Mantle of the Protector - Most overpowered cloak available in PFS, or does it need to be re-attuned after each use?

Mantle of the Protector

Mantle of the Protector wrote:
At the start of each day, the owner of a mantle of the protector may spend 10 minutes attuning the mantle to his armor and shield. He may then lend his attuned mantle to an ally, who can activate it as an immediate action at any time to gain the owner's armor and shield bonus as well as any other special properties the armor may have for 10 minutes. When the mantle is activated this way, the owner's armor and shield go dormant, and he loses any benefits they may provide for 1 minute.

Is this item supposed to be usable all day long at will, or am I missing something in the text?

Can my wizard from get a lyrakien familiar, deck him out in a tiny full plate and tower shield, cast alter self on the familiar to make him medium-sized for 10 minutes and have the familiar spend the 10 minutes attuning the cloak, then let my wizard wear it and use it every 10 minutes to get +13 AC all day long while keeping the familiar in a familiar pouch out of the way of harm?

This is going to be for a PFS wizard, so please no comments about how you would house-rule it. Should this item be banned from PFS until a usage limitation is imposed? Because if it is not, I know what my level 11 wizard's next item is going to be.

It sounds like it can only be attuned once per day. Once it has been attuned you can activate the attunement for 10 minutes of protection. I assume that would use up the attunement, and it would need to be reattuned which has to wait for the next morning.

But yes, it could certainly use a clarification. However, that clarification is only going to come in the rules forum.

By the way, you asked in the rules forum, and everyone there pretty much told you it was once a day.

Oh I never disputed that it was intended to be once a day. In fact, I suggest it myself!

But I have yet to see a convincing demonstration from the text that says it is limited to one use per day.

Yeah nothing PFS specific about this one, but after reading it the only thing I can say with certainty is expect table variation. The item lack a clear limit, but GMs can make reasonable limits when an item or ability is missing that information.

In any case, if you want a PFS ruling, that prevents familiars from using weapons and armor ASAP, this thread is good way to accomplish that.

I advise against it, but consider that you can't war your cloak of protection while you wear this cloak.

Actually, someone on the other thread provided me an answer from the PFS FAQ that was precisely what I needed to know.

An immediate action that lasted 10 minutes would be pointlessly different from permanent or all day if it recharged without re attunment. So, only works once.

The opportunity cost of not wearing a cloak of protection is also something to consider. Even if you consider this powerful, your saves are going to suffer.

Just an FYI: Armor for unusual creatures states that creatures of size Tiny or smaller divide the armor bonus by 2 from armor and shields.

Still a nice AC boost for your wizard, but the bonus to AC would be 6, not 13, unless your familiar was altered to size Small or larger at the time you activated the immediate action.

I feel there are far better boosts to your AC though... Mage Armor and Shield come to mind.
