nor hair of it, and even with my powerful searchfu I haven't been able to find any news or updates about it. Does anyone know anything about when it will be out? I'm not mad at Legendary Games or anything since I know delays can happen, I'd just like a bit of information on it.

I'm looking at you, Jason Nelson. :P

I'm hoping we see both Ultimate Armies and that Tournaments books soon myself, as those are two items I am very eagerly waiting for.

Same here. I have scoured both the LG site , these messageboards, and Google in general, but Legendary Games hasn't made any mention of it, which is quite unusual for them. What's going on behind the curtain?

Hello there!

Ultimate Armies, Royal Tournaments, and Fort Scurvy have all finally made their way to the top of my to-do pile. Of the three, Fort Scurvy has gotten the most attention thus far, including some new artwork and new stat blocks, but I'm swapping back and forth with that and UA as I nail down the troop template rules we're using there, since the revised Fort Scurvy will be making use of them. I got some work done on Royal Tournaments in October as well, so all three have been getting some attention, but I didn't have a big enough chunk done of any of the three to feel like I should make a big announcement about it.

I also got distracted with some suggestions people had made for a follow-up to Ultimate Rulership, focusing on either strongholds and castle building or on nobility and noble characters (or perhaps both), so there's been some idea-work there as well.

So, in a nutshell, work is in progress! I'll be taking a long plane trip this week, so I may be able to get a good bit done on the plane. At this point, I'm not sure which of the three will see completion first, but all three long-simmering products will get done if it kills me, hopefully by the end of the year!

Excellent! That all sounds awesome. I eagerly await the outcome!

I remember also there being an idea kicked around about an Ultimate compilation in the future....was wondering if that is still in the works for after the release of the three on the horizon? It probably matters little as our campaign has reached the point of no longer being able to stall before I actually need them...I actually need them, so I will be placing an order in the next couple of weeks for what is already available....but I likes me rules all together when possible...

*cough*I have no idea who would do this*coughcough*

............I may have some responsibility with that.

Glad to hear everything is still going on, I know you're all hard at work and are toiling on the Ultimate Strongholds book. If there's anything I can do for you, just ask and I'll be happy to see what I can manage. After all, I had thought of the name, so it's like we're partners now!...............Right? Right?..........awwwwwwwww.

Excellent news. I'm super excited by all products.

I was wondering if Brandon Hodge had any involvement as far as the troop template is concerned? I believe he created the troop template, and he seemed to have some ideas about potential expansions of it.

In any event, I can't wait to see what you have going on there. The troop template has served me well in the past.

Can't wait for these products. I get disheartened with Legendary annoucing more Mythic stuff... maybe it gets in the way of the 'Ultimates' or maybe it doesn't, and I know some people must like it but.... aaarrrggghh.

Sorry. Got that out my system.

Cheers

I imagine that part of it is to do with broadness of appeal. Kingdom building is something of a niche market, while Mythic is an add-on that can be used in any campaign, so there's a wider audience for Mythic than there is for kingdom building (though I know that those of us with a passion for kingdom building are very vocal).

Jason has to balance sales projections against priority of work, and there's always going to be something that slips down the priority list.

Still, very glad to hear that these products are making progress.

Oh I understand. Sales talk and I'll probably use some of the Mythic stuff myself. It's hard not to be impatient about something your keen on though. Very glad to here things are moving along.

Cheers
Mark

Just posted a quick update over on the Legendary Games website, but I also have a question for all of you:

Which Paizo adventures have mass combat scenarios you'd like to see translated into the premade unit stat blocks section of Ultimate Armies?

This is all great news. Thanks for responding to us here, Mister Nelson.

An excellent question. Kingmaker is the only one I can think of, though that might not be helpful. Otherwise Red Hand of Doom would pose an excellent challenge, though there might be some legal hurdles to that. WOTC wouldn't send people Cease & Desist letters, would they? :P

I forget the exact title, but isn't there a module where the PCs have to drive some Molthuni hobgoblins out of a Nirmathas fort they took over? Tower of the Last Baron is an attempt at avoiding the military option, but it could be worked in there as well with the rebellious count facing off the army of Andoran.

Maybe there could be some blocks for Wrath of the Righteous, I seem to recall some big battles in that AP.

Rasputin Must Die had armies to fight, but they were built as troops. Don't know how useful mass combat rules would be, but given player ingenuity, you never know.

Hi all,

Back from Iceland. I know "Fortress of the Stone Giants" in RotRL has plenty of armies to fight, both in the attack on the town and then later when you arrive at the giants' stronghold.

Any other AP adventures with mass combat-type scenarios? It seems like there was one in Serpent's Skull.

As as been pointed out, "Kingmaker" has several. And I think that there's room for something like mass combat in the final chapter of "Council of Thieves" at a few spots, where you face either gangs of angry thieves or swarms of invading devils.

Part 2 of Wrath of the Righteous has a few, if my memory serves.

Completely Anonymous Suggestions:

Spoiler:

Rise of the Runelords - Definitely the attack on Sandpoint...both for the goblins in "Burnt Offerings" (if you can pull that off at such a low level) and in "Fortress of the Stone Giants"

Curse of the Crimson Throne - Introducing some squads of Hellknight enforcers and Gray Maidens could be useful at various points in this AP.

Kingmaker - You already know that "Blood for Blood" and "War of the River Kings" are definitely in-scope for mass combat.

Serpent's Skull - The big assault on the "Sanctum of the Serpent God" so the PCs can infiltrate the temple and take down Ydersius cries out for a major mass combat playing out in the background.

Carrion Crown - The AP doesn't call for it, but I always thought a Mordor-like battle between a Whispering Way-aligned undead army and a combination of Ustalav/Lastwall forces would be cool. Kind of like a miniature Shining Crusade culminating in "Shadows at Gallowspire."

Jade Regent - There are a handful of places in "Tide of Honor" and "The Empty Throne" where mass combat would make sense.

Skull & Shackles - Mass naval combat for the end-game in "From Hell's Heart" seems like a no-brainer.

Wrath of the Righteous - Definitely needs some mass combat troop engagements for "Sword of Valor" but could be useful throughout the entire AP as add-on material, including the opening chapter given how things go down when the demons launch their surprise attack.

Giantslayer - Has room for some mass combat given the gathering of giant armies. Even the orcs could have a few troops involved in the opening chapter.

Hell's Rebels/Hell's Vengeance - Both of these APs should have ample clashes between government and rebel forces.

But that's just my two cents,
--Neil

I would very much like to see noble families as organizations or small-scale kingdoms (or both, depending on the scale of the campaign).

Is the Ultimate Armies project still alive?

Short version: yes.

Longer version: things happen, Jason is very busy, it's coming, no ETA.
