Ok, so I talked it over with my brother, who came up with this game in the first place, and he is totally fine with my sword.
His reasoning: We're already using crazy ass rules, and our items are supposed to be mythic minor artifacts.
Aka, Staff of the Magi, Vesper's Rapier, Book of Infinite Planes, Sphere of Annihilation.
Mythic versions: Fortune's Arrow, Staff of Eldritch Sovereignty, Black Iron Axe, Aegis.
While our signature items do not posses their own mythic power(yet) we are mythic, so mythic minor artifacts can be used as a comparison.
thunderbeard |
Right but... casting level 9 spells at will is definitely major artifact status. Maybe limit it to once per use of bane, or something like that?
Otherwise, I can start adding some bells and whistles to my thing up to some small amount of value (maybe some Time Stop action), but I'm currently still trucking a standard minor artifact.

Could we have a clear post on the new item rules ruling please MG
Just so I can cut and past it into my notes and others have a clear understanding.
Im going with braces of Armor with stuff on.
Still stuck on weapon as she uses none.
My look at something that aids her touch powers.
Would Mythic mind thrust that dos 375 Points of DMG [1/2 on will save DC40+] each time, and that effects anything with a mind, and can blast throw mind block, SR/PR 50+ with near unlimited range be to much, as a signature [weapon] power?
Tiny Coffee Golem |
I have a rough draft for my signature item. It's based off of a Staff of the Magi, but I made sure not to give it any overtly offensive spells.
Also, it may seem powerful, but 1) It's a mythic artifact and as such should be powerful and 2) I can do most of the listed things myself regardless. The staff just makes it slightly easier to keep track of. All of the spells, for example.
A few things on the staff have pre-paid costs that your gut may initially tell you is too powerful. If you were immortal and didn't want to have to worry about finding metric tons of diamond dust all the time you'd do something similar. lol. There are lots and lots of ways to get "free" diamond dust. Blood Money, Blood Money + Magic Jar, robe of components, false focus, etc. I'd prefer to cheese it slightly this way than that way. Again, that's more to save me the trouble of keeping track of such things. Given the artifact level and our relative level I see this as an expensive, but ultimately minor boon.
Further, given the backstory Belgraen has poured his heart and soul into this over the centuries. He made it himself and it should be pretty powerful.
Specifics of this story are left intentionally vague so they can be more fully integrated into the plot.
Even in his centuries of live Belgraen has rarely taken a wife and rarer still fathered a child. However, via epic love story it happened several centuries ago. There's a well known legend, though few know it is true and based on Belgraen's life. Polgara is the first and last child Belgraen ever sired, though before her death she had three children. Their families flourished and multiplied over the centuries, but this is not their story.
Through this joyous union Belgraen fathered a daughter. Her name is Polgara. She grew as many children did while her parents doted on her. She grew into a fine young elven lady with a talent for magics that was encouraged by her father. She grew very powerful and skilled.
One day without warning war came in the form of a swift and needlessly destructive opening salvo (Specifics TBD, but maybe something plot related. World wound maybe?). One of the opening salvos killed Belgraen's wife and Polgara's mother. In their fury and haste they vowed together to make the enemy regret causing such sorrow and chaos.
They were an amazing team, but they were rash. In their sorrow and rage they underestimated an enemy and were poorly prepared. Polgara was near death in such a way as her soul would have been forever lost to the void. Even as he wept cradling her broken body she reached a hand to stroke her fathers cheek and telepathically whisper, "It's ok. I love you."
He would not and could not stand such a loss. As a stop-gap measure Belgraen pulled her soul into a gem. He stored the gem for safety. After that the legend says that every tear he wept for his daughter turned into unrepentant fury and horror as he proceeded to call down all manner of horror upon the enemy until there were no more. Only when he was standing in smoke and ash of the decimated ruins of the enemies final fortification did he allow himself the luxury of rest. He surveyed the field then returned to his daughters soul stone to commune and discuss her wishes.
Over the course of many centuries, sessions, and upgrades Belgraen abided his daughters wishes that she be remade so that she might continue to fight with and protect her father and homeland. He also made sure that she would never be lost to him again.
- Polgara - (Intelligent Mythic Staff of the Magi variant)
The below represents the current stat of the staff, though Polgara has been upgraded over a long time to become what she is today.
Int 20, Wis, 20, Cha 20
Ego: TBD, but really high. It's unlikely to come into play as if she dislikes her wielder, other than Belgraen, she'll simply leave.
All abilities are at CL20
Senses/Abilities: Speech (though she rarely does so), telepathy (touch and Belgraen as Telepathic bond), Blindsense 120'
Polgara has 10 ranks in spell craft
Fly 30' (perfect)
Greater Dispel magic @ will
+2 luck to saves, attack rolls, and skill checks
Staff and Wielder are always under an effect identical to Mind Blank.
True res (Belgraen only) 1/Month
Polgara can hold any number of book-shaped objects in an extra dimensional space similar to a glove of storing. However, she may only put one in or take one out as a full round action. She has the ability to "read" any books thusly stored. Including magical writings via a read magic effect.
The following powers use:
0 Charges: Greater Arcane sight, Emergency Force sphere, Telekinesis, Displacement, Mirror Image, Call Construct
1 Charge: Telepathic bond, Teleport without Error, Heal, Freedom, Greater Prying Eyes, Greater Restoration, Polymorph any object, Foresight, Mass Charm Monster, Freedom of movement
2 Charges: Teleportation circle, Planeshift, Planar adaptation
10 Charges: Wish (prepaid cost), Swift binding (willing. Touch only. See below), Permanency (prepaid cost up to 25K per casting)
Alternate forms - Polgara may change her size and shape into a piece of generally solid jewelry (a cuff, torc, etc) as well as any single hand held non-mechanical weapon, including all forms of bows, but not crossbows or guns. She dislikes any form other than Staff and Bow, however, she sometimes takes other forms in order to blend in. In any form she and her weirder retain all use of her powers and abilities. Further she can change the outward appearance of any such object appearing as different materials or designs.
Wielder of the staff has SR 30. However, if lowered and action is readied it can absorb spell energy and convert it to charges as Staff of the Magi (SOTM).
Unlike a regular SOTM Polgara has 100 charges and she (not the wielder unless she chooses to tell them) always know how many remain.
Retributive strike - as SOTM, but instead of being utterly destroyed the energy of the staff is discoporeates throughout the multiverse. (See Recorpreate)
Swift binding - If Polgara has sufficient charges and a readied action she may use an effect identical to Binding (generally minimum containment) on a willing target touching the staff. The action required to do this is so quick that it may be done in the minuscule moment between when the staff is broken and before the energy is released. The trapped soul counts as part of the staff when discoporeated and reforms unharmed when recorporeated.
Recorpreate - Belgraen, and only Belgraen (or the body his soul inhabits) can, as a full round action, will the dispersed energy of Polgara into any mundane roughly staff shaped object. A branch is typically used. When so recuperated Polgara's energy suffuses the object and transforms it back into her staff self, though with zero charges.
Further, when used as an optional additional focus the staff changes the function of certain spells as below. This functions if the staff casts the spell or the user does;
-Polymorph any Object - Spells that user can mimic are changed as follows: alter self, beast shape IV, elemental body IV, form of the dragon III, giant form II, and plant shape III
-Greater Prying Eyes - Polgara can see through 1 eye as as they go about their scouting, switch eyes as a move action, and can telepathically change the instructions to all eyes as a standard action.
- Magic Jar - Polgara can serve as focus allowing the effect to be permanent until dismissed. Further, if the caster wishes and Polgara agrees, Polgara's soul may take the place of the caster, though this can be risky as if she is destroyed her soul is forever lost.
-Freedom - Polgara can cast this on herself and/or wielder even while imprisoned.
-Telepathic bond - When cast Polgara can choose to include herself in the bond and this does not count towards the maximum number allowed by the spell.
Destruction: To be fully destroyed the staff must be broken in a retributive strike as Polgaras soul is inhabiting another body.
Edit: forgot the destruction description.

I' updating the rules post and reviewing all posts for the last couple weeks.
Regarding your Elan, I like kryzbyn's break down on 11/15, the costs seem more inline with the ARG.
If Lord Rook no longer exists on the material plane, why would he care about anything on the material plane?
Your Nov 15th post of your character does not have the CR cost for mummy, and there are too many class levels listed.
I'm not a fan of players using absolutes in their backgrounds or character profiles, like "never losing a duel..."
Using Sun Wukong as a basis is pretty neat. Trying to mirror him isn't. Pathfinder just won't let you get to that point, like jumping 34k miles in a leap, lifting fighting with a rod that ways almost 9 tons, etc. I have a feeling that even trying to mimic some of his abilities would too narrowly focus you.
Illia asked "how much does it cost to make a sailing ship fly via magic?" This would make a nifty signature item, not the whole ship, just that it flies. If it was a small ship, you could probably get away with the whole thing being your signature item. If you want a cruise liner or battleship, not so likely.
In case you change your mind, you asked about the Samsaran optional Mysic Past Life. Since this replaces another ability, I'd be fine with it costing the same as the replaced ability, 4 RP. It really just gives a minor boost in 1st level spells to select from. It also requires you noting your attribute at 1st level.
In general,
I will be looking closely at circumstance and competence bonuses.
How ABP treats weapons and armor is just plain confusing. There seem to be two contradictory sets of instructions. I've been thinking about what the intent is, which is to automate to-hit and AC, without providing a power boost. Therefore: weapons and armor may not exceed +10 total, just as without ABP. The attunement rules specify how many items these may be applied to.
Without ABP, a player at our level could have 3 weapons with varying abilities for different encounter types. With ABP, they could do this by selecting the attunements they want to use on a mundane weapon.
Is ABP less powerful, the same, or more powerful? It should not be more powerful. Take the example of flame tongue, a +3 weapon. If a character does not use any legendary gifts to increase their enhancement bonus above +5, can the wield the flame tongue as a +1 flametongue (using 3 of their attunement points (AP), for a weapon costing 18715? Or can they wield it as a +3 flametongue, using all 5 of their AP? Can they wield it as a +5 flametongue using all five of theur AP, assuming they already paid for the +2 flaming burst in the weapon itself?
There is an assumption that with ABP you loose half your wealth to pay for getting the ABP.
Option 1 seems to be the most intended as it most closely resembles level based wealth and bonus progression.
Option 2 seems okay as it still doesn't exceed what a character at a specific level would be able to reasonably get without having ABP.
Option 3 is obviously overboard as a character of a specific level would be getting a greater bonus for their wealth than one that did not have ABP.
The way I see it, if you want to wield weapons that are +5 flaming holy keen bane sword (+10), you would need to spend some legendary gifts to be able to use the weapon with more than +5 abilities. If you want to use two weapons at the same time, you would need to potentially buy a lot of legendary weapon bonuses.
One thing I just noticed. ABP doesn't give you the ability to add flaming to a weapon!
Now it starts to make a lot more sense! If the character doesn't buy extra legendary weapon gifts, and they find a vorpal longsword, they can use it as a +1 vorpal longsword, using all 5 of their AP. They can't wield it as a +5 vorpal sword as they have not "paid" for that option with cash/legendary weapon gifts.
Make sense?
From level 17 through 20, the amount of gold that is received at each level increases by $5000 or S10,000 more than the prior level. Just using a $5k increase would result in 25th level being 2.63 million gold. ABP reduces this by half, to 1.315 million. We have 1.2 million plus another 1 million for buildings/similar stuff.

One way is to make the whole thing an animated object then use construct points to give it a fly speed.

Sūn Xíngzhě |
"Using Sun Wukong as a basis is pretty neat. Trying to mirror him isn't. "
Did you read my character's backstory? He is explicitly established to be weaker than Sūn Wùkōng. Sūn Wùkōng exists in pathfinder, see Dragon Empires book, I think. He's a Tian pantheon deity. Sūn Xíngzhě is a diefic illusion, who, due to gods being so powerful, is still pretty mighty in his own strength, though still no challenger to the gods.
So, for example, Compliant Column is not Ruyi Jingu Bang. Ruyi Jingu Bang exists and Sūn Wùkōng wields it. Compliant Column is a lesser copy of it. Compliant Column's method of destruction involves Ruyi Jingu Bang. Compliant Column's weight isn't constant, unlike Ruyi Jingu Bang. It doesn't have the golden bands, thus not looking the same.
Also, Seven League Leap. I could totally fly 32 miles in one leap. It's explicitly in the rules. I wouldn't even have to roll. Wait for me, Mythic rank 6... Wait for me...
Also, when Sūn Xíngzhě maxes out his strength at the cost of other stats, Ruyi Jingu Bang is within his heavy load, so he could carry, but not wield(In any sense other than dropping 9 tons on you, which, admittedly, might be pretty effective), Ruyi Jingu Bang.
fnord72 |
I've read through most of your backstory, at least what was posted through 11/15. Anything more recent isn't fresh in my mind.
I do have an issue with a melee weapon 160' long.
Per the reach rules you would only be able to hit creatures for distances of something like 80'-160' and that is just overboard.
The 6th tier ability allows you to leap half your acrobatics roll, with a 5d% miss chance. We can talk about that when we get to 6th tier.
Illia- |
Also, yeah, making the ship my signature item isn't even close to an option. I'll be going animated object route if I decide to go with it.
~~
Wielding a larger sized weapon doesn't increase your reach, as far as I know. Wielding a Large sized longsword as a medium greatsword doesn't give you the ability to hit people at 10 feet way. As far as I know, the entire song and dance about Compliant Column growing larger, is so that I can throw around over the top descriptions when I attack, or use it as a really long pole for touching stuff from far away.
So, I'd love to have the reference for where you're getting that, so that I can look it up too. Probably has a lot of information about odd sized weapons.
thunderbeard |
@Fnord:
Okay, "No longer exists on the material plane" is more a figure of speech. He doesn't *live* there, but he comes by to visit a few times a year; he fights general existential threats, as well as anything he's divinely commanded to stop.
Also, the Nov 15 post had errors. I fixed them in his alias. He's not an actual templated mummy; I used his extra RP to buy the non-evil mummy abilities, and his race is "Half-Elf Iroran Mummy." And I think the only absolute in his story (might be wrong) is "never successfully killed" but he's missing an arm and a leg (with repercussions to his speed and ability to hold weapons) so I wouldn't call that too absolute.
As per actual reach rules, a colossal staff would only be able to strike targets up to 30' away (maybe 60' with the right feats or if it's a reach weapon). Because of the way a quarterstaff is balanced, you're keeping half of it behind you at all times; the 160' is just flavor.
@Sapphire:
Mythic Mind Thrust is meant to only be used a few times per day (hence costing MP. If your weapon uses your own MP to cast it, it's fine; otherwise it's probably unbalanced.
@TCG:
Minor Artifacts generally don't have ego scores nearly that high.

Monkeygod wrote:Yea, it's definitely more powerful than the staff of the magi. I think I'll need to scale it back a bit. There are no rules, per se, for signature items. More like guidelines:
Would the DMs be open to allowing me to craft a staff, paying appropriate costs from my wealth then add artifact level appropriate abilities to it?
In other words it'd be a single item, but pull resources from both my wealth pool and the more ambiguous "minor artifact equivelant" pool.
Admittedly it needs to be reworked and scaled down a bit, but I like the idea of Polgara. I'd prefer she be my artifact and not just another magic item.

I realize there's a lot to still be done, but its important you guys all have strong ties to Golarion. I believe I had mentioned such earlier, but maybe its been glossed over while trying to build these monstrosities that will be our PCs, or perhaps I wasn't as clear as I could have been.
My suggestion would be to use the 10 minute background except extrapolate as necessary for being a 25th level PC. I would also suggest(if not covered, can't remember) tying your PC to at least 2 of Golarion's organizations.
Davin(My PC) founded/funded the creation of the Eagle Knights, is a member of the Knights of Ozem and is also a Mendevian Crusader. Aka if Iomedae is involved with them, so is Davin.
Also, in case it got lost, we are the heroes, and we will be saving the day As such, its important to remember that just because each of us is a total uber badass who can roflstomp all sorts of enemies on our own, there will be times where we need to come together to face bigger threats. Thus, you need to make sure you're at least a semi team player.

2:She uses Psionics over magic, not liking crude weapons over her PSI powers. Controlling minds is her big weapon, why fight someone when you can change their mind.
3:She is mythic because of the mindstone placed inside her. This stone has yet untuched powers and capability.
4:She has problems relating to none others [Note ELans] but understands pain, hurt and danger to others, often working with others to stop danger. She has empathy its just hard sometimes. She dos run a psionc school of the mind so has some people skills.

A copy of her original mind is still in existence and in the possession of the other Elan council members. It should have been given back to her but it never was.
2:She knows, The Elan council and the Technic League have links. The aim being to kep 'Androff' technology away from being used in Golarion. The is a secret agreement undertaken powers on both worlds. The issue I have always had with fluff is when it gets into mechanics.
While I don't know that Illia's character won't suddenly try to smack someone 160' away, I have seen fluff go bad.
Player says he wants the chain holding his holy symbol to be made of platinum, and that it is just decorative. GM says ok, just fluff. Player writes down platinum chain on character sheet. Six months later player needs some cash, insists on being able to sell the platinum chain written down on sheet.
Another game, another player says he has a silver chain, also for fluff, different game. GM says okay. Months later, fighting werewolves. Player insists he can melt down his silver chain for arrowheads.
I can go on with the examples.
So having a description of 160' but stating it will only be used out to 10' just seems like an issue waiting to happen. Especially if the dimensions can be changed. I also don't know that you could call a weapon that is 160' long large. If you build some language into the uses of the item at various ranges, then I'll be happier. Keep in mind I'll be applying strength and dex penalties to uses the longer you make it.
Thanks for the ten-minute background Sapphire.

Well, according to the rules dappercroc presented, you max out at 30 ft reach. Which, I wasn't expecting, but hey, I'm cool with.
I'd be an absolute idiot if I didn't go into within 5 ft of the enemy because my build absolutely depends on it, but yeah, 30 ft range is cool.
Also, would you like to name a single example that can't be solved by the GM going "Nope. You said it was just for flavor. End of discussion unless you wish to leave the roleplay."
As for the weapon changing sizes, did you read the post it was in, or just skim for 160 ft? 160 ft is the absolute maximum it could reach if I have like, 5 rounds to buff.
Also, if the size scares you, you can just say, "I'd rather you have it maxed at 20 ft, representing Huge Sized, with a 10 ft reach." And I'd be cool with it, because hey, a 20 ft staff is still pretty ballin' and fulfills the fluff fine.
A bit tame for a minor artifact, but I'd be cool with it.
fnord72 |
Just about every AP has at least one outlined.
IF your character is somewhat younger, having completed an AP is also a good fill in for your background, as well as providing a reasonably close tie to someplace in Golarion.
And this site lists quite a few as well.
Please verify your choice as acceptable and a part of this world.

Err... according to RAW, each size increase doubles length. A quarterstaff is described as 5' long (though real quarterstaves can be up to 8'), though it only has a 5' reach. Doubling size four times, we wind up with a staff that's 80-130' long, but the maximum reach for a colossal creature without special feats is 30'.
Which actually makes sense; even if you're real big, maybe it's too hard to it things from more than 30' feet anyway. The extra reach could be used exclusively as, say, an extra-long 10' pole, but explicitly never for attacks.
I already listed a few organizational affiliations for Lord Rook, though he's certainly old enough to have more than one. (Riftwardens, multiple crusader orders, a PFS chapter and that one big Taldor monastery)

Indeed. However, in terms of damage, I'm capable of reaching Colossal+, and the wording of draft on of Compliant Column was that it could reach even that, doubling size 5 times.

I was hoping for this sort of treatment. Anything a normal person couldn't use a ten foot pole for, you couldn't use the max 160' ft range of the compliant column for.
So, no lockpicking, but I could try to poke stuff or knock unattended objects over.

Yeah should probably worry about existing organizations before we make some up. Elan council doesn't officially exist.
Yep but the content from the publisher is allowed and its a key part of Elan Race so hard to not have it in place. Also as the Elan council is a hidden organization, its all a bit mute. As her link is that she just dos thing for them. I also have her linked to two other official groups so I think she is grounded will in the world now.
