Recruiting Gestalt Mythic Cult of the Ebon Destroyers

Cult of the Ebon Destroyers

Taking place on the Island-Nation of Jalmeray, The Cult of the Ebon Destroyers is an adventure that features an investigation into and hopeful defeat of an insidious cult bent on corrupting and controlling the nation from within. Since the "questgiver" is looking for someone outside of Jalmeray's culture, PC should not be natives of that nation.

The adventure starts in the city of Niswan during the celebration of Yolarati, the traditional Vudrani Festival of Colors.

The adventure will be modified to incorporate Mythic and Gestalt components.

Character Crunch

Stat Array: 16/16/16/14/14/12
Level: 6, Gestalt; One side of gestalt has to be an Occult class. Multiclassing on the other side is OK.
Mythic: 2 Tiers, Legendary Games Mythic content allowed.
Starting Gear: 24,000gp; Crafting: You can use 6,000gp of your starting wealth to craft per crafting feat.

Character Fluff

Submissions should include a physical and personal description, as well as a brief background, to include the reason your character travelled to Jalmeray. This reason should be some business that has recently been concluded; tell me what you came to Jalmeray for and how that turned out for you. It is not necessary to explain how you became Mythic, but it is also not a bad idea.

Deadlines and Details

I will be taking submissions up to 11/6. I will be selecting 4-5 characters.

Expected post rate is minimally once per weekday. Standard pbp courtesy is expected and will be extended regarding inability to post, but repeated and/or unexpected absences could result in replacement
.

ah this does clear up a few things, i have the basics done. I will need to actually write up a reason for being in Jalmeray as well as a physical description.

as for the backstory here ya go

Backstory:

He wasn't always the Prince of Thieves, He used to be just a nobleman's child. Scipio Le Valiere, the son of Catarina and Massimo Valiere. The child was made to study his entire life in order to inherit the family business of trade, one must have knowledge of all things to be a great business man after all. Engineering and Mechanics were among his favorite things to study .

Young Scipio grew bored of his responsibilities and lost childhood, and when he came of age he sneak out at night and take on his other persona The Prince of Thieves. The Prince would steal from the rich, being involved in his father trade business he often knew who was in town. The money, he would give to orphans and poor children; whether purposeful or not he despised adults. Eventually he became rather well known among the people as the uncatchable thief, who lead a group of child thieves. Although truth be told he never lead anyone, there was no group just him.

This act of rebellion did not come out of no where, the young Scipio had the spirit of a legendary thief attached to his own. Unbeknownst to him that is were his Talents came from, with those talents came other thing. As the Prince, young Scipio became brash, constantly looking for a challenge. As different as the two soul were, they shared a similar love for the sky and for freedom.

The point came when Scipio eventually spent more time among the outcasts and street urchins as the Prince, than he did studying. His parents became more and more suspicious as to the where abouts of their son until eventually they had him followed. That night when he came home, his parent confronted him. Scipio having been found out ran away, worried that his new found freedom would be taken away.

As he ran out of the city, He collapsed his eyes racked with pain. He woke up, his vision clouded. he could no longer see the sky he loved, but he felt as if the connection was stronger than ever. The young Scipio began embraced the his Prince Persona, slowly becoming the legendary thief that was housed in his soul.

Dotting for lots of interest... I don't have any 3pp resources (or familiarity) so I'll be limited in those options, but I'm sure I can get excited about something pure paizo...

Now I just need to figure out which occult class I want to try out...

Out of curiosity, what are you using from Unchained? Are any of the base classes allowed (or required)? What about sub-systems like stamina and skill unlocks?

Liberty's Edge

Pathfinder Adventure Path, Lost Omens, Rulebook Subscriber

The Unchained classes will be allowed. I don't think I'll be using anything else from Unchained for this campaign, although I will look into the skill unlocks as they relate to the Unchained Rogue at 6th level.

Skill unlocks are fairly easy to understand and not really all that overpowered. it gives the unchained rogue a little more utility, even though it doesnt apply to my character i'd still recommend using that and the background skills system as they help with roleplaying and give characters a little more to them outside of just mechanics and dungeon crawling

I'm very interested... I'll work on getting up a Halfling Kineticist/Unchained Rogue written up!

*crashes through the door*

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Alright, I'm not ready to commit yet but I'm leaning towards an unchained monk/medium

Grand Lodge

Hmmm I know an occultist is in my future but to pair with what? maybe a Rogue tengu style

Dark Archive

What is your though about the Elemental Affinity ability of the elemental races working with a kineticist?

Sir Longears wrote:

I am also interested in knowing that.

I was thinking about a Sylph Aerokineticist just for flavor, so it'd be useful to know if there might be some crunch to consider.

Okay, I think I'll be submitting the most unusual gestalt combination: Medium/Bard. No full casting or complementary BAB/saves/HD whatsoever. Oh yes. Goal is to be mostly DPS, with some buffs and debuffs.

Potentially going mythic marshal with bodyguard shenanigans, though that might be too extreme. Otherwise trickster.

Personality-wise, thinking an evangelist of either Sun Wukong or Cayden Cailean; the character would be a constant fountain of combat tricks, chaos, and merriment. Hopefully not too silly for the campaign premise.

Dot. It will be fascinating to see how this turns out.

Hmm. Do standard restrictions on % of character wealth going to items apply, or could I start out spending 16k on a +4 Headband?

I'm thinking "something"/Mystic.

Leaning towards spirtualist but kineticist and mesmerist are not without there charms.

Figured I'd ask since you called out Legendary's Mythic stuff as OK, is Mythic Psionics from DSP OK too, or just the standard psionics stuff?

hrm, second question: would you count a kineticist's blast as a weapon group if i rolled a Marksman/Kineticist? The ranged synergies sounds really appealing, especially with Sniper Style.

Settled on Spirtualist/Mystic dwarf a bit too much in touch with his ancestors.

DeviousDevious wrote:

"Kinetic blasts count as a type of weapon for the purpose of feats such as Weapon Focus"

Dot for interest. I've been meaning to explore Occult classes, and this would give me an amazing excuse to learn them. From what I've been reading at work today, I'm interested in a Gnome uRogue 6/Occultist 6/Mythic ?? based on an old character from a decade ago, loosely based on this Alias. Is this something you'd be OK with? If you would rather I come up with something new, I'd more likely make something with a Dreamscarred Psionics class on one side.

I already can see for an Occultist Abjuration focus item, a non-magic amulet that is a leather pouch containing the cleaned finger bones of a thief that got his hand cut off by a box trap. Given the complexity of the crunch, I will attempt to keep the fluff relatively brief per your request.

Reason for being in Jalamary:
Roonie was commissioned to install several traps in a Noble's villa elsewhere on the island, and after six months of retrofitting a few structures, the grounds and building are more secure in a nonlethal fashion, and a secure vault has several lethal additions as well as an additional secret escape route from the Nobles sitting room, with traps that can be activated to slow down pursuit. The business was concluded happily and successfully for both parties, with Roonie receiving payment in kind of a Headband of Intellect containing Knowledge: Local for his work that I'll write up as an Implement for Divination. Nobleman was intentionally left vague so it can be happily slotted on a portion of the island we won't be dealing with.

RPG Superstar 2012 Top 32

Ok, after reading up more on the occult classes, I'm going to try to find enough time to build an unchained monk/spiritualist (instead of medium).

Dark Archive

I would like to submit Kaolin Stonecore. He is a oread geokineticist/uc monk with the Champion Mythic path.

Any feedback or opinion about his build is more than welcome!

So I gave some thought as to why Scipio would be in Jalmeray so Here it is.

Reason for being in Jalmeray:

Being the Prince of thieves and the curious sort his reason for being in the area is two fold. one to see and join in the festival of colors because to him it would be interesting and fun. The Second reason is festivals are usually big events that attract nobles, the rich all people he can "relieve" of some of their gold and give as gifts to Local orphans and make some money himself.

Also his Appearance and personality, these are all also in his profile/Alias for easy access.

Appearance and Personality:

Scipio is a young man with Grey eyes and blonde hair tied back, light stubble he keeps shaven and clean. his normal attire consists of a quilted white shirt which doubles as his armor and a fitted leather vest and leather boots.

As the Prince his attire is similar except he bears a storm grey cloak and wears a mask like this one click here His normal attire is is tinted green by a wispy ectoplasmic armor.

Scipio himself is a kind, intelligent, young man. Free Spirited, he he has no permanent home And is often traveling, staying in town only as long as wants. His kind heart leads him to helping people who he thinks deserves help, although he is harsher with the judgement of adults than children due to his bad relationship with his parents.

As the Prince he becomes confident and mysterious, this is both accidental and purposeful. As part of this personality is the spirit of the legendary thief that is housed in his soul. He becomes far more focused as the Prince and will do anything to accomplish his mission whatever it be.

Alright, I'm curious. I have a character named Friar Fatling that I could adapt and expand for this.
Mechanically he would be a Halfling Aegis (Aberrant)/Psychic (Mutation Mind, Faith Discipline).
He will have the obese customization and be a short, fat Cleric for the deity of purity (while secretly struggling with his own body and its corruption and mutation). He would be a good front liner, massive hps and good backup spells and buffs.
Oh ya, guardian mythic path with the fast healing ability. He will need it :)
The combo does have a fair bit of overlap (enhancement/resistance bonuses for instance) that won't stack, and I will have to re-read the casting in Melee range section again, but I think I can make it work :)

However I have not played with the occult classes before so I have a few questions.
1: spells. The Psychic has his own spell list (at the very bottom) but it seems very limited. For instance, the psychic gets 7 knacks but there are only 3 listed, and there's no buffs :(
Is the psychic supposed to use the wizard spell list as well or something?
2: can a psychic cast spells in armour? Is there any ASF? (I would assume no).

That list you linked to is only the new spells in Occult Adventures. The spell list you want is right here.

2. There is no ASF for psychic spells, you are correct.

it counts as 'a weapon group', but I think it's worth getting gm-approval before making the assumption that it's legit for a Marksman.

How would you feel about a Fetchling character? If you feel the race's mechanics are overtuned for this campaign I'd be willing to give up the SLA, I mainly want the flavor of the race.

Hmm, this seems fascinating, but I need to research the Occult classes before putting forth a submission.

Not quite. It counts as a "weapon." The "Weapon Group" refers to a specific ability that the fighter and marksman have (and even then, it is different from each other).

But the rule also states that the GM can create additional groups :) not like he couldn't already.

I'm slowly working on the crunch for my unchained monk/spiritualist. If you don't mind I'm going to re-use a profile from a defunct game (only the name and avatar- everything else will be changed)?

background:
My brother, Varcellius, and I were joined at the hip. We're twins, you see, and when I say 'joined at the hip' I don't just mean that we spent all our time together, though we did, but we were literally joined at the hip when we were born. Separating flesh and bone is a fairly routine matter- a few slices of a well sharpened knife and a couple cure spells and we were two distinct bodies. Separating spirits, it turns out, is a more complicated matter. Varcellius was never right after the procedure... his spirit was stretched... bound both to his flesh and my spirit, it was constantly being pulled in two different directions. He quickly grew weak any time we weren't within a few feet of each other.

We were divided at about 2 years and by the time we were 5 his body failed him. Our parents were devastated. When they found me talking and laughing with him in our room they thought it a sad phase- a child's way of coping, or a failure to understand reality. When I never 'outgrew' it they became concerned and forbade me from speaking to him while others were present.

My mother came in one day and found us playing together... she screamed and ran to find my father. We were nine and had learned how he could manifest visibly. When my parents discovered that it was not some game but that the connection of our spirits had allowed us to stay together they were alarmed. Seeing us together was more than they could handle and they had other children they were afraid to let us near. There was a wandering mystic passing through at the time and they begged him to take us. The kind old man took pity on us and took us on as an apprentice.

We traveled with him for many years, from our home in Chelliax all the way to Jalmeray. He taught us discipline and the martial arts of Tian Xia, and though he did not understand our special bond always said that it gaves us great strength. A week ago he told us that age was catching up to him. He meditated for a day then called us in to bare room heavy with incense. He laid his hand on us and imparted us a piece of his mystic power as he passed into the next life. He last wish was that we bring his body to the Yolarti festival in Niswan for its pyre. We did as he asked, and now find ourselves in the midst of the celebration with no plan for what to do now...

RE: Elemental Affinity
I think we need alternate racial traits.
[Element] Bending: A [race] kineticist who takes [element] as his elemental focus increases the DC of his infusions by 1. Additionally, once per day, he can reduce the burn of an infusion by 1 (minimum 0) as a free action.

RE: Skill Unlocks
Skill unlocks are ok, both from Unchained and Occult Adventures.

RE: Background Skills
Will not be using these.

RE: Wealth Restrictions
Let's say maximum item value is 12,000gp

RE: Mythic Psionics
As long as you can provide a link, DSP material is fine.

RE: Kinetic Blast Weapon Group
Blasts that have not been modified by form infusions and ray spells/spell-like abilities are now part of a Weapon Group we'll call "Blasts and Rays".

RE: Fetchling and other races
I'd prefer if we just stick to the listed races, classes, etc. Plenty of choices there.

RE: Updating Characters
I'm ok with people updating old characters, as long as they fall into all the character creation rules.

The alternate racial trait above would replace elemental affinity racial traits, if that wasn't obvious

Dark Archive

Any thoughts about Kaolin or any red flags?

In the end decided to take another racial trait instead of elemental affinity (crystalline form).

Been having an extremely busy work week... I will work on wrapping up my character on Sunday, hopefully. Here's what I've got done so far!

Thank you for your positive response! I'll get on to stripping Roonie down, and rebuilding him to your specifications. While I waited, I considered an alternative build based on Carrack here, but after careful consideration, I've drawn the conclusion that he would have way too much synergy with Occultist, and would be too self sufficient and might be a bit more over powered than you (or most DM's) are looking for.

A few more questions, the first one general.

Did I miss them, or do the Occult classes not have FCB?

Also, would it be permissible to reflavor a feat with religious ties?

Butterfly's Sting has Desna as a requirement. Would it be possible to reflavor it as Wasp's Sting, with ties to Callistria? While either Diety would fit, I think Callistria fits a tiny bit more, on her vengeance aspect.

Additional question: What is your feeling on the feat Breadth of Experience? As a Gnome, 100 years falls into Middle Age. Would it be permissible to handwave the stat adjustments so that they fall PRIOR to the stats you have listed? ie, a 16 stays a 16, instead of shifting to a 17, or 15 depending on what it is?

Liberty's Edge

Mindblade magus:
A normal magus can take the arcana Ghost blade, that at the cost of 1 extra arcana point add the brillant energy or ghost touch abilities to the list his weapon potential abilities.
The minblade get his arcana points back when he dismiss the weapon.
He would get that extra point back or not?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Why would you ever not want to be middle-aged, as a character focused on knowledge/profession?

As someone playing a mindblade magus in a different game, I think that you'd only get the points for the weapon back, as the point for the enhancement was a separate ability.

Liberty's Edge

Seem logic, but it is fuzzy enough.

BTW, it don't give you the enhancement, it only allow it to pay for it with the regular points. Way less interesting than for a regular magus.

Some other question for the GM.

1) What will be the starting age? The background I am making has my character wandering a from Varisia to Jalmeray, visiting a lot of nations and studying occult powers in several of them. That would require years, so starting at the standard age seem off.

2) You will use the artistic skill from unchained, even without the background skills? I would like, for my character, to be able to draw some good picture of the location she visited.

How do we feel about cooperative LE characters >.>?

Did I miss them, or do the Occult classes not have FCB?

Pages 84-85 of Occult Adventures has FCB by race for the core races

Also, would it be permissible to reflavor a feat with religious ties?

I am ok with reflavoring the feat into a Callistrian Feat.

I agree with the assessment that the extra point is being used to add options, not to create the blade, therefore you would not regain this extra point.

Characters can pick any starting age within their racial limits. However, do not make any stat adjustments for age. As Roonfizzle suggested, assume the stat array already includes adjustments for age. Call it the Ezren effect, if you want.

2) You will use the artistic skill from unchained, even without the background skills? I would like, for my character, to be able to draw some good picture of the location she visited.

Use Craft (Other: Drawing) rather than Artistry for this.

(Using Imperial "We" here),We feel that they will need to have a compelling reason to cooperate with the authorities in stopping the cult, rather than joining/ruling it, built into their background to be considered.

2) There is a Craft (painting) skill, that should work, I think. it should include all forms of painting.

Yes, as long as you follow the rules for doing so.

Will we be obtaining any additional Mythic tiers throughout the game? I am curious to this as it will likely affect which feats I plan to take right now.

Also, random question about Jalmeray... I don't know that it is mentioned anyway, but I'm going to look through my Inner Sea Guide when I get home, does Jalmeray have any form of slavery? (Indentured Servitude, traditionally slavery, etc?) This would be relevant to why my character would be in Jalmeray.
