I just picked up the new Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide and while I genuinely enjoy it, something confused me.
Amaunator and Lathander appear to be separate deities now. I'm aware that 4e had revealed that the rumors that Lathander was a reincarnation of Amaunator were true, and that following the Spellplague he reassumed his old form.
What changed? Is this discussed in a novel or something?

Th best explanation I can come up with is that they decide that the rumors weren't true after all and they retconned everything that happened during the 4e era.
From what I read on the FR wikia, 4e plot design was done without consulting the major FR authors, and for the transition to 5e, those authors have been tasked to "fix" it. Hence the new sundering.

Amaunator is another "face" of Lathander, and when the Spellplague hit he showed a different side to better deal with all the new threats the church would face AND end the feud within the church. Now that the plague is over, he changed again but clerics and believers of Amaunator still worship that particular side of him.
