Rise of the Runelords Sorcerer Bloodline

Advice

We are starting RotRL as a party of a cleric (who channels negative and plans to control undead), a bard, a ranger, and I am a sorcerer. Human found on mysterious island. Starchild/Lovecraftian feel with some seriousness and no real sense of boundaries. Worships Desna in a deeply personal way.

I think I should be as versatile as possible, able to do damage and bf control. Hard to do a ton of utility, but perhaps with scrolls and wands eventual.

Stats: STR: 7; DEX: 10; CON: 12; WIS: 10; CHA: 20

Right now I am aberrant bloodline for flavor; and a pretty solid spellist. Any other bloodlines that people suggest; that would be a strong fit in RotRL?

^Impossible.

  • Arcane (maybe Sage Wildblood) is always a good fit and I think it would fit Runelords even better.
  • Fey is also very good for a foundling and has some very nice ablities and spells.
  • Starsoul works nicely for the Lovecraft flavor, has a very solid spell list, good feats and adds an (admittedly very minor) debuff to your Evocation damage spells.

Also, use your Favored Class Bonus to expend your spells known list for more versatility.

Sage is awesome in general, and better in RotRL. There are a lot of knowledge check to do about thassilonian stuff. Can be the party face with the traits that change Diplo and bluff to int.

I played as a sage once, and it was nice. However, this is a great AP to play as a Wizard, if you don't mind chsnging your class.

Or an Arcanist.

Or a Magus.
Or an Alchemist.
Or an Investigator.

Don't want to spoil, but wizards get some wizard-only stuff.

I'm a Sorc and I can use some of that "Wizard-only" Stuff. You just need the right investment with some of it, but these items are more useful in the hands of a Wizard.

Also, for a bloodlines, Starsoul, Dreamspun, Harrow, Impossible, Arcane. These are all I can think of, at the moment, to fit that Lovecraft feel without getting into classic horror.

I'd go human arcane for the extra spells to broaden your utility.

I have a soft spot for the Visionary wildblooded version of the dreamspun which is seriously underrated in my opinion, especially if you focus on sleep/enchantment, check it out and ask yourself whether your rest periods are likely to be interrupted.

Aberrant is a solid choice if you think you are going to want to deliver touch spells a lot; there is a lot of stuff you don't want to get too close too for sure.

You have a bard. So there is not a lack of knowledge skills for the group.

Your back story strongly suggests Destined if you are going for flavor. It is just Fated is so 'meh'. Celestial would fit pretty good as well.

Protean and Starsoul are solid choices.

Shadow is nice if you are going human.

It is a fun AP, enjoy!

Arcane is very nice, and the Wildblooded variant is also very nice. I've just finished Kingmaker with that bloodline with some of the same desires for utility and versatility so I have a couple pointers for you. Shadow bloodline is good for the rest of my advice as well.

Illusion spells are pretty amazing, and fit into Desna's flavor pretty good. Starting off with Color Spray would be very useful in this campaign. You can possibly take your second level as a Heaven's Oracle dip, just for Awesome Display, and it should keep you dangerous until level 8 or so when you can pick up Shadow Conjuration. At this point, Awesome Display starts to lose it's effectiveness, and retraining that level in Oracle back into sorcerer becomes more and more enticing.

Shadow Conjuration is an extremely versatile spell and well worth investing in. There's even a guide. I've found it to remain useful for pretty much the entire campaign, except I did find trouble against undead, but since your cleric is into that, you should be fine.

For Versatility, nothing beats the Mnemonic Vestment. Although that dip in Oracle will allow you to use all scrolls and wands from the cleric list until your UMD is high enough to not need that help anymore. Grab a few extra scrolls and grab a bunch of spells you would use probably only a handful of times in the campaign. I liked using it for things like tongues, remove curse and blindness, heal (for emergencies), control construct and the like. Later on you'll want to switch to the Robes of Arcane Heritage, or talk to your crafter and combine the two for a bit extra.

Later on, Limited Wish is a good option for versatility if you can afford it. I was able to get approval for Blood Money, and used it to cast whatever spell was necessary. Without this, Greater Shadow Conjuration is a good bet, as you can summon shadow creatures that can cast spells with it. You'll have to do your homework to figure out what creatures cast what spells, but you'll soon be able to work out your favorites. Picking up Summon Monster 6-8 may also be useful for extra spell casting possibilities, if you find room in your known list.

Now my particular sorcerer also used a lot of Transmutation spells, but that was just personal choice. You'll want to fill out the rest of your list with spells that fill in where you lack. Don't forget to pick up Persistent Spell so you can make those saves even harder.

All that aside, wizards and arcanists really would shine in this AP, and having the ability to have high intelligence and some decent knowledge skills can get you far. But I have a soft spot for Sorcerers, and I thought I'd give you what advice I could.

Since RotR takes place in Varisa, you're probably going to be either Varisian, Shoanti, or Chelaxian.

If you're Varisian, the Arcane bloodline with the Tattooed Sorcerer archetype, and the Harrowed bloodline stand out as being particularly appropriate.

If you're Chelaxian, the Infernal bloodline is the obvious choice.

If you're Shoanti, the Dreamspun and Destined seem most appropriate.

Also, you'll be near Kaer Maga, so Bloatmage is an eventual option if you're into that sort of thing.

Ask your DM if you can Be a Sage sorcerer. Ask if you can keep the familiar and drop the Cruddy 1st level power of Arcane Bolt. Its a reasonable request.

I believe you will want the Int for Knowledge checks as well as many of the "wizard" items can be easily adapted to a Int Sorcerer.

There is going to be a few Constructs during the AP and a hand full of Undead smatterings in every book. The main saves you will want to focus on are Will and Reflex. Having 1 or 2 target fort is fine but from book 3+ Fortitude saves become very hard to target. So it is best to use spells that have a effect even on a save like Ray of Enfeeblement. (If that kind of Spell is even your thing)

Pits will serve you well for most the AP as there is only a handful of things that fly during the first 4 books.

When I played Glitterdust was a workhorse in the early game. I played a Gluttony wizard till he died to GM aggravation. Then rolled a Time Slumber witch who dominated most the game. A Domination style character will have lots of Humanoids to target and control so those spells can shine. I know I abused Dominate, Suggestions, slumber hex, and Magic Jar. Turning his Critters into my Critters.

Going ahead and spoilering, the Runelords were high level wizards. That should give you a hint of what's ahead.

I did quiet enjoy those items. I also enjoyed upgrading those Items with my craft feats. But a few of those Wizard items are "Evil" items...but you can easily sell for 50% and craft the replacement.

Also you will get up to level 17 before the final boss. Having 9th level spells does make a huge difference when doing a Wizard/Mage fight.

It is not necessary, however having access to Time Stop and/or Wish, will be a great benefit to you.

Not sure how familiar you are with RotRL...
But I can see either Ectoplasm or Psychic as being interesting fits.
