Determining distance

Rules Questions

When determining distance for ranged based attacks:
Do you measure space from the two closest faces of opponents?
-- or --
From the center of each opponents space?
For example, a medium sized creature attempts to hit a large creature with a magic missile. There is currently 8 squares separating them.
Would the range be 40ft or 45ft?

Grand Lodge

Centre to centre. Apart from anything else the Medium creature is probably not standing right at the front edge of its 5' square.

You count your target square, not just the spaces between them. so the square right next to you is 1 square away - keep counting from there.

Does that include large+ creatures, as in do you count the the center of their space, or just the closest 5' square?

Sovereign Court

Any square of the larger creature will do. You don't have to shoot them in the butt, the face will do.

The same could be said of a Large or bigger creature... they may not necessarily be in the the front 5ft squares of their space either.
