Vehicles

Advice

I'm looking for a way to optimize vehicles, specifically a heavy chariot. I plan to have two animal companions pulling it (via packlord druid) but I haven't really found a way to mitigate the DC 20 Handle animal check needed to operate the chariot. And theres only two feats which make this easier (Skilled and Expert Driver)

I also find it weird that theres nothing for mounts which pull vehicles (at least nothing I found) Is anyone aware of any classes/archtypes which are built toward vehicles? Maybe something I missed?

Anyone?

Nothing springs to mind, but you could talk to your GM about some feats or class features for riding animals counting toward your chariot character.

Also I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "Nothing for mounts which pull vehicles". Do you mean no rules for what mounts can be used? no rules about how they're used? no equipment for them?

I'll have a peruse through the GM guide, I think that's where I remember reading the most about vehicles? (it's been a while)

So one thing I've found so far. If you prefer Wisdom as your stat for the drive check, you can take the skill: Profession: Driver

Also, if you're using animal companions who have an Int score of 3 or more, you can use Diplomacy or Intimidate.

Quote:

Muscle-propelled vehicles come in two forms: pulled and pushed.

Pulled: This type of propulsion involves one or more creature pulling a vehicle. Unless the creature pulling the vehicle is intelligent (Intelligence score of 3 or higher), either Handle Animal or Profession (driver) is used for the driving check (driver’s choice). Intelligent creatures must be convinced with a Diplomacy check (decrease the driving check by 5 if the creature or creatures have the helpful attitude), or forced with an Intimidate check. Forcing an intelligent creature to pull a vehicle increases the DC by 20. A creature can pull a number of vehicle squares equal to the number of squares in the creature’s space to a top speed equal to twice the creature’s speed. It can accelerate its space in vehicle squares up to its speed. For instance, a single horse takes up 4 squares, and can pull a 4-square cart 100 feet each round with an acceleration of 50 feet.

This means you should be able to use a DC 15 Diplomacy check instead of a DC 20 Handle Animal check since I assume your animal companions have a helpful attitude toward you.

hmmm...
as pointed out, the helpful attitude will lower the DC for drive checks on intelligent creatures, and Animal Companions or Mounts should make that transition as you go up levels.
A lot of your actions as a driver are going to be consumed by driving the vehicle, that lessens your effectiveness as a Nth level character (since you're driving rather than attacking or spellcasting). You might want to hire an NPC to free you up at times.

There's a rogue archetype and some rogue talents which help vehicles. I wouldn't recommend any of them.

If you're a merfolk druid of an archetype which trades out or weakens wild shape (e.g. nature fang; compatible with pack lord), then a chariot might make sense; not being bipedal makes riding an animal directly hard, and there's no way you want to rely on your own land speed.

Thanks for the input all! I didn't notice the lower dc thing, that helps a lot actually. Also I love that merfolk idea, I'll look into it, thanks!
