sneak attack on person standing up

Rules Questions

Sovereign Court

so I was playing the other night, and was told as the personstanding up I could not use sneak on them, I thought standing up caused AOP, and would allow sneak, am I wrong in this?

2 people marked this as a favorite.

Provoking AoOs do not by themselves allow sneak attack. You would either need to be flanking, or the target would need to be denied its Dex to grant you sneak attack. Unless you have a class feature, feat or a magic weapon that allows more situations for sneak attack to be applied.

There is also the chance the target has Uncanny Dodge class feature, and you weren't high enough level to ignore it.

Standing up would provoke an AoO, but it would not automatically be a sneak attack. The attack would still have to already qualify as a sneak atack; i.e., you are flanking the target.

In other words, being prone does not deny one their Dex to AC, nor does it cause one to be flat footed.

But two people can flank someone prone; being beneath each of them does not provide any protection against flanking.
