Interest Check for Giantslayer AP -- All or Mostly Dwarf Party

Recruitment

1 to 50 of 104 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

This is a recruitment for the Giantslayer AP, except you will be sponsored by a clanless dwarf attempting to regain dwarven influence by helping Trunau.

Standard Character Creation Guidelines: Characters will be adult characters built with the 15 point standard buy and of core races as the APs are designed. Characters will have average wealth and max hp at first level. The four characters will fit each of the four ‘traditional’ roles: martial, divine, arcane, and skilled. Google documents will be used for maps, and players will be given access to the map and expected to move their tokens (or give enough detail for me to do so). I will stick to the Giantslayer AP as much as possible, but may move quickly through encounters that do not translate well to the PbP format. AT LEAST THREE OF THE FOUR CHARACTERS WILL BE DWARVES.

This campaign will have a dwarfish flavor. Dwarfish PCs, or PCs with ties to dwarves will have an advantage. This campaign will also have a retro flavor, Core classes will be favored over newer classes, and there will be no guns. The fighter class and the rogue class will be given improvements over the Pathfinder baseline. If you feel these classes are powerful enough without being improved, you may play them as is.

The minimum requirements will be one post a weekday. I will advance the story as quickly as the format will allow and try to avoid ‘doors’ that create too many delays in the action. I will encourage roleplaying to happen AS THE ACTION GOES ON.

Finally, active PbP DMs will be given preference.

This is such a cool idea! Thematic dwarf party. I have been looking at the idea of a Torag-worshipping dwarven character for a while now. Warhammer wielding and very "dwarves are better than all other races" sort of viewpoint. Either fighter or cleric, most likely. Although, unconventional dwarven sorcerer could be fun, if you're open to the Empyreal bloodline?

Edit: Threw together some stuff for Dwardle Thistlebeard, Empyreal Sorcerer (in case you are okay with that idea).

Dwardle:
Dwardle Thistlebeard

Empyreal Sorcerer

Str: 12 +1

Dex: 14 +2

Con: 12 +1

Int: 10 +0

Wis: 18 +4

Cha: 7 -2

Deity: Torag

Feats:

Traits: Defensive strategist (cannot be caught flat-footed), Indomitable faith (+1 to will saves)

SQ: Darkvision, lorekeeper (+2 to knowledge history about dwarves or dwarven enemies), +4 to dodge vs giant subtypes, xenophobic (only speaks dwarven and gets +1 vs fear and mind-affecting spells), weapon proficiencies (battleaxe, heavy pick, warhammer), magic resistant (+2 vs spells, spell-like abilities, and poison)

Backstory: Dwardle was always a timid child. However, things got worse when he saw his father fall in battle fighting a combination of goblins and hobgoblins. At this point, Dwardle developed an inexplicable dislike and distrust of anything and anyone non-dwarven.

This caused Dwardle to retreat from much of society. Even dwarven society. He largely kept to himself just reading. Reading every tome he could find. While some thought he was simply escaping into the reading, Dwardle was actually working to make himself into a weapon. He was studying arcane tomes. He was learning the weapons that other races were using against dwarves so he could turn them back upon them.

Of course, the flip side of this was that Dwardle was doing precious little to learn how to interact in society.

I'd like to throw my hat into the ring with a dwarven ranger you may be familiar with.

I think I'll throw my beard in as a Dwarven Foehammer fighter, it just feels thematic to go Hammer and Shield.

Also, I'm interested in seeing what you've got in store for the Fighter class :)

I would like to throw my hat into the ring. I have been wanting to play this for a while now.

1) GM DevilDoc. Not exactly "prolific" yet but certainly active. I am still getting my feet wet and I have been running games through the Flaxseed Lodge and for friends.

2) Minimum posts are not a problem. I usually get in at least 2 a day/game as necessary. More prolific on the weekends, as my work is mostly computer bound.

3) Thinking maybe a paladin or cleric, depending on party needs.

One question: 15 pt buy? Standard is 20, but I can do that too.. Just making sure.

I am interested, although I am not a GM I'll put in a submission. I been fooling around with a Dwarven bard idea for a while I'll see if it has traction.

Sovereign Court

Intriguing; tempted to pitch a gnome illusionist (old school!). I currently run two pbp games here.

I'll toss a tentative dot on this, possibly with a matronly, lovable dwarven swordmother named Liv Magga. Probably a Stonelord Paladin.

EDIT: I've been GMing for a bit over a year, with my longest currently-running game being Kingmaker. I've also got a homebrew campaign going, as well as a PFS game.

Here is Trawets71's entry.

Could you let us know what improvements you've made to the Fighter and Rogue?

Fighters get an extra BaB every even level.

Rogues get an untyped bonus to stealth and perception equal to their level.

Silver Crusade

Are you allowing unchained rogues (obviously they would NOT have the extra improvement)? And how about background skills?

When are you planning on closing recruitment?

Edit: And are you allowing traits? There seem to be some quite interesting Campaign Traits.

No third party, no unchained, no hero points, no background skills. If you want a drawback by picking an extra trait, I will pick one for you. It will be truly be a drawback (believe it or not, sometimes chosen drawbacks tend not to be real drawbacks).

Some things may not be allowed. No standard action summons of any kind and aid another will always be a standard action. No leadership feat, antagonize feat, slumber hex, or blatant abuse of rage cycling. I haven't found all the holes in Pathfinder, but that covers many of them.

Name: Thak Val Zsing
Race: Male Dwarf
Alignment: CN (NOT the dickish variety)
Class: Ranger (No archetype)
Backstory: Outcast dwarf; more to come
Personality: More to come
Sheet: To come

I'm currently running two PBPs.

Feels like you've had some bad experiences. ;)

Name: Thak Val Zsing
Race: Male Dwarf
Alignment: N
Class: Ranger (No archetype)
Backstory: Out of greed, Thak's father struck a bargain with orcs, allowing them access to a fort protecting Janderhoff in return for gold. He was caught and the orcs stopped before they could take the fort and possibly even threaten Janderhoff. Following clan tradition, Thak's family was exiled from dwarven hearths and lands for two generations. Due to the gravity of his father's crime, the two generations must additionally spend the majority of their lives in Orc-held Belkzen or else their children will never be allowed to re-join their race. Thak grew up a ranger, hacking out a living with his trusty kukri in the town of Trunau. His clan is of giant-killers, and he has inherited a little of their training and skill. His family mostly reside elsewhere in Belkzen.
Personality: Thak finds himself torn between two worlds; on the one hand he dreams of the great dwarven civilization he has only been told of, and wishes for his children to know the glory of their race. On the other hand he has experienced nothing but hardship because of the dwarven punishment, and is tempted to leave Belkzen and begin his own life. For the moment, he holds still in Trunau. Thak is curt, solitary, ferocious in battle, loyal to his few friends, likes his drink a little too much.
Campaign Trait: Roll with It

Very interested! I have been wanting to play an all dwarf party for a long time now! I also enjoy the classic approach. Sounds great!

Thinking of coming up with a divine caster for this...

So, what is the final say on traits...?

I'm thinking of submitting a wizard.

dot!

going to go with a barbarian dwarf, either that or a old dwarven wizard. would unchained barbarian be available?

I am going to dot this a dwarven titan mauler. I will work on him after I get some work done and my wife is at work and might have something posted by this afternoon.

then again, seeing as we have no skill class yet... I may submit a halfling investigator.

Dot.

Silver Crusade

I'm building a Dwarven Forgemaster Cleric (worshipping Torag, of course).

Can I craft items that I start with to get them at a reduced price (assuming that a take 10 is sufficient to meet the Craft DC)?

Are you allowing the crafting of magic items?

I present for consideration, Rask Delvedeep, Dwarven Stonelord Paladin of Torag.

If selected, I can have his alias built up in no time.

I am very interested. I have put together a "rough" crunch for Emmy, female dwarf Transmuter, and her trusted toad familiar named Prince. I am still working on the detailed background.

Emmy is the daughter of a successful dwarven merchant. She was raised, like most dwarves with an battleaxe in hand and an eye for precious gems. Unlike other dwarves, Emmy also had a passion for arcane magic that could not be suppressed. Being the only girl and the gem of her father's eye, she was allowed to study magic with a human wizard. Emmy may not have been his brightest pupil but she is as tough as most fighters and more than willing to "take a tumble" with her battleaxe. Typical of a stubborn dwarf, Emmy refuses to set aside her armor and buckler and this sometimes causes her spells to fail. She figures that she will eventually get the knack of casting in armor.

Lemme know if yer thinkin a' might be the right kinda lass to join yer group!

Hello! I would like to pop in and throw my name in the ring. Been looking at a dwarf rogue idea for a while and I think this will segue nicely. I will have the alias up tomorrow.

While I'm not GMing currently, I am in the recruitment phase, but you already knew that!

Good to have you all. I will make this an official recruitment thread. I may be able to take two groups if my Mummy's Mask Group continues to not post in their thread after I had to go and list all the treasure they collected.

For those of you who don't know me, I have completed N1, The Cult of the Reptile God, on these boards. I have had a group complete B2, the Keep on the Borderlands and almost make it through B7 Rahasia. A group did 'finish' Book 1 of Giantslayer, but didn't want to continue after a TPK in the boss fight. I took a group of mostly DMs through the WGM 1 - Border Watch reflavored in Taldor

I should mention I really like Pathfinder, but believe the Core Rulebook was the height of 'tight' rules. My twelve year old son quickly found a way to break the summoner class, and I don't know how many dervish dancing dex-maxed magi wielding scimitars that cast every flavor of shocking grasp I have seen. Nevertheless, I am trying to expand my horizons and include more content, so I am opening this game up.

Like many on these boards, I have had many games fold due to lack of posting. I made two homebrews, one based on 'The Rangers Apprentice' and one based on 'Mazerunner' and both failed epically due to lack of posting. Currently my action heavy Hallowed Halls of Heroes seems to have four mostly active posters. It is a sad fact that very few PbP games last. As a player, I was lucky to get a lizardman paladin to level 9 in Age of Worms, hopefully the game will resume in the future and I can finish an AP.

And, I owe Dolgrym a spot because he was the last holdout when his dwarf buddies bailed on him and left him alone to fight all the giants besieging Trunau.

So, recruitment will be open until early December. As not much happens over the holidays that is when I will make my selections, the goal will be to start on January 2. Google maps will be used, and players should have access to the maps to move their tokens.

Final party will be five, with at most one nondwarf. I plan to pick two martial characters as Dolgrym has a slot already. For those interested in the arcane position, an empyreal sorcerer is not a bad way to go. It is a good slot for a gnome illusionist, an old school staple, to fill too.

Hey I know you said that you prefer core classes but would you consider a geokineticist (earth kineticist from occult classes)?

I would flavor this dwarf as being 'touched by the spirit of rock itself'.

Just let me know if this is a complete no go from the start or whether he has a chance at making the final cut.

Thanks,

An earth focused kineticis would be appropriate and not discriminated on.

This is Roycilo's Dwarven Rogue submission. I will be working on him off and on the next several days. He will be a trapbreaker, skill-heavy character, less of a combat or social rogue.

5 Cha dwarves are allowed. I have no problems with stats below 8, especially iN 15pt builds.

Do you have a preference between the standard rogue, and the unchained version? They aren't that different, but I want to be sure to build Glorik properly.

Here is a rough idea of Ivan, I haven't decided quite yet what he will be. Either a cleric, fighter, or warpriest most likely. Still refining his back story as well.

You can choose unchained rogue or fighter over my own adjustments.

I give rogues a +1 / level untyped bonus to Perception and stealth and access to black market connections. I give fighters an extra BaB every even level. This makes their first iterative at level 4 rather than 6.

Hey GM,

Please consider Harnar, Stone Caller for inclusion in your game.

The stats are in the alias as well as the fluffy parts, which are also below.

fluffy parts:

APPEARANCE

A rusty red mane in a mohawk style with shaved sides and braided beard frame Harnar’s face. Slightly taller than the common dwarf but not less stockier, Harnar paints an imposing figure. The dwarf has a couple of tattoos, representing the destructive power of rock, are visible on his arms with one creeping towards his neck.
A well-oiled chain shirt covering his grey clothes and his warhammer make up the rest of appearance.

BACKGROUND

Born in to a small mining community in the Mindspin Mountains, rock and stone was all the young dwarf knew growing up. He started working deep underground and in open pit mining at a young age. However, his innate sense of rock strength made him very suitable to work on the mine’s fortification, making sure the tunnels remained open and safe.
From there it was only a simple step to convert to making traps. After all, knowing the innate strength of rock allowed him to either make it safe for mining or very unstable (and easily triggered) as a trap.
Harnar became well known in his village for his craft and led a small team of dwarves. A simple disagreement with the elder dwarf in charge of the village’s fortifications made him want to get some air for a time. The elder dwarf was very meticulous with his stone craft and always berated Harnar for doing a ‘sloppy job’. Harnar would always tell him that he was building traps and not monuments to last centuries. It was time to get a new perspective.
He traveled to different mining outposts along the Mindspin Mountains offering his services. He even visited Trunau a few times and helped them with their fortifications and traps.
It was after one such venture that he returned home to find his village razed. The elaborate traps of the elder dwarf had failed, and it was evident that hill giants had obliterated the village. With nothing left, he parted ways with his crew and went back to Trunau, perhaps he could stay in the village until he figured out what he wanted to do next.

PERSONALITY

Stubborn as a rock and explosive like an avalanche.
Harnar has been described as stubborn and hot-headed but that could probably be said of many young dwarves.
While he certainly has the skill for fine stone work, he lacks the patience needed to craft masterpieces, preferring to do what is right and necessary and then move on to another project.
With his village gone, the dwarf longs to belong to a community again and Trunau seems to be open to host someone with his skills and mind set.
His connection to the rock spirit, as he calls it, is uncanny and the dwarf will at times put his ear to the rock and listen. He knows that he is connected to the rock spirit somehow and can call on it to barrage his enemies. This still has not ceased to amaze him and he can be seen praying to and thanking the rock spirit for its aid.

I'm currently re-reading the Giantslayer Player's Guide to tie Harnar a little bit more to Trunau. I'll probably add a couple of quirks and such to flesh out his personality a bit more as well.

As for me, I am currently playing in three games and DMing two games on these boards.

I easily post more than once a day and live in EST.

Please let me know if you have any questions at this time.

Thanks,

Fabian

Dark Archive

Seriously that no one submitted a Halfling with some skills until now? Lets see, a 'quest' with lots of dwarves that perhaps need a thief, no a burglar!

This is Sim Ambletorn, the luckiest unlucky Halfling in all Golarion!

Sim is no great rogue, nor a fighter, nor a powerful wizard... he is just lucky... but some say that luck is the most powerful thing in the world, like a little guy with a sling killing a giant... or an arrow hitting the ankle of a powerful warrior, his only weak spot!

Or just stumbling upon a magic ring...

Happy Thanksgiving. Many good submissions.

Maybe some of the quality DMs here will get intrigued and want to run a table too? I would love to make a gnome illusionist to journey with his dwarf buddies and provide some actual charisma. I would find it a challenge to fool gullible giants with illusions.

Details aren't written yet, but I just wanted to see if this concept was even workable with the mostly dwarf rules. Finia is a sorcerer (elemental bloodline:earth). To avoid the bleaching, she chose the new experience of living like a dwarf. She found a clan of dwarves and explained her idea to them. She swore a solemn oath to live as if part of their clan for 10 years. They understood that she could not give them longer, or she would die of the bleaching. I'm hoping that I can interlock this back story with another PC if chosen; perhaps they could be her companion from the clan she joined? She has given her clan her full loyalty for the agreed on time.

(arggh, too similar an idea to the GM's own idea... I'm still going to submit it. I had not read the previous post when I started working!)

I'll gladly take your version. It comes down to free Weapon Finesse(and Dex to Damage), which, while great, doesn't fit the character as well as the bonus to skills. It works better with the backstory I have bouncing around in my head, and is more aligned with the skill slot role anyway.

Hm, all dwarf party you say? I was actually part of one before on these boards but much the same as your experience, the campaign died just as we were to start...

I'll have to see if I have time to come up with something for this one. Possibly a barbarian? As much as the boost to fighters is intriguing, I've never seen one have a problem keeping up in pure attack power. The fighter's problem is anything that's not solved by their already solid BAB in my opinion.

I played one of these parties in RotRL.

When it was over, only two of the original party was still standing to kick the Runelord's old butt. It's what happens when your Dwarven transmuted turns into a dragon because the fighter failed a will save then intelligence save for 3 maze spells. Consecutive ones may I add

Most certainly still interested.. and waiting until Jan is no biggie. Hopefully I will have wrapped up some of the games that I am in. I like the ideas you have here, and I am very much interested in finally getting an AP off of the floor.. Glad to find a GM with the same mindset!

Sovereign Court

As threatened, I've whipped up a gnome illusionist. I assume average starting gold?

Tamxander Glenfarrow, gnome illusionist

Thanks for all the good submissions.
After a Thanksgiving holiday and many college football games, I will start consolidating submissions.

I now believe in an extended recruiting given the amount of early drops in my PbP games. My statistics show more than a 25% attrition rate in the first month. I may try two groups of five or one group of six.

I am also curious if you would be up for playing the entire AP, or just the first Book. My last party in Giantslayer was getting bored at the end of Book 1 and went for a Wild Bunch ending. If I have people that just want to complete Book 1, I can put them together in a group.

Please look at the personality types listed below. You can even take a test as your character to see what type they are. I was hoping you would work the personality types into your character background, it may help you flesh them out.

Link to Test

Link to basic personality types

I would like to complete the entire AP if possible. I know that it is an amazing undertaking in itself, and even moreso as a PbP, but I like to finish what I start! I will check out the personality links.

I would also like a long-term committed game but I tend to finish my own APs somewhere 2/3 to 3/4 of the way. I obviously look for a decent closure. The reason being is that I think gameplay gets to be too cumbersome at high levels and even more so with PBP.

That being said, I would be happy to finish the entire AP.

With regards to personality, I guess it's no surprise that every PC has some characteristics of a couple personality types.

Harnar would be a combination of mechanic and doer and executive. His characteristics would be (I've deleted those that don't apply):

- Interested in how and why things work. Excellent skills with mechanical things. Risk-takers who they live for the moment. Usually interested in and talented at extreme sports. Uncomplicated in their desires. Loyal to their peers and to their internal value systems, but not overly concerned with respecting laws and rules if they get in the way of getting something done. Detached and analytical, they excel at finding solutions to practical problems.

- Adaptable, action-oriented. "Doers" who are focused on immediate results. Living in the here-and-now, they're risk-takers who live fast-paced lifestyles. Impatient with long explanations. Extremely loyal to their peers, but not usually respectful of laws and rules if they get in the way of getting things done.

- Assertive and outspoken - they are driven to lead. Excellent ability to understand difficult organizational problems and create solid solutions. Intelligent and well-informed. They value knowledge and competence, and usually have little patience with inefficiency or disorganization.

I'll add a summary of these things to his profile.

I'm really forward to this.

Game on!

I personally do love to finish APs. I am pretty easy-going though, and flexible, so I can work either way. My vote would be to run it to completion though, absolutely.

Glorik is, acoording to the Jung Test,
Extroverted (E) 77% Introverted (I) 23%
Intuitive (N) 61% Sensing (S) 39%
Feeling (F) 85% Thinking (T) 15%
Perceiving (P) 73% Judging (J) 27%

He is ENFP - "Journalist". Uncanny sense of the motivations of others. Life is an exciting drama. 8.1% of total population.

I personally picture him as a Nurturer Personality type as well.

ISFJ - The Nurturer

Quiet, kind, and conscientious. Can be depended on to follow through. Usually puts the needs of others above their own needs. Stable and practical, they value security and traditions. Well-developed sense of space and function. Rich inner world of observations about people. Extremely perceptive of other's feelings. Interested in serving others.

I imagine the truth is somewhere in the middle. Either way, he is the epitome of a team player; not the rogue who steals from the party, but rather the rogue who is there to ensure everyone gets out ok. Not a thrillseeker, but more of the skill version of a bodyguard.

The more I write the character, the more I feel he is Lawful Good.

There is absolutely reason to call me pessimistic, but unsurprisingly I see it as realistic, and would like to aim for getting Book One done with the possibility open to continuing.

I'd rather not do a personality test as in my experience my characters tend to evolve in actual play, so I like to keep a balance of locking down enough details for a consistent character and for the GM to plan, and keeping it open enough that I can vary it later.
